Damn good pick by the Chiefs. Menzie played corner but projects as a safety in the NFL. We play 3 safeties alot and one is normally a coverage guy. Here you go.

My God, I miss one season and the whole thing goes tits-up. Shame on me.

I agree take Moore. This draft has been a disaster. I thought we should have taken Weeden #1, our pick @2 was perfect, #3 should have been that Ta'amu or whatever guy and in the 4th the kid that blocked 9 punts in college.

He's not very fast, and I feel like he was one of the players feeding off the abilities of the others in that Bama defense.

As a safety, he sounds like he could be a poor man's Brandon Taylor.

He is consistently around the ball, however, and making splash plays for the decorated Crimson Tide defense. He is the type of player whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts in terms of the type of player he will be on Sundays. He is a playmaker and savvy cover man who has second-round value.

sounds a lot like lewis

I like taking defensive players from Bama. He will be very well coached coming in.

Frosty 04-28-2012 12:34 PM

Chiefs passed on a chance to get another Greenwood on the team (Lions' pick)

He played CB at Bama but will play safety here. Actually a really good fit, IMO, since we utilize 3 safeties and he can play both man & zone and has good cover skills.

A- Grade
DeQuan Menzie can play both cornerback and safety. Coincidentally, the Chiefs needed depth in both areas, especially the latter, since Romeo Crennel loves having three safeties on the field. Menzie was ranked No. 80 on Mike Mayock's big board, so he provides really good value in Round 5.

the Talking Can 04-28-2012 12:36 PM

well, we addressed needs down the line in this draft...

nothing sexy, don't know what to think about most picks...roll the dice

Menzie #80 on Mayock's big board. Will be able to backup CB and S and play ST. Good value in the 5th round.

Notes:

Was a prep standout in Georgia before attending Copiah-Lincoln Community College (Miss.) for two years, where he recorded 40 tackles and six interceptions in 2008 and 51 tackles and one interception in ’09 as a two-year starter. At Alabama, suffered a torn Achilles in April ’10 but returned to start the season opener against San Jose State. Played in 12 games (six starts), in ’10, recording 33 tackles, four pass breakups and zero interceptions with five tackles for loss and two sacks. Made two starts at RCB spot and four as a nickel back. Started all 13 games for the national champions in ’11 and totaled 41-11-1 with four tackles for loss, 1 1⁄2 sacks. Returned his lone interception 25 yards for a TD against Arkansas. Suffered a left shoulder injury at the Senior Bowl and did not run at the Combine because of a strained right hamstring.
Positives:

Good size. Reads and reacts quickly. Very physical — willing tackler who tries to square and wrap up ballcarriers. Aware in zone — plays with his eyes and passes off receivers. Good ball reactions. Is versatile and has experience playing the slot. Is well-respected and possesses terrific character. Dependable producer.
Negatives:

Has short arms and small hands. Marginal speed and twitch for the cornerback position. Limited in man coverage — loses ground at the break point and struggles to shadow more athletic receivers. Has a 33-inch vertical jump.
Summary:

Tough, competitive college cornerback who projects better to safety, where his physicality plays better. Might not have the juice to start, but could be a solid backup for a zone team and become a fourth safety and special-teams producer. Has make-it qualities and will find a way to contribute. Scouts have compared him to a poor man’s version of Houston Texans starting SS Glover Quin.
