Correct, but teams are allowed to discuss trades and compensation with other teams during this period. The NFL front office is just clamping down on teams releasing this information until it can become official.

not from what I saw, Proof source?

You're missing a key element. Technically they can't execute the trade anytime soon, so by NFL rules they can't grant the Redskins a small window.

Sure, but that period has yet to begin.

It's exactly the same same scenario...which is why this whole secrecy/"only one team interested" is sketchy as ****.

Rams have a 3 billion dollar stadium in the works...and the NFL needs them to succeed. KC plays LA in Mexico this year...you get the picture.

There is only one financial team in the NFL...and it's divided into 32 parts. Hunt handing over Peters to LA (20 million people) is actually beneficial to him.

Trying to sell that no team is interested in Peters is total dogshit. "we've been shopping him for 3 weeks"...yeah right.

No, it's going to take some time. A LOT of time. It's extensive!

Terez said at best "value of a second" That could be two 3rds at best.

Been digging on potential Peters compensation. Spoke to multiple NFL executives. My guess? Second-round value at best. Chiefs have been trying to move him for three-plus weeks, but it sounds like teams didn't know how he’d acclimate into their culture with a looming payday. https://t.co/1Fb9wxx5y0
— Terez A. Disagree, Why do I disagree? Because it's the NFL and if Chiefs broke a rule, 31 owners would start crying like baby's... I am sure after Maclin, they dot the i's and cross the t's.

Let's break it down:

1. Teams can talk and agree on trades during this "dead period"
2. The trades during this "dead period" aren't official and either team can back out
3. Teams can't talk about said trade publicly
4. The player(s) involved can

Well, answer the question! How could this happen in January?
Officially, it really didn't.

Really?
Really. The first moment NFL teams can consummate a trade is 4 p.m. ET on March 14.

Uh, you might want to check the headlines on ESPN.
I didn't say it was the first moment teams could discuss trades. It's perfectly legal, and more common than you might realize, for teams to exchange ideas about potential deals in the days, weeks and even months leading up to the official start of the trading period. The only thing they can't do is finalize the paperwork. That means neither team can discuss it publicly, but there's nothing stopping Smith from doing so.

Basically it goes like this.

The rules give teams a very small window for tampering before FA begins, but teams tamper around the clock unofficially.

They act like it doesn't take place while their own media arm reports on it and will only act on it if someone bitches. Chip Kelly whined like a bitch and Troy Vincent is still throbbing over Andy, so they got got. The whole wink wink system until we feel like slamming the book on someone is dumb and a reason why the NFL can be real dumb.

Their own rules are a cluster **** and contradicts itself constantly.

I hope the Chiefs back out of it.
