I just don't see how Self can sell anybody else decent on playing time on a roster that stacked.

KC_Connection 05-24-2023 03:13 PM

I mean, you know Harris, McCullar, and Dickinson are playing 30+ a game every game in non-blowouts. Playing time starts running out pretty quickly from there.

BWillie 05-24-2023 03:29 PM

Again I dont want KJ starting if McCullar is the 3. I would prefer McCullar to play a small 4 and then KJ backup Dickinson. We simply do not have enough shooting if its Harris, Timberlake, McCullar, KJ, and Dickinson

It's actually the opposite, they will only add another player if it's a game-changer.

Shay is pretty connected and is conservative with these kinds of things which makes me think it's true

I'd say Nelson pushes someone else out of minutes rather that struggles to get them. He'd back up 5 or go huge and play the 4 with Dickinson

Braun would get the shit end of the stick I think

That’s where I’m at.

And like I said before, by the end of the year teams only play a max of like 8 guys anyway. There’s only so many minutes to go around.

If it happens with Nelson or Udeh, great. I’m completely satisfied with this rotation as is though.

RaidersOftheCellar 05-24-2023 05:36 PM

I think the feeling was that there’s a good chance they’d pocket the last scholarship. But this stuff is really fluid. If they can land one of Nelson, Kaluma, Pullin or Udeh, I think they do it. If not, they’ll probably run with what they have.

smithandrew051 05-24-2023 05:38 PM

Love this. His playing time might be the hardest hit today, but he isn’t phased.

Mccullar is the best defender Ive ever seen at KU.

My vote is Releford.

He didn’t rack up steaks or blocks but his dudes just straight up didn’t get the ball. He was so ****ing good.

Yeah I can see that. Forgot about Releford. Seems like McCullar is longer and has a little more ability to get steals and blocks.

McCullar is crafty as **** and gets really weird steals and shit that are huge. Plus he is a really ****ing good rebounder. There is an argument to be made that McCullars rebounding is the reason the small lineup could work. I’m so damn glad he’s back.

But if I need to lock a guy up, Releford is my guy. I fully admit I’m an irrational Releford homer, but godDAMN I loved watching that dude work.

I'd probably go Chalmers, R. Robinson, Garrett, Embiid, and Withey (kind of cheating by taking 2 Cs, but both were too good not to include).

I think Chalmers is easily the best guard/wing defender we've ever had under Self. Maybe the best defender period. He started and played 30+ minutes a game for two NBA championship teams as well and that certainly wasn't because of his offense.

Some notable defensive seasons by DBPM over the last 15 seasons (the earliest I could find anybody tracking it):

2008 Chalmers 6.8 DBPM
2012 Withey 6.8 DBPM
(2023 Udeh 6.8 DBPM in very limited minutes)
2014 Embiid 6.4 DBPM
2013 Withey 6.3 DPBM
2008 R Robinson 5.5 DBPM
2016 Traylor 5.4 DBPM
2010 Aldrich 5.2 DBPM
2011 Withey 4.8 DBPM
2020 Udoka 4.8 DBPM
2020 Garrett 4.7 DBPM
2023 McCullar 4.5 DBPM
2009 Aldrich 4.5 DBPM
2021 Harris 4.1 DBPM
2021 Garrett 3.9 DBPM

From last season's thread. McCullar ended up at 5.3 DBPM, so he's right in the middle (and only behind Chalmers/Robinson for guard/wing defenders).

The more I think about it, I’d probably go:

Chalmers
Garrett
McCullar
Withey
Embiid

Robinson was great, but McCullar is just so big, versatile, and physical. Bigger guards could absolutely give Russell some problems, so I’d sacrifice some quick hands and long arms for size and versatility.
