Re: Brady Singer

Been an absolute fail of a year for him and seems to be regressing as a pitcher from last year. Read something interesting recently. Everyone knows about Singer favoring basically only throwing 2 pitches (because that’s what he’s most comfortable with) and not accessing his 4 pitch arsenal (also has the change and the 4 seamer). 4 seamer has actually been fairly effective for him, although a VERY small sample size. His change gets hammered when he uses it (batters hitting over .400 against it), but he needs to learn to use it, get more comfortable with it and use it more effectively so as to compliment his other pitches. Apparently the Royals (I’m guessing Eldred & Matheny) have been trying to get him to use it more. But he is refusing to. Whether that’s due to him just not being comfortable with it or just Brady being Brady (he has a little Hosmer in him, apparently) wanting to do it his way cause that’s what he thinks is best and has gotten him to to the big leagues even though ‘his way’ doesn’t seem to be working against Major League hitters now that they’ve seen his stuff.

Theory: so taking all this into account and watching Singer literally ‘crash and burn’ almost every start lately, part of me wonders if the Royals are ‘letting’ him fail on purpose. I.E. Okay, fine Brady, you do it your way and we’ll let you see where it gets you. The thinking being, maybe if he has a complete year of failure and getting blasted, maybe in the off-season he’ll be more open to suggestions and changing his pitching approach in order to be successful in MLB going forward. So while we’ve been lambasting Eldred and Matheny regarding the pitching (deservedly so, mind you), maybe the Singer situation isn’t their fault but more his?

Anyway, it’s just a theory mind you, but reading some stuff and looking at things with him this year and his general demeanor and how he goes about things (again, little Hosmer and Moose in him), it wouldn’t completely shock me if this were true. The fact that the Royals are willingly allowing Brady to bomb this year.

Doesn’t change the fact that both Matheny and his entire staff need to go. This team doesn’t do ANYTHING well (pitching, hitting, defense, base running) and that’s an indictment on the coaching staff every bit as much as the players.

But maybe above is what’s really happening with Brady Singer and maybe the Royals haven’t completely ruined him.

Or maybe I’m just being an optimist with regards to Singer . . . . . . .

After the last start Brady told the KCStar that having a third pitch "doesn't matter at all". So if that's the strategy, it doesn't seem to be going well.

He says when he locates, he does fine with just the fastball and the slider. Possible he's just on the defensive, but I don't see why there’s an aversion to forcing him down to AAA to work on a third pitch for a while.

Not yet, but maybe it’s needs a little more time (like a whole season of failure). And Singers an idiot if he really believes ‘you don’t need a third pitch’ to be successful as a major league starter. I can count on one hand (maybe two) the number of starters that have been successful utilizing a two pitch approach long term and those guys were basically all elite and HOF type pitchers. Brady isn’t in that stratosphere (at least not yet). You can get away with that as a reliever, but not as a starter long term.

Brady needs to wake up.

I read something about Danny Duffy being traded?

I was hoping the team would come out hot from the break; nope, same old Royals. Lose 2 of 3 to the Orioles. Just sad.

I saw him at Quik Trip in Belton looking at mobile homes. Things are heating up.

Singer needs a different look off of the 2-seamer and slider. Maybe they ARE letting him fail until he's willing to talk and try something new.

But the only solution isn't a changeup.

Singer is resistant to using rapsodo cameras and data and things like that (or at least has been in the past), and Eldred is, too. So it's kind of a perfect storm of stubborn.

I look at Singer and see a guy who could add a cutter instead of a change and probably get just as much, if not more, out of it. An effective cut fastball should make both the 2-seam heater and the slider play up (because it gives a pitch that looks like both of those but finishes different).

Imagine a guy with absolutely no major league success and is currently terrible acting like he's smarter than everyone else. Ship him to Omaha.

This. Ship him down.

I remember when they did it with Moose.

This is way too conventional thinking. GMDM is smarter than you. And me. and everyone. Which is exactly why he will keep Singer at the Big leagues. Because he is going to outsmart this whole situation.

The first rumblings of a "Save Our Royals" movement can be seen in the Chiefs and Royals subreddits today (the ten year anniversary of SOC is next year, believe it or not).

Obviously, with a World Series Championship 6 years ago, there would be more resistance to getting something like this going, but Matheny and his coaching staff returning next year just might do the trick.

Didn’t they name their baby Royal or KC or something like that?
