Best of luck man. I just started a new job recently, and had been at my prior job over 20 years.

It was a really surreal feeling as I went through the job search, but it ended up being quite rewarding and I am loving my new job.

RedRaider56 05-24-2024 05:14 AM

Sorry to hear. Best of luck on your search for the next great employment adventure!

Eureka 05-24-2024 08:00 AM

This might be a movie you can relate too. Just watched it the other night.

That sucks, DaFace but at least you got a really nice severance. Good luck in your future endeavors. I'm sure you will land on your feet just fine.

Eureka 05-24-2024 08:04 AM

The company I work for has laid off a big percentage of employees recently. Seems weird watching people you've known for years walk out the door. They get a severance package as well but I know it's still a shock for them.

Good news is there's parking at work now.

digger 05-24-2024 08:21 AM

Best of luck on your search. I'm hoping I don't have to start searching soon...

Unless you started posting here in HS, I'm gonna guess early 40's

This will end up being a favor. Just be sure to balance taking advantage of the essentially paid, extended, vacation with seeking out the next gig. Give yourself multiple options.

Perhaps the career and space enthusiast gods are nudging you to attend a Starship launch during your downtime? :hmmm:

What really sucks when they have layoffs? When you are a manager who has to lay off 10 good people, when you know 2 useless people with offices are still employed because of the work they did 10 years ago...

Rain Man 05-24-2024 09:53 AM

You should also consider doing unpaid volunteer work.

For my company.

Just think of it this way, they are paying you to golfing, fishing, anything you want for a month. Just chill & relax! Refocus! A paid vacation!

Then go job hunting the 2nd month. FTR, Sorry to hear this but I believe and trust that you will land a new job that's perfect for you.

It will be gruelingly long hours with no pay, but you'll feel better about yourself at the end of the day. That's all that matters.

Aren't you going to be retiring soon? You'll get all the vacation time you want! :)

That's exactly right. This is going to springboard your next adventure and you have plenty of time to process things. Congrats are definitely in order here.

I'm still in profit sharing for one more quarter.

You can be the difference between me getting an oceanfront hotel room or a city view hotel room.

ptlyon 05-24-2024 12:57 PM

You going to stay in the room the entire time?

Couch-Potato 05-24-2024 01:10 PM

Sorry to hear it, Tech is the right space though!

You'll find another one soon! I prefer working a the smaller orgs and helping them build something, the payoff can be better than big orgs.

Good luck brotha!

good luck on your job search!

Despite this experience, I'm definitely going to look at early- to mid-stage startups. My role (consumer insights, to oversimplify) probably won't exist in the earlier side, but being a one-man research shop kind of sounds fun. We'll see what I find.

Consumer insights meaning trending or consumer spending/buying habits?

DaFace....watch out for these kind of offers. I have an unpaid "volunteer " positions since I retired...

I now work for the Ms. Mosbonian Fool and Die Company. Every morning my boss comes to me and says "here's your to do list to complete....act like a fool and you die."

😁

lewdog 05-24-2024 08:20 PM

Get the **** in the VPN thread and help me. You’ve got time!

BigOlChiefsfan 05-24-2024 08:35 PM

Hang tough. Set up a day planner, pick stuff that needs doing - and check it every few hours to update/go start the next task. I'd sleep an extra hour or so but get up/get busy about the same time you'd be showing up at work. Consider your resume' updates, your daily applications to be your current job. Think pretty hard what you want to do - pick a winner and get after it. Make it a point to not fall into the 'get stoned or drunk and waste time' trap. I'd also devote half an hour a day or every other day into walking/kettlebell or dumb bell workout, more if you're alreay used to it.

Bwana 05-25-2024 08:02 AM

You got this! Take the time off to relax and recharge.

Consulting can be pretty lucrative work, not only in the private sector, but also with government contracts.

I thought that outside consulting was really only profitable in the IT arena....boy was I an idiot.

I have been retired since April 1st...took on 2 consulting opportunities that took 8 work days total and made more for those 2 projects than I made working the last 2 months of my job that I retired from.
