Thick thighs and ass is what generates power so a TE can anchor down in his blocks, or power through a LB or a physical DB to gain leverage and positioning.

Fortson running routes and catching passes isn't what's in question here. Those are the tings he SHOULD be good at. It's everything else that's required to be a real TE is what's in question.

But again, he's not asked to do those other things in this offense much.

Fortson's probably gonna have more catches than Mecole the way things are going.

He only really started one year at Iowa and parlayed that into a higher draft pick.

He will be. Or he won't see the field. He's not taking Kelce's spot. And TE2 IS required to block and do traditional TE stuff, hence why they keep guys like Blake Bell around.

If your argument is, "he can make the team as TE #4", ok sure. But by that same logic, it also means there's a good chance he goes to the PS.

And if we're debating TE#4, we're really debating, effectively, a PS player, because he'll never see the field.

Nothing to do with the way Kelce plays the position. He runs routes, he positions, he catches like a TE. He has the build of a TE.

And Fortson can so the same thing from the slot regardless of how small his butt is.

I disagree. What Kelce does is special.

If they could just convert big WR's to TE's with success we'd see it all over the league.

But we don't.

Why not?

Why is Jon Baldwin not running around at TE right now? He had the same damn size and skillset as Fortson. Kelvin Benjamin? The list can go on and on. There's no shortage of big WR's in this league.

There's a physicality required to play the TE position that WR's don't often have, as they aren't built that way. Hence the reason you pretty much never see that conversion in this league.

When guys say, "oh Kelce is just a big WR!" You're really not understanding why Kelce is as good as he is, and you're kinda shitting on him. He's not some big WR playing TE. IMO, that a disrespectful representation of what Kelce is.

I've never seen a TE with Fortson's build. At least i can't think of any right now. Usually there's a good pro comp for most players. When there isn't, it begs the question of, "well, what IS he then?"

What about Waller?

When Patrick Mahomes is your quarterback, the correct answer is... ketchup.

I'm not saying it will be successful. It's been tried over and over again.

But in today's NFL, TE's aren't gonna be asked to be Jason Dunn. Look at the 2nd TE's we've had here. I don't think it's hard to fathom him becoming Demetrius Harris.

He looks like Darren Waller. Very similar build.

Sassy Squatch 08-18-2021 11:00 AM

Eh. Waller still has about 15 lbs on him if he's playing at 244.

TE's are big WR's these days. :thumb:

Fortson made the team with that slick one handed grab.

RunKC 08-18-2021 11:01 AM

Waller was 238 lbs and listed as a WR when he was drafted. He slowly got bigger. Looks like Jody is trying to take the same path
