@GaryBedore: Embiid as expected practiced full speed today

Chiefs Pantalones 02-16-2014 05:23 PM

Kansas 7-foot freshman Joel Embiid is expected to return Tuesday night at Texas Tech.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self told ESPN that Embiid, who sat out Saturday's win over TCU, practiced full-speed on Sunday.

"He should play on Tuesday," Self said.

Embiid has been dealing with a nagging knee injury, and then suffered a back injury in the final minutes against West Virginia on Feb. 8. Self told ESPN an MRI "didn't come back with anything major."

Embiid is averaging 10.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. He is considered the frontrunner to be taken first in June's NBA Draft -- if he elects to leave college after this season.

Kansas is 19-6 and 10-2 in Big 12 play.

Good deal. I know Tech isn't the cakewalk that TCU proved to be, but it's not paramount that he plays his regular minutes is it?

They're coming on strong. It's not gonna be easy. Tubby has done a great job.

FYI, KenPom has us as 5 point favs.

If they want to win, it probably is. Tech has been playing at the quality of a tournament team over the last few weeks.

And honestly, if he's not capable of playing his regular minutes yet, he probably shouldn't be playing at all Tuesday.

Yeah, I just wasn't sure if it was a game he could ease back into.

Doesn't sound like it. I'm sure he's fine if Self says so, but I just know how our NC hopes hang on his well-being so I'm a bit worried.

Titty Meat 02-16-2014 06:25 PM

Texas Tech has been on TV a lot. Good team won't be an easy game KU has a rough time in Lubbock. Dunno why Minnesota ever got rid of Tubby.

Don't worry, I'm sure there will be more than enough slurs being thrown around in Lubbock to make up for it.

You serious? They lost in a blowout to Texas just last week without him, lost at home to Oklahoma a few days later, and are on their way to losing to a bad Baylor team. Smart was the only thing keeping their offense half decent.

Even while missing 3 games and going through a month long shooting slump before that, Smart has been the best player statistically in the conference that isn't out of KU (which puts him 4th in the B12 behind Wiggins, Embiid, and Ellis).

Roy has a little bit of the edge in the post season dept w/ 3 Final Fours and 2 National Championships compared to 2 Final Fours and 1 National Championship for Self.

Self has been so close so many times, getting beat in the elite 8, and getting beat by inferior teams. Self's post season numbers should be a lot better than what they are. Imagine if Self were able to defeat GaTech in 2004, UCLA in 2007, and VCU in 2011, he'd have 5 Final Fours to his name in a 10-year span.

BUT

One of the Final Four losses came to Bill Self's Jayhawks. And Self has yet to lose to Roy while at Kansas, and he's won in pretty good fashion too.

Self has never missed a NCAA Tournament while at Kansas, Roy's Heels failed to get there in 2010, and it wasn't because of NCAA probation either.

Self's reg. season numbers do trump Roy's, especially as of late. UNC has been slowly but sure slipping away from that top tier status. I mean they still are as a formality with the name/history/coach/prestige, but they're slipping in the winning/production dept.

Self has 9 straight Big12 reg season conf titles, and is probably going to receive his 10th after this season or at least a share of it. That's insane regardless of who you're comparing it to, and it's more impressive than the run UCLA had in it's conference in the 70's because there wasn't the parity in the game like there is now and the game overall is much different now.

Roy will have gone 2 yrs since his last reg season conf title, though he's won 6 which is impressive, that doesn't match the 10 consecutive titles Self has won. And Self has been able to accomplish this by coaching in the tougher conference regardless of what all of the east coast biased media will tell you about the ACC. This isn't the 90's and into the early 2000's anymore. Big12 has long passed the ACC in terms of basketball conference strength.

Roy has only won 2 ACC Tournament Championships (probably the most worthless of all championships, these tournaments don't usually benefit schools like UNC or KU, but in comparison Self has won 6 in a 10-year span.

But Final Fours and NC's is why you play/coach the game, and Roy has Self beat in that category, may not be for long, and Self will probably end up passing Roy in that dept when it's all said and done.

With Smart, they lost @OU by 12, without him they lost to OU by 3. With Smart, they lost to Baylor by 6, without him they lost @Baylor by 6 in OT. Yeah, they were terrible at Texas... so was Kansas.

In the 4 games before the suspension, they lost by an average of 76-70 (not including the 3 OTs against ISU)... 78-69 in the 3 games since.

Small sample sizes, etc; but it really hasn't made much of a difference. Yeah, he ends up with 15+ points because he hits 10 FTs a game or whatever, but as it's been pointed out in the past, he also takes terrible shots and costs his team possessions. It's not like they missed that 3/14 and 0/7 effort from the first time he played Baylor.

I doubt that. Roy has 7 Final Fours now while Self only has 2. I doubt Self will be able to ever catch him. He's just punted away too many golden opportunities in the Elite 8 as you stated. NC's are different though since it's only 2-1. Self can, and probably will, catch him there.

This is like arguing that because KU won by 30 over TCU without Embiid rather than 22 with him, that KU is a better team without him. If you seriously think Marcus Smart hurts his team rather than helps, you both don't understand what you're watching nor do you understand how to read his statistics.

I didn't say he hurts the team overall, but his play in the past month clearly wasn't helping... he wasn't the only thing holding them together while flopping around, going 3/14 from the field, and hitting 10 FTs. They can make up 10 or 15 points with a higher percentage of quality possessions.

I hated to bring up one game, because one or 3 games is obviously too small of a sample to determine anything, but the fact is they haven't won a game in a month. When Smart is playing well, of course he's going to elevate the team... and love him or hate him, it's pretty clear he wasn't doing that in the few weeks before his suspension.

You're ignoring that even when he doesn't shoot well, he still helps in other areas (such as playmaking, FT ability, and elite level defense). It may not make up entirely for going 3 for 14 from the field in a given game, but he still does things that nobody else on that team is capable of doing.

And if he plays at the level he's established over the last 2 seasons, you're getting not only one of the best players in the B12, but one of the better players in the country. This isn't disputable.

Buehler445 02-18-2014 01:48 PM

The other thing is that they are still trying to have Markel (sp?) Brown trying to drive the basket, and he's awful at it. If nothing else, having Smart back would allow Brown to NOT drive the rim.

Either way, interesting stats Bearcat. Hadn't thought of it that way.

Without Smart, OSU's offense is basically Brown and Nash isolation plays. It limits the effectiveness and efficiency of all their players, especially Forte (who can't create his own shot) and Brown (who is forced into doing things that he isn't comfortable with).

It's called 'Legitimate Rape' people. Get it right.

How funny is it tISU by beating Texas helps potentially solidify our 10th straight title? Awesome.

ArrowheadHawk 02-18-2014 09:41 PM

2 game lead with 5 left. Win on Saturday and we are one win away from ten straight.

Chiefs Pantalones 02-18-2014 09:49 PM

This win means we will have a winning road record in league games. We have never had a losing Big 12 road record.

KC_Connection 02-18-2014 09:57 PM

If they can beat UT, they'll be looking at a 3 game lead with 4 to play. So really, this Saturday is pretty much for the conference.

If we don't win, we only have a one game lead with two probable losses left on our schedule. IMO this is a must win. You don't want to open the door for a possibility that Texas ties us for the championship but beat us twice. We need to win this game on Saturday to erase all doubt that we are the best team in the league.

According to KenPom that was not just KU's lowest pace game of the year (54 pos.) but lowest on record since 2003. Tubby knows how to coach. Employed the perfect strategy to keep his team in the game
