or, it's simply false.

I'm taking the third choice. With Peter King actively denying and ESPN refusing to confirm it, I think it's BS.

The $36M in guarantees is a mistake. There's no way he got that much.

$36 million over 6 years, with some percent guaranteed, would be fine.

yeah, me too. His source that said no substantive discussions had even happened probably gives it away.

Yeah but NFLN is reporting it. They never hardly get anything wrong

I agree. Perfectly acceptable.

$36M guaranteed isn't. But I don't see any way that's what he gets.

I'm sure if you did some digging, you could find several instances of them being wrong. It's the nature of the business.

No Deal for Cassel?
Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 25, 2009, 3:33 p.m.

Contradicting a report from Mike Lombardi of NFL Network and National Football Post, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel has not signed a six-year contract extension that includes $36 million in guaranteed money, according to Peter King of SI.com.

King reports that two NFL sources say “there’s no truth,” to Lombardi’s report with one source asserting that “no substantive talks,” have taken place between Kansas City team officials and Cassel’s agent.

King had previously reported at the NFL owners meeting that Cassel’s representative, David Dunn, was miffed that the Chiefs hadn’t taken action to modify Cassel’s deal.

Cassel is currently assigned a one-year, $14.65 million franchise tender.

UPDATE: Tom Curran of NBCSports.com just got a text message from Matt Cassel that shoots down Mike Lombardi’s report on the National Football Post and NFL Network.

Cassel’s text message reads: “Thank you, but I haven’t signed a deal. I don’t know where they are getting their info.”

Kind of feel a bit disappointed that the deal was offered for that much. Meaning he still could sign for that much or even more.

From Cassel himself? I would think that pretty much kills the speculation.

Who says he was offered that much?

Don't get down, there's no way we give Cassel $36M guaranteed.
