Matty Lane keeps pushing the narrative that cook shouldn’t start. He lost some of his speed and range after the injury but he may well still be working through that. He could be upgraded but likely not for cheaper. He’s a good player and the kind of player that is the foundation on championship teams.

My only concern is general corner volatility.

Fulton, like most corners, has been up and down most of his career. He had what looked like a breakout that 2nd year in TN (like many others, I liked him in the draft. I actually liked him a year earlier when he surprised me by going back to college).

The truly consistent corners tend to show steady ascension whereas Fulton's career has been a little more common - some good years, some not so good, strong contract year.

Might be the start of a long period of consistency but for many it's just the continuation of the same trend a lot of CBs show of season over season inconsistency.

Fine gamble but not what I'd call a sure thing.

Maybe he's just a guy that responds well to good coaching. He had that in his best year in TN and again in SD. He'll get that here as well.

Reason for optimism but I wouldn't bet the mortgage either.

Side note - Watson is also extension eligible. This would seem to set the floor for him, no?

I think this is a fair assessment. I also feel like I'm probably more risk tolerant this year. Just feels like we need to take a few chances. I'll roll the dice with Fulton before resigning a guy like Omenihu at DE.

With the price of CBs maybe it’s smart to take on in the first round.

If you did it based on talent to pick+money if you picked 27-32 every year you'd take a WR 75% of the time.

Sometimes, sure. He's a good coverage safety. I don't know if all the success has tainted people's perceptions of our players or if they just don't pay attention to the rest of the league.

That is more in line with what I remember.

He dropped off hard last season in coverage. Statistically, he went from a career low 60's completion percentage against to 77.4% and gave up 502 yards. Easily career worsts for him.

I think name recognition factors hard sometimes, and we tend to look past the reality. Look at the AP-2 guys from last year at Safety. Purely name, not performance.

Conner at FS and Hicks at SS feels like the future. I think a big part of this signing is it allows McDuffie and Conner to play where they are most comfortable. It was basically like improving three positions for the price of one.

I think we trade up and snag Simmons if he falls into the 20's. That way we have Jaylon Moore for a year or two and then Simmons healing and developing behind him. Best case, Moore balls out and we sign him to a long term deal and slot in Simmons at RT to replace Juwaan Taylor. Worst case, Moore leaves in FA and we have Simmons at LT.

It's a little disappointing because I like Reid and in a vacuum he's probably a better player, but I agree, the secondary as a whole is better with Fulton.

You're also making two other spots better by allowing McDuffie and Conner to play their ideal roles.

Every single year, we go into the season wondering if the other shoe will finally drop, and we'll finally have the down year we are more than overdue for. It would be perfectly understandable, and nobody could even flinch if it happened. Yet, here they are, raising their game yet again and outmaneuvering the league as usual.

It's just mind boggling.

Big reason why they continue to do this year after year is they don’t over-leverage themselves

Especially when you consider they always draft 31/32, they are absolutely the best in the league at managing the roster to have a great chance to win this year + the two to follow. It’s never all in for the given year and that’s why each offseason they’re in a position to keep it rolling.
