This is a sense of urgency, we need to bring the trophy home - and NOW is the best opportunity for that.

His current contract for this year fits into the Chiefs remaining cap space.

Next year, the Chiefs have $50m cap space. After extensions and re-signing role players, there will be 20-35m available for new free agents, I think ET fits fine in that.

I still hope they actually just pick up ET in free agency next year.
