Right now? Yes. In 2018? He might be then, too. The question is if you give him a lucrative long-term deal for age 32-on, how does he hold up? If he stops putting up elite defensive and baserunning contributions and stops getting 20 leg hits a year, are you still getting enough from him for what you're going to pay him?
If he hits at the same level in 2016 and 2017 as he did in 2015, then year, you probably feel pretty good about that.
Hell, if he hits at the same level in 2016, you can start talking to him then, probably, and feel pretty good about him holding up.

It won't come down to losing him for nothing. If he leaves as a FA, there will be some sort of compensation for KC. It makes no sense to move that key of a member of the team before the 2017 season, a season in which KC will be expecting to repeat regardless of what happens this season.
I also no longer am 100 percent certain Hosmer will leave. If his play levels out where it did last season, they will have a chance to keep him. Maybe not a great one, but better than zero.

Yeah, there's a growing number of people on the Royals subreddit who think trading Hos after 16 is the way to go.
**** that noise. I don't care what the next year brings, you simply don't gut a WS caliber team.

Absolutely not. No they likely won't be as good after 17, but they'll still have Gordon and Perez. Ventura will be entering his prime and he's locked up long term. And hopefully they can sign Moose or Hos. Then add Mondesi and Cuthbert to the mix, maybe Starling can come around, plus Zimmer, Almonte, maybe Ashe Russell. Plus any contracts they hand out will be mostly under a new TV contract. It hopefully won't be that bleak.

It's that way on the Scout board, too. I just don't get it. The logic of trading away a piece that can help you have a championship type season NOW to get guys who may help and who may not help you get back to that point down the road is just silly.
