That's actually a huge upgrade.

He got a shot in 2022 with Washington but he was injured after 6 games and then couldn’t get his job back after he was healthy. Washington paid a hefty price to get him from the Colts.

He lost his job to Taylor Heinicke after breaking a finger in a win over the Bears at Soldier Field in mid-October. The Commanders, who were 2-4 under Wentz, went 4-1 under Heinicke, who remained the starter after Wentz was healthy.

BossChief 04-01-2024 10:25 PM

As long as they didn’t give him much, it’s a good signing.

rico 04-01-2024 11:42 PM

I love it… this dude was legit early in his career… injuries derailed him a bit, I believe…. But hell yeah, love this move.

Thank God. The idea of Gabbert stepping onto the field in a meaningful game terrified me.

It looks like the Rams only paid him the minimum, so probably he turned us down thinking he'd get a better offer, we signed Gabbert instead, and the better offer never came.

KC_Connection 04-02-2024 01:03 AM

Carson Wentz led the NFL in QBR in 2017. He's 20th among active NFL QBs in passer rating. He had a 27 TD to 7 INT ratio in his last full season as a starter in 2021.

Is he the best backup QB this franchise has had since Rich Gannon?

Rasputin 04-02-2024 01:43 AM

our backup is better than 1/3 of starting quarterbacks in the league.

Yes.

And this type of move is one we should have been looking to make the last 5 years. We should always be looking for a b/u QB that's capable of winning 50% of the games they start.

That's the b/u QB's job -- just keep things floating until the boss gets back. You don't have to win anything but just don't lose it.

That's not correct. Frank Reich wanted to keep Wentz after the season. It was owner Jim Irsay who wanted to get rid of him (exact reasons were not given, it was speculated that Irsay was pissed because Wentz didn't want to get vaccinated in the Covid19 season). Instead, he brought in Matt Ryan, with whom the Colts had a significantly worse season than the year before with Wentz.

That's exactly what happened. Wentz rubbed Irsay the wrong way. Country boy that bow hunts and didn't take the vaccine. Which is part of the problem with Wentz. Has Josh Allen-like arm talent but he's disintrested in football. He'd rather be in a tree stand.

0dd T0dd.

But also Nick Foles for that one year.

Dunerdr 04-02-2024 06:00 AM

Carson Wentz grovels at the feet of the man who rebuilt the man who ruined his career. Andy takes pity.

InChiefsHeaven 04-02-2024 06:07 AM

I dunno, I remember early on in his career he was pretty good. Just often injured. I saw him at Arrowhead get beat by the Chiefs, but I remember thinking that dude is big and has a cannon. That was the game where Kelce Superman dove from the 5 yard line and landed on the Eagles player which carried him into the endzone. Epic.

This ain't the worst backup QB signing...

my point is that he's been through enough in his career that he will probably eat humble pie. First it was accepting that he will never fight for a starting job even for a bad team. Last year it was accepting he wasn't worth what he thought. He's been brought down many pegs and if that straightens out his attitude we may end up with a real good one.

Dude what are you on? In what world could this guy affect the locker room AT ALL with Mahomes and Kelce breathing air?

He's joining a dynasty team coming off back to back superbowls.

This dude has nothing to say, except thanks for the free game checks. Wentz will be quiet as a church mouse. He's playing behind the best qb that ever lived.

He can say nothing, he can question nothing. He will keep his head down, work, and do as he's told, and he will get himself another pine riding Superbowl ring.

As has been beaten with a dead horse, way better player than Gabbert. The kind of guy who can keep you afloat for some games, if necessary.

I couldn't do any more Gabbert. Good move.

O.city 04-02-2024 08:50 AM

Yeah, nice move.

Say Pat goes down for a game or two, Wentz can come in and actually play well.

Hell...it's to bad it's just a 1 year deal or we could parlay that into a trade if it came to fruition.

I had that thought too but then quickly shifted to just hoping like hell we never have to worry about rehabbing Carson Wentz' value on the field.

If he has to play and plays well, that'll be good enough for me.

Andy loves to rehabilitate like he did with Michael VicK. I don't know what happened to Carson Wentz, but it sure seemed like he did have the "it factor"in the very beginning. Maybe that injury just screwed with his head. I don't know but I do trust Andy Reid and rehabilitating quarterbacks and has some of you have said he's a great back up quarterback if Andy can get him halfway rehabilitated.

Bwana 04-02-2024 08:14 PM

Love it, Buh-bye Gabbert.

jettio 04-02-2024 10:47 PM

Wentz seemed locked in at NDSU and in the draft process and in Philly until his first injury.

He did not seem bad until Jadeveon Clowney did that malicious intending to cause injury bullshit to get him our of the playoff game versus Seahawks.

Seemed to me, that Eagles were winning that game and could be competitive in the divisional if Clowney had not pulled that shit.

Wentz seemed lost after that.

FloridaMan88 04-02-2024 11:19 PM

Wentz is going to bring back the QB sneak play for the Chiefs.

Wisconsin_Chief 04-03-2024 05:37 AM

This is such a beyond great signing. God forbid Mahomes goes down, but Reid could legitimately lead this team to the playoffs with Wentz playing most of the season, and that’s the first time we’ve been able to say that about our backup.

Hoopsdoc 04-03-2024 07:00 AM

Mizzou fans remember that Ndamukong Suh messed up Gabbert's ankle in his first season as a starter and that Pinkel let him keep the job even though he was playing at 50%.

Gabbert's performance against Iowa in the bowl game was shockingly good and made him a 1st round pick, but he even ****ed that game up with a terrible interception late in the game.

I am proud that he kept at it and stayed in the NFL a long time, but Gabbert did not really play great at Mizzou.

Chiefs are not going to take Mahomes off the field for goal line. Chiefs **** up on telegraphed run plays into the pile early in the season when they want to keep some concepts off film, but Chiefs convert more than most when they run a creative play.

Mahomes is too competitive to go along with being taken out of play so that Wentz could run a QB sneak and Andy Reid understands Mahomes leadership and personality.

He got benched for Taylor Heinicke for most of the year. When they gave him one last start (with the playoffs on the line thanks to Taylor Heinicke) his stat-line was 12-16 for 123 yards. Matt Castle had never looked as bad as what I witnessed from Carson Wentz. And thats with Gibson, Mclaren, a stud rookie wide-receiver, a serviceable tight-end and a good running back. Chiefs got scammed. He'll be more focused on turkey hunting intel than Andy Reids work-of-art playbooks.

The Chiefs already have play calls in short yardage/goal line when Kelce or McKinnon line-up at QB and Mahomes lines-up at WR as a decoy.

Put Wentz in the line-up for these type of plays and you have someone who can QB sneak it or throw it.

Pretty sure Mahomes would be okay with that, since the Chiefs have already been running these type of plays.

Gabbert absolutely sucked though. If you want a good backup (and the Chiefs should have one, they can't afford to completely lose their season because of a Mahomes injury), you have to pay to get it in this league.

Wisconsin_Chief 04-06-2024 12:30 PM
