Plus, starting on December 15 we have three games in a 10 day stretch, including four days between the Texans at home and the Steelers on the road.

Yeah, the league's definitely in our corner this year. :whackit:

But it’s good it looks like he’ll be back in December.

It is. Sportsscience or NextGen Stats did a piece on the physics of kicking years ago, so I don't remember the exact amount of force they cited, but the energy translated through the plant leg to the ground is several hundred pounds (some multiple of body weight) due to the steep downward angle taken. Also, a significant part of the energy is dissipated as torque during the follow-through.

I wondered why he was dropping like that last season, but didn't think it was due to pain from a torn meniscus.

louie aguiar 11-14-2024 04:36 PM

Jets tried to keep Shrader- offered him a spot on the roster- opted to go to KC instead.

That was a long time ago. He's now 25 and has never missed an NFL kick. If the trend continues he'll be headed to Canton one day.

But at least it's only the next 3-4 weeks and not the playoffs.

No telling how long it takes him to get his confidence/firm back after being off , that ankle injury 2 years took him a while to get back to himself , we are well aware how losing because of a kicker feels like.

Do we really want to tempt the gods of football by bringing in 'because Mizzou' as well?

Yup.

Red Zone decisions might get a little more interesting now as well. As in, if we know we may need a longer FG later, with Butker you take the automatic 3 here and assume the likely automatic 3 later.

With this dude it may change the calculus a little and make the Chiefs more apt to go for 7 on 4 downs when they get inside the 20, unlike the situation with Denver last week where we settled for the 3 FG's in the red zone.

I wouldn't have mentioned his name if he sucked. The guy did a great job.

Megatron96 11-14-2024 04:58 PM

Probably should see less of the gadgety stuff and the vanilla plays. Andy might have to break out the platinum (plutonium?)-grade RZ plays for the next month. And, hopefully, less trying to force plays to Justyn Ross/JWat/whoever, more to Travis and Nuk. In fact, I 100% expect DHop to be featured a ton more in the RZ now.

ChiliConCarnage 11-14-2024 04:59 PM

He did make some HUGE kicks for Mizzou, but he was just a 79% FG kicker his last 2 years there, so not exactly automatic.

Not gonne lie, part of me wanted this because the Bills worked out Mevis earlier this year when Bass was struggling, but passed on signing him. Imagine if the Chiefs signed him, brought him in and he beat them on a GW FG. Holy Shit! The meltdown in Buffalo would be epic! ROFL

Between 'punt god' and the 'thicker kicker', you would be able to hear the knashing of teeth all the way from Buffalo . . . . .

gordonelloyd 11-14-2024 05:05 PM

Now we will find out how valuable Butker is. I have always thought he has been underappreciated and after Mahomes and Jones is our most valuable player.

If Mahomes can start hitting worthy when he is wide-open, which is often at least several times a game it won’t be so important

Justin Reid, iirc

thabear04 11-14-2024 05:37 PM

To fill the vacancy, the Chiefs are signing Spencer Shrader off the Jets practice squad to their 53-man roster.

In a pinch, the Chiefs have used safety Justin Reid as an emergency kicker. The length of Butker's injury appears to have forced the team to bring in a specialist.

Psychologically, I’d imagine the recovery of a ligament tear in your plant leg would be worse than your kicking leg.

But I’m not gonna worry about this. Time to get super aggressive over this next month and score TDs.

On the other hand it couldn't have happened at a better time. We've got games coming up where we can win without him. Clinch homefield so we don't need to rush him back.
