if the virus is inside everyone and they kept the bite clean so he didn't die from the actual bite. Why does getting bit turn them into zombies?

Because if it wasn't that way there would be a lot less tension during zombie attacks.

It's actually harder to do what he did. You have to shift your grip closer to the barbed wire with an awkward hand hold and risk cutting your hands.
