the more you see tape on this guy the more you think we just landed a 3rd round steal.

Now if 1 guy we pick tomorrow can contribute, that's just icing on the cake to what looks to be a great draft.

He finally noticed that several teams we play, The Raiders do it constantly, literally would find Sorensen or Niemann every single time they were on the field.

I think it's pretty much a guarantee that he's going to spend some time chasing QBs. I don't know if he can be a DE convert, but bring him on the blitz regularly? Oh hell yes.

Kiimo 04-29-2022 09:55 PM

Wisconsin would play him at basically nose tackle sometimes he's nuts. He's part of the reason people are a little concerned with Linderbaums play strength.

Big athletic guy that can over pursue sometimes, but was rad for years.

This is a Veatch grand slam

Chenal is really a prototypical middle but he's athletic enough to slide outside.

KCrockaholic 04-29-2022 09:59 PM

So his sacks all seemed to come from blitzing up the middle but if you watch him against the guards and centers he just knifes right through them and the QB has no option other than to shit himself and fold. Chenal is not a very nice man. Yes please use him off the edge occasionally....

I haven’t loved the draft but I understand what Veach is doing. I just preferred different players at the positions. However, I absolutely love this pick. Imo, he’s the best pick the Chiefs made this draft. Absolute beast and fills out the LB core.

Need to get pass rush in FA (Ingram) and this is going to be a very good defense.

I usually think of the MLB being the biggest LB in a 4-3 defense. Chenal outweighs Bolton by 30 pounds, so I figured that Chenal would be the MLB and Bolton would be the SLB. Interesting.

How ****ing brilliant and stealth would it be for Veach to have held out on plans for a 3-4 transition in 2023 so that he can accumulate talent in the draft without getting sniped.

In a 3-4 I guess we'd be look like this on the front 7:

Jones-Nnadi-Karlaftis

Gay-Bolton-Chenal-Clark

Honestly the Karlaftis pick would look better if we knew a 3-4 was coming. As a 4-3 edge, I'm still not happy with it.

oldman 04-29-2022 10:27 PM

I hadn't seen much of this guy, but he seems like a ****ing guided missile to the ball. I don't care if he isn't a great cover guy, I want a LB to hit someone and they don't want to get up. Oldman is getting kinda teary-eyed thinking about playing the hated Raiders.

honestly it could work well with what we have. Chris Jones was the best 3-4 RE early in his career, Nnadi at nose, Karlaftis looks like he'd be a better fit at 3-4 end. Frank Clark at ROLB and this beast Leo Chenal could work at LOLB with Bolton and Gay in middle? It could work

Dante84 04-29-2022 10:33 PM

Okay so i just sat and watched the full 9+ minute tape, and this guy is ****ing VIOLENT.

Like.

I can't remember a more violent player that we've had in the last 15 years - he's Dirty Dan but at the LB spot, with more anger issues.

And then having him + Karloftis, Jones, Bolton, Reid and Cook? Our defense is going to be very, very mean.

Karlaftis is a standup edge in a 3-4, he's 265, all of his scouting actually says he can play standing up.

Perfect.

I wasn't really looking at this kid; but reading up and looking at the highlights (yeah I know, they're highlights) and holy shit that RAS score, man.

Just from a few looks, I think SAM is perfect for this kid, and hell yeah, you can blitz him with the upgrades in the secondary. Go nuts.

I am resisting the temptation to hope that they profile him as someone they can mold into a DT (#58) long term. He certainly has the size, athleticism, and aggression.

kcbubb 04-30-2022 12:00 AM

His 3 cone and shuttle times are insane for that size. His only knock seems to be in coverage but maybe with that athletic ability, he can improve? High floor, high ceiling player. Great pick.

I wasn't after a LB at that pick, and to be honest would probably have preferred a coverage first LB. But, I've liked what Chenal can do and if there is definitely the potential there to do it all. Worst case is absolutely noone runs on us next year. Best case is his athleticism translates to a guy that can cover pretty well AND pass rush. Nice

First pick I've been underwhelmed by. But as a Badger fan, it's probably coming from the same place when Mizzou fans hate on their own

Good Morning SNR

He wasn't asked to cover a lot. He may be ok there. IMO this is a very solid pick. The kid does a lot well and is one of those "consistent motor" guys, however, he is also a very good athlete.

This guy will make Jack Lambert look like Mr. Rogers! He might even give Frank Clark a kick in the pants and light a fire under his ass!

I love the pick. Begs the question... Did we run a ton of nickel and dime because hitchens sucks? Does this mean we want to move to more traditional 4-3 alignments?

The interesting thing about our draft so far is that it seems we are very committed to stopping the run. The question will be how we hold up in an afc west that is better at passing than running.

I do wonder if this attitude change on the defense with the additions the last few years will motivate Clark and Jones to give a more consistent effort.

They’ll look old and washed if they’re getting shown up by a bunch of first and second year players. That aggressive attitude can be infectious.

We can hope at least.

What’s with all those posts in the draft thread about him just being sorta athletic? These are freakish numbers.

This is what I would’ve been had Coach put me in. Would’ve won state. My whole life could’ve (should’ve) been different.

NFL Draft Buzz Scouting Report:

92% Tackling
100% Pass Rush
100% Run Defense
64% Coverage

DRAFT PROFILE:

Chenal had an elite season in 2021 logged 558 snaps and recorded 87 total tackles, 4 sacks, 4 QB hits, 20 QB hurries, and a pair of forced fumbles all while missing two games of the season due to COVID-19. He was the defensive leader and was named to the 2021 AP All-America Second Team, in addition, was a finalist for the Butkus Award, an annual award honoring the nation’s best linebacker.

SCOUTING REPORT: STRENGTHS

Supreme athlete with explosive hitting power, excellent speed, a frame that looks like it is calved out of rock, and decent agility

A natural leader on the Wisconsin defense - almost a coach on the field with a super high football IQ

Huge hitter with immense strength in the running game - who easily blows through lead blockers and easily handles being double-teamed. The best run defender on the team

An immense pass rusher who led the Badgers in both sacks and tackles for loss in both 2020 and the 2021 regular season

Overpowering at the point of attack who is elite as a bull rusher and has a nice swim move in his arsenal

Versitile player who could play all linebacker positions at a high level
Rarely out of position - has a great knowledge of running game concepts and seems to always be in the right place at the right time

Very good quality tackler pretty much always wraps up and brings his man to the ground

Keeps feet moving after initial contact. Jumps inside as a counter to typical rush, but needs to show a larger variety of moves.

Made Bruce Feldman's annual freak's list -- and quoted as saying:
"The 6-2, 255-pound junior (31 tackles, six TFLs in 2020) is one of eight Badgers who bench 400 pounds or more. Chenal does 420 and cleans 385. The big man clocked a 4.00 time in the pro agility and has hit a top speed of 20.95 MPH on the GPS. He’s also broad jumped 10-1."

Was at elite at the Combine putting up a 4.53-second 40-yard dash, a 40.5-inch vertical, and a 10-foot-8 broad jump

Good all-around athlete with very good short-area quickness and fluidity. Very good playing strength and has worked hard in the weight room, adding bulk and filling out his frame

Works hard to get better and gives top effort on every play. A heads-up defender who shows impressive field awareness.

Super hard worker who plays 100% on every play

SCOUTING REPORT: WEAKNESSES

Doesn't have the length that you look for in a pass rusher - has only average arms

Doesn't really have any experience in coverage
Builds to top speed and must take the right line to beat backs to the edge.

Maybe a bit too jacked up and may gain agility and quickness by losing 10 pounds

Needs work on angles and· finding receivers in zone. Fails to break down at times, grabbing shoulder pads and lunging to allow ball-carriers to elude him
Attacks the line well but may need some work stacking and shedding blocks.

SCOUTING REPORT: SUMMARY

Leo Chenal has developed into an elite dominator for Wisconsin who is equally talented as a run defender and a power pass rusher. He has incredible potential as an outside linebacker at the next level who given he used in a system that suits his skills could quickly become a pro bowl level performer. He needs to be used correctly and if played as a middle or inside linebacker with coverage responsibilities could easily disappoint.

We are higher on him than most and rate him as a high second-round pick in the coming 2022 NFL Draft. We're convinced the rest of the scouting community will likely see what we see especially after he puts on a show at the combine.

Seems like an old-school linebacker. I like how physical he is. I’m just not sure I like of two linebackers that struggle in coverage (Bolton and Chenal) being on the field at the same time
