A few things:

1) By that point, 1950 had already dismantled their camp, so you can't really put the onus on them for being next door to something they weren't actually next door to at that point

1.) is there proof of the claim that protesters passed around that old image? The hoax articles from the right wing sites didn't establish that, at least not the articles I read.

2.) The students are very clearly of the mind that Mizzou's lack of response to a litany of incidents and threats, and a general climate of racial othering & discomfort (which, yes, that word you hate -- "microaggressions" -- speaks succinctly to) over many months is where the tag of "institutional" racism comes from. Feel free and disagree with them, but the speeches from Concerned Student 1950 have mentioned from the start how black student leadership at Mizzou has tried over the past two years to get the school to take active steps at making the campus a place where students of color don't need a "black cultural center" or "safe spaces" just to be able to briefly escape a climate of racial bigotry. These students feel like they were ignored or given the runaround when trying to work through official channels. They didn't go from 0 to Hunger Strike; it's been a process. You might feel like there isn't much that a school administration CAN do to change the hearts & minds of bigots in the student body and/or Columbia community, but the student activists feel differently AND they feel like they couldn't get a dialogue going with the school about it. It feels institutional to them because they've been trying to work with an institution that's been, they feel anyway, pushing them & their concerns aside.

I've never owned a pair of white pants, but I'm thinking of buying a pair for the game.

ITHACA, NY -- Hundreds of Ithaca College students and supporters gathered at the center of campus Wednesday to demand the resignation of college president Tom Rochon and an overhaul of the structures at the campus that they said make students of color feel unsafe and excluded.

The protest, which began around 1:30 p.m. and attracted at least 750 people, was in response to what organizers said were a series of incidents that demonstrated cultural insensitivity and exclusion of certain groups.

"I've never had a black professor," said junior Nigel Cyril, who was holding a sign asking the students to vote no confidence in the president. "I do feel the racial tensions in this college. I've been pretty quiet so far, but it's time for (the president) to do something."

The demonstration, organized by the group People of Color at Ithaca College, featured chants of "Tom Rochon! No confidence" and a die-in, where students and protesters lay on a main campus thoroughfare in hopes of drawing the attention of students moving between classes.

"Diversity and inclusion here at Ithaca College is nothing more than an image," shouted student Tyler Reighn to the crowd from a megaphone. "...We have no desire to work within this broken structure."

College spokesman David Maley said Rochon attended a portion of the protest to listen and "to speak if asked by the students".

Rochon also on Wednesday announced the hiring of a "chief diversity officer" to "improve our campus's racial climate and build a culture that lives up to its values of civility, mutual respect, and justice." Dr. Roger Richardson, associate provost for diversity, inclusion, and engagement, will serve in an acting role for this position until it has been filled, the college said.

Rochon was not available, but Maley provided a letter from the college's board of trustees chair.

"It is not easy to see the IC community that I love going through such a difficult time—to see so many of our students recounting experiences that leave them feeling fear, pain, and alienation at a time in their lives when they should instead be feeling welcomed, supported, and inspired," chair Tom Grape wrote.

The statement makes no mention of Rochon's plans as president and he said " the board and I are actively partnering with Tom Rochon and other campus leaders" to make sure the college listens and takes actions based on the students' concerns.

Maley said it was "not appropriate for the president to comment on his own position since presidential appointments are by the Board of Trustees" when asked if he would be resigning.

One recent incident that caused tensions, organizers have said, is comments made by a college alumni, Christopher Burch, at the college's Blue Sky event in early October. Burch referred to a fellow alumna, Tatiana Sy, as a "savage" after she described her "savage hunger" in launching her professional career, the Ithacan reported at the time.

Another source of tension was a forum Oct. 27 held by the Ithaca College administration called "Addressing Community Action on Racism and Cultural Bias." The aim of the forum was for the president and college officials to come up with actions to take to improve the racial tension on campus. Organizers said they were frustrated that most, if not all, of the officials in attendance were white men.

Also, some students were angered a few weeks ago due to a fraternity's party theme, which some students interpreted as having racist undertones, according to the Ithacan.

The calls for Rochon's resignation echo those made at other college campuses recently. The president of the University of Missouri, for example, resigned his post after calls from students frustrated at what they said was a lack of racial understanding and inclusion at that campus.

Organizers said they had plans to hold a demonstration since before the Missouri university president stepped down.
