Different TV era. It hasn't been that way since the 1992 Olympics. Back then with fewer channels, no streaming, less effective internet, people were more likely to watch the Olympics. Even 10 to 15 years ago there were more people watching basic and cable TV. Outside of the Super Bowl, I'm not sure any other shows get similar viewership over time. Nobody watches award shows anymore either.

No. Then only the top countries will ever score medals.

Russia is other worldly when it comes to state sponsored cheating. It shouldn't be rewarded.

I bet china is up there as well.

Just looked it up. 2 miles. They're running about 1:40 mins or so. That is hauling ass.

1992 you could more easily avoid spoilers and know what happened at the Olympics. No affordable wide spread streaming was available.

What part of Russia was Lance Armstrong from?

If you think the American athletes aren't cheating, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you.

I'm always into the Olympics. Record all day and then catch up at night. Makes for a rough couple of weeks, sleep wise, but it's worth it. Really love the Biathlon and Cross Country events. Told my wife, that if Jessie Diggins comes calling, it's been a great run and it's nothing personal.

Ayumu Hirano just put down one of the best halfpipe runs I’ve ever seen and he got a 2nd place score. This might be one of the worst judges decisions in the history of the Olympics. Hopefully it doesn’t rob him of the gold. He definitely earned it. It almost seems like they’re keeping it low just for Shaun White to be able to beat his score on his final run.

The only thing I can think of was they didn’t like the amplitude. But the mf’er landed a ****ing triple.

Pretty bad look for the American judge. They have a chance to fix this if he has another strong run. I hope he nails it.

Justice for Hirano on the 3rd run. He crushed it and they rewarded him with the Gold.

POND_OF_RED 02-10-2022 08:58 PM

Thankfully he nailed that again and they got a chance to correct it. The American judge was just hopeful that Shaun White could pull off a massive final run I think and knew even a massive run at his age couldn’t beat a 96. It’s a bad look for that judge for sure. Thankful it ended up not costing him an Olympic gold. That was a really impressive run. To do it twice with the pressure on was even more impressive.

kjwood75nro 02-11-2022 12:09 AM

Can't help but think that the U.S. is so cucked by China that their judges would **** a Japanese competitor on behalf of the glorious Winnie the Pooh.

jdubya 02-11-2022 12:52 AM

Meh, all worked out in the end. Aren’t the lowest and highest scores canceled anyway? So the US score didn’t count…….just not a great look

Chiefnj2 02-11-2022 07:13 AM

The half-pipe last night was the best watch of the Olympics so far. I'm glad the kid nailed his third run to get the gold. He definitely deserved it. I love the fact that all the boarders go for gold and don't really care if they fall. Nobody seems to take a safe run for bronze.

NBC’s Winter Olympics Ratings Are Heading Toward a Historic Low

An average of 12.3 million nightly viewers per day have watched the Winter Olympics on Comcast Corp.’s NBCUniversal TV and streaming channels through Feb. 8. That compares with about 23 million viewers at the same point for the 2018 games in PyeongChang, South Korea, according to an NBC spokesman.

NBC anticipated about 40% fewer viewers than four years ago and cut its ad rates by a similar amount, according to people familiar with the matter. The network was trying to avoid what happened during the Tokyo games last summer, when the ratings fell below what it had guaranteed. That hurt NBC’s potential revenue because the broadcaster had to give additional commercial time to advertisers to make up for the shortfall.

She wanted to “inspire” Chinese girls. A good thought and noble cause. She’s too naive to understand Chinese girls don’t have a choice.

I suspect it was just about the money. They made her an offer she and her team/family couldn't refuse. And she's far from the first athlete to make that choice when given the choice between two countries to represent at a national level.

If not NHL players, I wish it would have been a retry of the World Juniors.

I know the NHL had planned on it this time around, but I've never really read into why it's such a big ****ing deal... I assume the vast majority of players want to play in the Olympics, and what amounts to All Star teams is the best thing in sports (granted, Canada should get two teams). I just default to blaming Bettman every time it doesn't happen. :cuss:

They're currently making up games that were cancelled in late December/early January... and I think some of that was empty stadiums in Canada as opposed to players being on Covid protocol.

The schedule was already going into late April with the Olympic break... I'm sure they could have put a bit more effort into making up games though.

Overall though, there are always weeks/months of negotiations and crap, so I wasn't surprised they were so quick to pull the plug on it. :(

Make fun of curling all you want, but damn how do you frantically whip that Swiffer side to side while leaning hard on it and sliding down the ice in a pair of Nikes without hitting the stone with the Swiffer, or hitting any other stones or sliding into a stone. Skills.

She was promoted and pushed as one of the faces of the US team along with Nathan Chen and Shaun White. Chen delivered, White at least made a final and went out with somewhat of a bang, Shiffren has totally bombed. Didn't finish in two events and didn't come close to medaling in two others. I really like her because (besides the obvious USA) she is very honest and real in interviews but it's hard to equate this size of a collapse into other sports terms. It would kinda be like if Mahomes played like he did in the 2nd half of the AFCCG in 4 straight big games.

Well, they're not quite Nikes like the kind you or I wear, but curling does take significant skill. I usually record and FF to the last few ends but I do like a good US Olympic curling match.

She was the one of the best skiers in the world coming into the Olympics but when she fell 5 gates into her first run, she just mentally broke. Unfortunately, she was always dependent upon her dad to help guide her through stuff like this, but he died a couple of years ago.
She's a complete head case right now. She's back skiing but seems tentative to push the boundaries like she normally does.

I rode a couple lifts with a guy who's niece skiid with her from the time she was 2 years old. His sister is really good friends with the family and said she's just about then nicest person you'll ever meet.

And evidently that little town she's from (Edwards) used to be little more than a trailer park on the outskirts of Vail before it turned into a little suburb a few years back. Shiffrin and River Radamus are both from that same little 'burb.

Shiffrin is getting a lot of press because she's absolutely DOMINATED women's downhill for the last several years and everyone likes her. And she's a good story. Unfortunately she imploded. It doesn't detract from her greatness, but yeah - it's been a pretty catastrophic Olympics for her.

.

Seems legit. She comes across as very genuine and down to earth. It doesn't seem like anyone from anywhere is taking any joy in her struggles. Just a bummer she had to have it go down on really the one stage anyone outside of professional ski junkies cares about. My guess would be she uses it as motivation and comes back full force in 2026 but we'll see.

NBC needs to lose their broadcast rights the next time it is up. The graphics are dated, and the broadcasts look like nothing has changed in 20 years. Why are they not partnering with AWS to show meaningful stats, speeds, etc is beyond me. Every other sports broadcast is doing this. I assume NBC is not because there is no competition for broadcasting the olympics.

That’s a completely different situation. jurgen klinsmann Was hired to coach the usmnt (which I assume you’re taking about) and guide the youth leagues.

He wasn’t an athlete representing their country.

Their are numerous American coaches, coaching teams all over the world abs Vice versa.

The athletes themselves aren’t coaches.

I like these semi amateur hockey players. Love these games. I was raised that the Olympian’s were all amateurs which made watching the games so fun. Once all the “pro” athletes took over, it was just another weekend of mostly meaningless sports

Such brutal hockey to watch. Again, I blame the NHL for this.

What about the millions of native americans slaughtered to formulate this great nation? BWeally?!?

Absolutely not. Imagine you are a great speed skater, and the only way you can become the best is to jeopardize your body to become better with drugs that have dangerous long term consequences. **** that.

Let them snort coke, do marijuana, I don't care. But absolutely no PED's ever unless you make a separate division for it.

Only issue with this is where you draw the line in what is considered a performance enhancing drug? Athletes are already taking all kinds of performance enhancing drugs and we are absolutely fine with it unless some wizard behind the curtain labels that particular one as banned. What if we keep the olympics as is, but create a second international games even where anything goes and there is no testing?

Not sure what that has to do with this topic?

When you can just become a free agent of any country - then get a sham citizenship just to play for them - the whole playing for your country thing gets super watered down.

If you are born somewhere, citizen somewhere, you play for that team. Period. If you don't like that, you don't have to play in the Olympics or National Teams. Door is always open to any pro team.

And it shouldn't be allowed for National Teams or the Olympics.

It also sickens me that men coach women in WOMENS basketball & other WOMENS sports. These ****s are just taking away a spot that should go to a qualified women. It's completely asinine. What kind of man would coach girls high school sports? Creeps, mainly. Sure you get some good guys in there, but it's just opening up a can of worms.

What about them? They fought wars and lost.

They weren't American citizens at the time but foreign enemies.

Probably has a parent from China. I don't think the situation is that uncommon.

It isn't and it is why the Olympics have become a farce.

I knew a lady who played for New Zealand softball. Her dad was from NZ. She was born in America. But that loophole allowed her to play for NZ. It makes little sense but that is the world for you.

Not sure if a double bird is NSFW or not, but we'll put it in the tags just in case.

Spoiler!

More athletes leads to more teams which provides more content for NBC.

The Winter Olympics setting (bad) records.

And the night with the most viewership was post-Super Bowl on Sunday… and it still lost 90%+ of the Super Bowl viewership.

My God. 30 hours after a bout of food poisoning, Jessie Diggins becomes the first American to ever win multiple medals in Cross Country by taking the silver in the 30km mass start. What a bad ass!

These are all recent Olympics. That's more telling than the "Beijing" part. People just don't watch the Olympics (or TV in general) like they used to.
