Bob Feller. **** that bitter old corpse.
Chris Evans was a pretty big dick. Rob Schneider is probably the biggest jerk I've met who is "famous" - or at least, WAS "famous." |

What was the point here? That you just met him? |
Carson Palmer.
Was at the Speedway one Sat in '03. He sat behind Kitna that year (rookie). He and i were the only 2 in the store at the time and i didn't do anything to go out of my way to be near him, didn't ask him for an autograph or a pic. Just said out loud, "good to have you on the team and look forward to watching you next year". Dude couldn't even be bothered to turn his head and acknowledge that i was there. I just went "ooookay" and walked up to pay for my stuff. |
George Brett flat out ignored me when I tried to get his autograph when i was a kid.
|
I've interacted with a shit ton of celebrities, mostly through customer service situations so I feel like I've gotten a pretty good idea of what to think of them. Almost all are at least polite and gracious. Tim Allen was surly, but as a regular at the restaurant where I worked, he warmed up to me. (His wife/manager was one of the friendliest people I ever waited on.)
One unsurprising dick head is Floyd Mayweather. He regularly stayed at a hotel in Hollywood where I was a concierge. We always knew if he was coming it was going to be a nightmare. Entitled, abusive, rude, and cheap. I don't even mean not tipping cheap. I mean demanding free shit and free stays over total bullshit. His entourage more than once got in physical alterations with security. **** that fight ducking loser. Also, Leslie Mann randomly. Maybe she was just having a bad week, but one Oscars week she and her husband Judd Apatow stayed at the hotel and she was ****ing awful. Complained about everything and was verbally abusive. Oh, and Denzel ate at the restaurant where I worked and was an out and out creep towards the waitress. Really surprised he hasn't been MeTooed based on his behavior. Again, maybe it was an isolated incident or something, but he was really gross. |
For the most part, celebrities are excited to meet me and very polite. Most don't even ask for an autograph.
|
Travis Tritt told me to **** off when I asked him to sign my 2009 mock draft
|
Met Jamaal Charles at J Alexanders a few hours after he played a great game at Arrowhead. Couldn't have been friendlier and very down to earth.
Carl Peterson = complete a-hole. |

Sat next to the astronaut, now senator, Mark Kelly on a flight to Phoenix one day. He was a rude SOB. You could tell he didn't want to interact with anyone at all.
Wife and I have met Rob Lowe and Ralph Macchio. They were both super nice. |
Many years ago my family with the in-laws were on vacation down in Florida to do the Disney thing and were spending some time in the hotel pool. It was just us and another couple and the husband looked very familiar but I couldn't place him. He was very nice and we chatted for about 15 minutes or so about where we were from, what we did etc. He said he was a musician on TV..it was Paul Schafer (sp?) from the David Letterman show. Really, really nice guy and I felt a fool for not recognizing him at first.
|
Also tried to get Kevin Appier's autograph at a pre-game signing at the K when I was a kid. I was about 10-15 people away and he was called away to go warm up. He announced that he felt terrible that there was still a line and would continue to sign for people who wanted autographs after the game in the parking lot.
Not really meeting him per se, but it was a cool gesture. |

I served an a-list big wig movie star and his (at the time) famous wife at a mexican restaurant when I was a kid and broseph acted like he wanted to fight. I didn't even acknowldge the fact that he was who he was. I tried playing it off because I'm a schmuck midwesterner. Acted like a princess. Couldn't begin to imagine what it must be like to have to deal with these ego's on a regular basis.

Met Darius Rucker (Hootie days) - after a small venue concert in Oregon. We were at a local bar that was packed. He came in and asked if he could sit at our table - no blowfish were with him - sat with us for a couple hours and had drinks - nicest guy ever.
Early 90's Chevy Chase at a bar in Maui - supreme dickhead to everyone. Treated the staff like absolute crap. Was in an elevator with Roy Jones Jr in New York - really good guy. |

Jim Belushi. He was a client of the lawfirm I worked at and was in the office for a couple of meetings. He was being sued by somebody, and clearly wasn't happy about it. He was a raging dick to everybody except the senior partner he was buddies with. This included my one of my bosses, who basically looked like Kat Dennings, only prettier. I figured if he was shitty to her, he'd definitely be shitty to a fat guy with Cardinals stuff on his desk, so even though I was in close proximity to him a few times, I never engaged him or even made eye contact. It's almost surreal to see somebody who you only know as a jovial goof on TV act like a raging, miserable prick.
The coolest celebrity encounter I had was with Vincent Price. He was somehow involved with the college in my hometown, and every few years he'd visit and put on a little seminar at the main auditorium. I went to one in the fall of '83, right after Thriller came out. When it started, they played the music to Thriller, and Price did his rap, along with the ending laugh, in person. I later learned that he only did that in front of a live audience twice; once on the Tonight Show, and that night. It's pretty awesome that I got to see it. After his presentation, he went to the back exit and greeted every one of the hundreds of people who attended on their way out. I shook his hand and spoke to him briefly. He was charming, friendly and awesome, and not at all like the villains he always portrayed. |
Honestly, I'm amazed that so many of you recognize people. I wouldn't recognize half the people on this list, or at least I wouldn't recognize them with enough confidence to be sure it's them.
I wonder how famous you have to be before being recognized ceases to be a cool thing for you and starts being an annoyance. If 50 percent of people on the street recognize you, I'm sure it's an annoyance. Maybe 10 percent is still above the threshold. Is 5 percent? Imagine that you're walking down the street and 1 in 20 people recognizes you as a "celebrity". Would that get old after a while? Granted, everyone who recognizes you won't ask for a photo or autograph, or even say hi. So let's assume that 25 percent will approach you, and 75 percent will elbow the person next to them and smile and nod in your direction. If we go with that assumption, and assume that 4 percent of people recognize you (just to keep the math easy), then 1 person out of every 100 that you encounter will say hello or ask you for something, and 3 others will giggle and point. Actually, I could see that being annoying. You'll have one person in every restaurant coming up to you. So maybe an ideal level of fame is really low, where maybe 1 in 100 people recognize you. That means that you can probably walk down the street unbothered, and maybe an occasional passerby will see you. Most restaurant visits will be anonymous, and you'll probably get three or four people approaching you at the mall. That's enough to be flattering, but probably not enough to be annoying. What do you think? |
My sister met Tony G at a salsa club in the early 00's. She's not a sports fan. She said he was put off & shocked that she didn't know who he was & was confused re: his arrogance until some people she was with explained who he is to her. She (lol) was not impressed.

Folks here have met some interesting people.
I really don't have much in my column. Bill Clinton was cool when we met him out politicking for Hillary Sly Stalone was nice when I saw him in New York. That's all I got. |
John Elway. Probably did not help I had Chiefs hat on. Dude is a dick regardless
Reggie Jackson at a car auction. Just a prick. |
Justin Jefferson was cool did two quick videos for my grandson in Phoenix when he was here for SB
Played golf with Bernie Kosar, Earl Morral and cole aldridge in different years all three pretty cool-- Jerk was Jim kelly who looked at me like I was a pariah when I asked for his augograph Daughter runs into Jennifer anniston on occasion supposed shes really sweet |

I've met quite a few celebrities over the years. Jack Hanna was very friendly and down to earth. Same for Baker Mayfield who looks bigger in real life than on the football field. Dinesh D'Souza was well mannered and polite.
The biggest douche really was the dog whisperer Cesar Milan. Guy thought he was Jesus or something. |

I've had many celebrity interactions mostly positive. It's usually the B list people that think they're hot shit that I laugh at. Definitely one of the coolest I had was James Gandolfini. During the height of the Sopranos I ran into him at an Apple Store, he was wearing a Hawaiian shirt, shorts, sandals, long scruffy beard basically the exact opposite of Tony Soprano. Couldn't have been nicer

My dad was a contractor doing work at a concert venue.
Bumped into Stevie Nicks and said she was a raging bitch. |
Oh yeah one time I bumped into Linda Carter - Wonder Woman at the mall in MD suburbs in the video game store. You might remember that her husband was the founder of ZeniMax, the owner of Bethesda Softworks, publisher of Fallout among others (later acquired by Microsoft).
She was a little bit bitchy and diva-esque in the line. Fairly harmless but acting a bit entitled to the unwashed masses. |
Dave Winfield. Turned me down for an autograph when I was a kid. He was a douche canoe.

I have a friend who was in a band with Jake Busey (who is a surprisingly good drummer) and went to see their show and blah blah blah I ended up after the show getting wasted with his dad Gary. He was not mentally there. His accident ****ed his brain and he's all ID all the time. It was a blast though |

I may get excommunicated for this one but George Bret.
When I was a little tyke he came to my home town for an autograph signing and was a total prick to fans, loudly bitched about even being there the entire time. |
I met Luigi Mangione at a backyard BBQ in Manhattan KS (1,314.5 miles away from Manhattan NY) on 12/4. He helped man the smoker from 6AM to 6PM while wearing a "I Love High Deductible Plans" ugly Christmas sweater. He insisted on setting up all the tables and chairs despite his right index finger being immobilized in a cast which rendered it useless. I offered him a cup of coffee several times but he prefers Earl Grey tea as coffee upsets his tummy
Anyway, nice enough chap and the tenderest brisket I've had. Hope he shares his technique with the rest of us |
The Sherminator (Chris Owen - had to look it up) from American Pie waited on my wife and me at a sushi restaurant in Santa Monica a few years ago. I asked him if we was still acting and he said, "When they let me." I guess he exhausted his 15 minutes of fame.
Edit - I looked at his IMDB and he's been in some things lately, including a prominent role in something called Money Game this year. Guess his 15 minutes aren't up yet. |
I bought a shot for Jon Gries at a bar and was like I have to do a shot with you and he had a funny look on his face and he's like why so you can say you had a shot with Uncle Rico? And I said, nope, so I can say I had a shot with Lazlo Hollyfeld.
His attitude completely changed and he screamed YES! and we downed the shots. True story |
Met Marcell Marso once got stuck in an elevator for a hour with him and tried to make small talk, bastard never said a single word to me.

He was working on something in a pretty wide hallway. Ample room to walk around but he had his tools and whatever else set up. She was walking down that same hall. She yelled at him to get the **** out of the way. Even though there was plenty of room and he was there first. Clearly working on something. |

Nicks reminds me of a batshit crazy girl that I liked in high school, except she grew out of it, and Nicks never has. I'm also fairly surprised that the members of Fleetwood Mac made it to old age without murdering each other.
Videos of them performing Go Your Own Way are hilarious. She basically glares daggers at Buckingham during the entire song. LMAO |

Only ratcheted up my respect for Tiger. Surprises me that Daly was an ass - seems totally opposite from afar. |
I used to work at the Grand Hyatt and the Marriott on Kauai during the summers in high school, which meant I crossed paths with a lot of famous people. Here are some memorable encounters:
•Brad Pitt: Super nice. •Scott Stapp: Really cool, but surprisingly tiny. •James Hetfield: Extremely nice. •Jason Taylor: Really cool. •Michelle Pfeiffer: Naturally stunning and very quiet. •Ricky Williams: Total stoner and very shy. Dave Chappelle I once ran into Dave Chappelle at 6 a.m. while walking around San Francisco’s financial district. We were the only two people on the street. He noticed me noticing him, but my brain didn’t process who he was immediately. He just gave me a dap and kept moving. Johnny Damon I met Johnny Damon at a random bar in the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas (now the Virgin Hotel). He wanted our VIP table, so he offered to buy us a bottle if we moved. He was polite, so we agreed. His girlfriend (or wife) at the time was an absolute knockout. At one point, another girl tried to talk to Johnny, and his girlfriend wasn’t having it. It escalated into a full-on fight—two tiny, gorgeous women in mini dresses rolling around on the floor legitimately tearing each other’s hair out. There were clumps of hair all over the floor. It was surreal. The Situation He came into a restaurant managed by a girl I was dating at the time. Total douchebag. I watched how he treated her staff horribly, ran up an $800 sushi bill, and walked out without paying. Shawne Merriman I ran into him in an elevator at a pool party at the Hard Rock in San Diego. My first thought wasn’t “person” but “refrigerator.” The guy was massive. He gave me the bro nod but came off as arrogant, brushing off some Chargers fans who were asking for his autograph. Elvin Hayes of the Washington Bullets when I was 14 years old. I waited 45 minutes after the Nets-Bullets game at Brenden Burne Arena in NJ in the stands with my Dad, who was pissed already. Elvin walked out in a full length black leather trench coat looking like Shaft, I politely asked for an autograph and he said on the way back. I waited another 10 minutes and as he came back to go down the tunnel he said he was too busy. Not a single sole left in arena and I was all alone with my Dad. Crushed me and my Dad tore into me all the way home in the car for idolizing athletes.
The only other asshole was Paul Azinger. The story is in the "Celebrities You Met on Life" thread I created years ago. A real asshole. All other celebrities met have been great. Tom Cruise was a little weird. |

I have bumped into a lot of "celebrities" doing SF/F conventions. 99% of them have been cool and the others were just brusque - not obnoxious, but usually in a hurry or their minders have been the obnoxious ones. Probably worst encounter was with George Takai, but again, it was his handler who was the unpleasant one.
One of my best encounters was with Ron Glass. I was at a show and spotted him going toward a panel, surrounded by Firefly fans. As we passed, I slowed down just a moment and asked, "So, how are the royalties on 'Blood on the Badge' these days?" (A Barney Miller reference) and just kept on walking. All of a sudden I heard a "Hey, stop." I turned around and he was walking back toward me. "Walk with me, if you don't mind." So I fell in beside him and he told me a bunch of Barney Miller stories as we went to the panel and hung out until it was time for him to go on stage. He told me he was SO happy not to have to talk about Firefly for a bit, even though he knew that was why cons were inviting him. Let me just say, there were a lot of Browncoats unhappy with me monopolizing their idol's time. Some fandoms are just downright scary. |

The only upside to that story was my son met Buck O'Neil who spent 30 minutes talking to my son and my wife after seeing Damon pull his stunt. He even signed the foul ball baseball my son had gotten off Damon's bat that night. |
Here's a cool one that involves one of my best friends and his son. The kid, who is IIRC in eighth grade, has the makings of a really good hockey player. My buddy to him to a Wayne Gretzky hockey camp, and Gretzky himself took a special interest in him - far more than the other kids there. Said the kid reminded him of himself at that age, which seems like a pretty big deal. As a result, my buddy spent quite of bit of time chatting with Wayne. He said he was awesome, although he had a really hard time getting around after all the abuse his body took during his playing days.
