with only $95 Guaranteed he only needs 3 really good years.

In58men 03-09-2024 10:07 PM

#95 gets 95 million guaranteed, that’s not a coincidence lol.

Shaid 03-09-2024 10:09 PM

I love Chris Jones but 5 years is a long time for someone his age. Hoping that 5th year is truly a throwaway so we have flexibility if we need it. Glad the guaranteed money is in the first 3 years. This may be more of a 4 year 130 million deal.

DRM08 03-09-2024 10:10 PM

I’m shocked it happened. And now we cross our fingers. Hope like hell that he can stay healthy and perform at a strong level.

Dante84 03-09-2024 10:11 PM

Now let’s package Sneed for a trade up to get 5 years of a cost-controlled rookie LT.

Being able to play next to Chris will only help their development too.

You have to think about this as an investment not only in Chris himself, but in his ability to be a force multiplier to many pieces around him.

That's still over 31.5 per year at 95/3. So it's a big chunk of money. The structure of year 4/5 are what's important to determine if this is a good deal or not. We don't have info on the total $ yet. I'd feel pretty confident that there's no guaranteed money after year 3 so it's about how much dead cap do you have to eat after year 3 if he's declined.

And also, is there more non guaranteed money in the first 3 years? Because if so, those first 3 go from 31.5 per to ??.

This is a highly flexible deal. The Chiefs will be able to move money around as needed. It will be heavily front loaded however. With the cap exploding the Chiefs were able to make this happen.

So is it basically a three year deal? If so then that lines up with how long George, Trent and Taylor have left on their contracts. Also there's a chance Travis is retired by then too so things could look different by then tbh.

Ok so reading some follow up tweets.

It's 95/3. All money in the first 3 years is guaranteed. That suggests nothing in years 4 and 5 is guaranteed. There is no extra money in years 1-3. 95/3 bests ADs AAV. And Jones' total AAV isn't expected to be higher than bosa's. Which means years 4 and 5 should be right about the same 32 mil mark.

I feel better with all that info.

Very expensive 3 year deal at nearly $32M per year. Hopefully it doesn’t backfire on KC.

I’m sure it’s closer to a 3 year $95M deal with some funny money attached to voidable years.

I could see a $50M signing bonus spread across those 5 seasons and then salaries of $10M, $15M, and $20M for cap hits of:

Y1: $20M
Y2: $25M
Y3: $30M

We’d eat $12M in 27 and $12M in 28 cap space if we don’t pay him crazy money then (which we won’t). Seems like a good deal all the way around.

Stryker 03-09-2024 10:38 PM

The MINISTER of DEFENSE returns! God, I am so very happy right now! Hell yes! :thumb: 3 peat coming! :thumb:

Now focus on the offense in the free agency and draft! Brian Thomas or Xavier Worthy come on down!

ntexascardfan 03-09-2024 10:39 PM

So, if it's 5 years with 95 guaranteed and an AAV of 32 mil...you could have something that looks like this.

Year 1: 19 million signing + 8 salary
Year 2: 19 million signing + 9 salary
Year 3: 19 million signing + 10 salary
Year 4: 19 million signing + 16 salary
Year 5: 19 million signing +22 salary

Depending on how the cap increases and the market moves for DT, he could still be worth it in year four, but you never realize the last year of the deal.

The fifth year to me is going to be a mechanism just to keep the cap hit this year low so they can add whatever they want to go for the three-peat. (Based on Sweeney’s post that he has heard that’s their plan)

For those playing at home, that would look more like this:

year 1: 12M SB - 11M sal - 23M cap hit
year 2: 12M SB - 12M sal - 24M cap hit
year 3: 12M SB - 12M sal - 24M cap hit
year 4: 12M SB - one billion dollars (void) - 24M dead
year 5: 12M SB - taylor swift (void) - 12M dead

That's $60M signing bonus with $35M in guaranteed salary over the first 3 years, or 95M total paid with no cap hit over $24M in any year...

Glad just got done right away instead of dragging out like last year. If it’s a choice between Jones and Sneed, I agree with most here that Jones is the answer. But it would be so great if we could still keep Sneed. If not, let’s hope we get good draft compensation And a free agent corner who comes cheap to earn a ring.

Now let’s see in free agency and the draft what we can do to add a third credible receiver.

After Reggie White left Philly he appeared in 14 playoff games and had 70+ sacks.

I got a feeling Jones is going to age even better. He's more athletic than White and in better shape.

How important is it for the Chiefs to keep Chris Jones? Last season, they allowed 4.3 yards per play when he was on the field (would rank first in the NFL), but that increased to 5.5 yards per play when he was off it (23rd)

ON FIELD OFF FIELD
Defensive plays 704 341
Yds per play 4.3* 5.5
Pressure pct 37%* 31%
Sack pct 11%* 4%

Dont mortgage the chance to get 6 or 7 total by going all in for the three peat.

Veach has played this so smartly the last few years. Don't get shortsighted now.

Man that is...a lot of money. I mean to be expected but makes you wonder what he would've got on the open market.

It’s not a 1 year thing. Go all in for the next 4 years. That is probably the end of the road for Kelce and Coach Reid (and Jones). If you could win 2 more rings in the next 4 years, that would be awesome…especially in the context that you already have 3 rings in the last 5 years.
