Appears so.

That might be one of the dumbest possessions I've ever seen ever.

Nantz should have retired last year… better game to go out on.

UCONN is such an incredible program. 5/5 in National title games, all since 1999.

Any other program better? Kentucky? Duke?

Sure, but you're not an upper tier college basketball program if you've missed the tournament in 6 of the last 10 seasons.

They’ve won 5 titles with 3 different coaches.

They are an upper tier college program even if their success is all recent.

Titles are all that matter.

I wasn’t complaining about that. They were constantly showing either the San Diego crowd or a bunch of old dudes for really long camera time during a possession. I can’t be the only one that found that super unusual.

They were a complete joke under Kevin Ollie for his entire tenure except for one supremely lucky year with a team that was nowhere near the best in the country. To be an upper tier program, there's a certain consistency level you have to reach that they clearly have not.

Maybe Hurley can bring them there.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here other than an anomaly occurred with Ollie winning as HC? They've still won with 2 other coaches in addition to Ollie.

They certainly were under Jim Calhoun for two decades. Hasn't been anywhere near the case since he left.

Not sure what's unclear about the fact that UConn took a significant step back as a program after Calhoun left. If Hurley can consistently build teams like he has this year, then we can have a conversation about them being upper tier again.

Would you say the royals are “upper tier” of the AL being the AL champ the 3rd most times since we came to the league?

I wouldn’t

No easier path to a championship I the history of this tourney than this. UConn was never challenged.

Their backups would of win by 29 with all the frauds in the FF.

Or calling Eli Manning upper tier in 2011 after he won his 2nd SB. There are levels of consistency you need to reach to get considered at Tom Brady and Peyton Manning's level. Same goes for UConn.

No. They have ONE title since 1999. UCONN has FIVE. Who has more than UCONN in that time frame? (I honestly don't know the answer)

Calhoun also left UConn on probation and banned from the tournament in Ollie's first year.

I get that UConn doesn't have much consistent success prior to or after Calhoun, but there's literally only 4 programs that have had 3 coaches win at least 1 title. UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, and UConn.

I also think Hurley will be fine at UConn. He's further away from the mess Calhoun/Ollie left him with and they're back in the Big East, which should stabilize them for recruiting purposes as opposed to being in the American.

Do you love being wrong? Because 1990 UNLV had the highest average seed by round on the way to their title (9). UConn's was 6.3.

Could be, very likely will be. But it's not easy to do what coaches like K, Self, Williams, Calipari and Wright have done over the past few decades. We will see if he can do it.

I'm not saying their route was the most challenging of all time, but they came from arguably the toughest region, took down the 8 seed that beat Kansas, and eviscerated Gonzaga in the Elite 8.

They also beat arguably the best team in the tournament in the regular season (Alabama).

Yes probably UConn would have won, but they never really had to play anybody good in this tournament that could even give them a challenge.

But congratulations to them. They took care of business and olayed was was in front of them.

Combine the probation problems along with being in a conference that geographically nuked their recruiting base probably wouldn't be a recipe for success.

I agree with that, but college basketball is so weird. Hurley's only 50 so I'd think he'd win at least 1 more, but the odds are so against anyone winning even once.

chiefzilla1501 04-04-2023 03:23 AM

Maybe I’m alone on this but that was still fun to watch. SDSU was brutal on offense but it was fun to watch a really good offense match up against a defense that’s pretty relentless. Hawkins seems like he could use another year but if he can consistently work off ball he could be one hell of a pick and pop guy in the pros.

scho63 04-04-2023 03:37 AM

SDSU shot about as good as me in the dark with both hands tied behind my back.

That was tough to watch for most of it. I thought they were going to take it in the second half when momentum really started to swing but they ran out of gas.

Happy for the Hurley's as a Jersey guy. I used to go watch Bobby Hurley play at the Jersey Shore Summer League.

Ah, the good 'ol days.

UConn is ****ing ridiculous and I guess some people are insecure with it or something? That it takes away from schools that are good every year if you have a school that just shows up to the party every once in a while and dominates?

I find it amusing. If it was a Big 12 rival, I'm sure it would be more obnoxious because their fans would come out of the woodwork every few years when they actually made the tournament, just to win another natty.. or would go .500 in conference play just to squeak in and win a natty. LMAO

There were threads on the Indians and Tigers and White Sux boards when we went back to back WS in 14-15, complaining we are a mutt who comes out of the woodwork and does a lot of damage, then sinks away. While their teams are nearly always better but suck in the playoffs

It’s not that unusual

Pablo 04-04-2023 08:25 AM

UConn is insane. No hate. Winning 5 titles in 24 years. Wow. And actually in the tournament era. Six games is a real gauntlet to get thru.

I know those 1940s titles when Whitey McWhite was the basketball star on campus and beat Milky Caucasian in a 2 game tourney mean alot to some schools. This is unprecedented from the huskies though.

Crying? No. Those are the breaks of this tournament and UConn beat the pants off of everyone they came up against. More than deserving as a champion.

But pointing out that UConn never had to play a difficult game because everyone good lost in front of them thus depriving neutral fans of a decent FF to watch at the end? Yes. It was objectively a bad ending to this one.

Duke won 5 in 24 years under Coach K, but nobody will ever match what John Wooden did at UCLA.

Chiefspants 04-04-2023 03:31 PM

The fact that UCONN has spread out 5 titles among 3 different coaches in 25 years might be the most impressive thing about their run here. They sort of remind me of the damn 2010's Giants. Missed the playoffs in 2011, 2013 and 2015, but a damn dynasty by default for nabbing 3 titles in five years.
