Not so fast.

The NFL will allow a team to use that money for two players, but they have to split the money.

Chiefs used their total amount on Andrew Wylie, so cannot be used for Derrick,

They can still give Derrick a low cost contract, just not use the 4 year veteran money.

I just figured it would automatically split. I’m sure he didn’t get much. I’m glad he’s back. He didn’t get a fair shake last year.

A 20m/year contract would be highway robbery, honestly, to the point that I'm not even sure the Chiefs would lowball Tyreek that much. He's a Top 5 receiver that you could argue is the 2nd most important offensive weapon on the team aside from Mahomes himself. He has to get at least 25m/year.

What wouldn't surprise me is the Chiefs offering a 5 year contract, though, to give them flexibility. Like a 5 year/125m contract, whereas Tyreek is demanding a 4 year/100m contract.

I'm convinced that's what cost them Mathieu, who wants another 3 year contract but the Chiefs clearly prefer longer contracts that give them more flexibility.

Fair points. But I still feel pretty confident that Orlando Brown hasn't signed his franchise tag. So there's 16 mil freed up right at the moment.

So even if the player has been tagged, you can use that money until he signs the tag contract? I can't find anything on that, but $16.62M buys you a lot of fringle players.

I can't confirm that for sure since the new collective bargaining agreement but that was how it used to work.

Correct. No signature, no contract, no cap hit.

Once you franchise tag a player, that full amount goes into escrow and is on the cap unless you rescind them tag.

He’s listed for the tag amount on otc.

I believe this is correct. The only site that spells it out comes from here: https://dairylandexpress.com/2022/03...ing-cap-space/

Here's the relevant part: They have until March 16th at 3pm central to be under the 2022 salary cap. That March 16th date also includes any other money they add on to their cap like an Adam’s tag.

TLDR: Green Bay can tag Adams by the deadline on March 8th and not have to be in legal standing with the 2022 cap until March 16th.

Adams could hold out all offseason, training camp, and preseason while holding $20 million worth of valuable cap space hostage.

Agree, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be successful/efficient/one of the best in the league without him.

If we announced that Tyreek was available for trade, most teams in the NFL would be calling Veach offering a huge package to try to get him.

Why do you suppose that is?

We can help you understand, if you’d like.
