My guess is that the plan he described is what he found to be the easiest way for him to keep his calories down. That's probably where the trial & error comes into play.

Minimal meat, powdered protein. I'm in that last 20 to 15% of body fat.

I've managed to lose 5lbs permanent per week past the excess weight.
