I was in downtown Amarillo last week and got to a red light beside an overpass. This homeless chick came around the corner walking the line of traffic carrying a cardboard sign that said something to the effect. " spare change or a little food, anything helps" .as I turned under the overpass there sat her boyfriend/husband/ brother. I dunno , but he had no legs and one arm.
Yeah, I feel so blessed as it is but if I were to win that sucker I'd go find that couple and show them my winning numbers give them 10 bucks and tell them to buy lotto. |
If you win and plan on giving some to family….how much would you give them? A million? Just pay off their bills?
Are you not giving them anything? |

Then I got to thinking one side of the family doesn't need anything. Because my brother-in-law is in very good shape. So that leaves my sister. We'll see.

Which I’m sure they would rack up more and then show up to get that paid off. |
I happened to be traveling before the last drawing...and the numerous billboards convinced me. I bought a ticket in every state I passed through (4). I did not even match a single digit.
I'll buy a ticket, but only a single. What would I buy? maybe some billboards to share my thoughts. |

Why not have a advisor do a financial life analysis to bring all family members up to a certain standard of living and wealth? |
I think I would build different kind of entertainment venues. It would be a way to share your wealth to many and still fine a way to make a return on it.

I'd probably buy 2-4 large houses (Mexicans). I may or may not keep them in my name. Depends on who they're for. I would set up an account (or multiple accounts) with access to around $5M total. Either several accounts or one big one that they can all access. They'd need to figure out the rest. What their living situations will be and how they want to divide the money. I'd explain that this is all they're getting. You're set now. It's up to you to use the money wisely. My biggest worry is that my bro in laws would use the money to live a reckless lifestyle. One that could lead to possibly death even. But im not their daddy. I can't tell them how to live. All i can do is provide an opportunity. |

It absolutely has to be individual accounts if you're going that route. |

Let them sort it out and whatever drama comes of it has nothing to do with me. Here's your family entitlement bonus, now piss off and leave me alone. And family dynamics have to be factored in. My family (more like my wife's family) are very close and share everything...to a fault to be honest. My bro in laws....none of them are responsible enough on their own with that kind of money. They're going to use the money to buy booze, drugs...guns and cars that they'll probably wreck. |
Honestly I'd take about 50% and put it in real estate. You'd double you money in 5-10 years. Single family homes.

I figured for close family....it would just all debt paid off with an agreement that any debt accrued after that....they would be responsible for. |

When I moved here in 1998 there was nothing available . I had to actually buy a house just to move and it's never changed. Now I have 17 houses. When I win this lotto I'll own the whole damn town and rents are going to skyrocket. It's all in my plan. I think small apartment buildings would be good with say 20-25 spaces but they can be a headache , especially if they are two story. When you get a broken water line on the 2nd floor it floods the first floor and it always happens in the middle of the night. I took a part time job for awhile last year doing maintenance for an apartment complex and it was as bad as having Hog Farm. People tearing shit up. |

Become a James Bond villain and build a lair with hot women.

Now up to 1.26 Billion

I always wanted to build an out-of-this world baseball/softball complex (think "big league dreams, but on steroids)........and have it be non-profit, allowing all walks of life the ability to play on awesome fields/facilities.

Half of it into savings immediately. Charitable donations would come out of this half. Start looking into lawyers, accountants, etc. Hard to know who to trust right off the bat is the problem, dont' want to get Nick Caged, hence the half into savings. Probably give money back to my old school district when I was a kid, former teachers that made a difference to me, coworkers, people who could use a hand.
I'm not working anymore, getting that 40 hours a week back to go do whatever the hell I want. Wife will do the same. Have to stay in the area for our kid to finish high school, we wouldn't want to pull them away from their friends and grandparents in the area. Force parents into retirement, buy my parents a new house wherever they want, probably new vehicles too. Take care of the in-laws as well. Start figuring out amounts to go to which Aunts and Uncles and cousins, definitely pay off my immediate Aunts and Uncles debts, those who were there all my life and helped raise me, took me to Chiefs games when I was young, camping, fishing, etc. Certain family is in the armed forces, make sure they're setup when they get out. Buy season tickets to the Chiefs so we stop using my in-laws tickets when it gets too cold is a big one right out of the gate. All the while my wife and I will be looking at land locally to build a new home in the KC Metro area, fix up our current home, pay it off and probably give it to one of my friends or family who really need it. After everything is as setup as it can be at home, I'd like to travel around the United States a bit, then overseas. I'm sure my wife would want a tropical vacation of some kind, which I would be all for. Just so many things to even think of, I'm sure in many ways it's a curse, but it's nice to dream about all the good it could do for you and those you care for, even those who don't get noticed in this world and need it the most. I've never been wealthy before so alot of new territory there. |

I'm good with a house somewhere around Topanga, CA. Maybe somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.5-3m in buy and renovation costs. 1 million a year for me and the wife to live. With the usual COLA's. Kids, parents, siblings, would be taken care of. I could see upwards of 70-80% of all winnings going into a trust for future generations beyond us.
|
If you take the cash option and pay roughly 40 percent on that amount in taxes, you'll take home a little more than $448,000,000. This will produce a sustainable income cash flow of almost $18 million per year. So you can spend about $49,000 a day, 365 days a year, without drawing down any of the winnings.
I would give about 1/3 of it to family, a scholarship fund, and some other charitable stuff. Subtracting that out, that would leave me with an income of about $1 million per month. And yes, I mean month. |
You quote this post and agree….. I’ll give you $100K if I win. You give me $100K if you win. Deal?

The odds of you having to share with another person that also picked the same numbers is really low. Mega Millions started in 2002. In 20 years of Mega Millions existence there has been 202 jackpots won and 227 winning tickets. Only 20 shared jackpots in 20 years. |
I didn't win. :(

One winner in Illinois.
Hopeful Frazod won it. I can see it now, the first two things on his list, a shit load of new guns and a kevlar fridge. |
If you won the match 5 (as many did last night), are you more excited about winning a million dollars or more pissed at missing the Mega ball and missing out on a billion?

When the jackpot gets so big, I really think they should have a method to split it among multiple winners to maximize happiness. But I understand why they don't. More people buy when the maximum prize is larger. |

Why not make it an incentive to the family member struggling to get themselves help. With the stipulations the money will come later after the self care and self improvements have been made? You don't have to be such a hard ass your whole life, Francis. People make mistakes. Some more than others, some make the same mistakes over and over. But that's okay. Life is journey, a marathon. There will be stumbles a long the way for all of us. Being humble and having a little humility is damn hard in the face of our natural prejudices. But I know damn well if you were a family member of mine. You wouldn't be left out in the proverbial cold over a few of life's issues that could face any one of us. |
I was really looking forward to how many cousins/family members I've never met and how many good, lifelong friends I've had since the first grade that I had completely forgotten about for decades that would have popped out of the woodwork had I won.

I didn't win the lottery but I made some good friends standing in line to buy a ticket!

For this particular Jackpot...If you played that kind of ticket....Lived in a state with no income tax(you just have to pay the federal rate of 37%)......and assumed there would be 1.66 winners....every $3 ticket you buy is worth $1.86. If you assume only one winning ticket will be sold, Every $3 ticket you buy is worth $3.11 |
Quote:
Right now the jackpot is $20 million with a cash out of $11.6. Every $3 ticket you buy is worth about nickle(assuming such a small jackpot will only have one winner). |
Pffft.... 20 mil..... hardly worth the effort now
