How that city doesn't have an NFL team is frustrating as hell. I love a good weekend in Vegas, but traveling to SD is always money in my opinion.

Dean Spanos put it to a vote hey build me a stadium in the middle of downtown where I plan to pay not one dime and **** traffic up even more than it already is for like 7 years!

And the people of San Diego said uh, hey you cash-starved wannabe billionaire go **** yourself.

So he packed up and left. And it's really sad because Dean couldn't even afford to build a stadium so now he has a LANDLORD who is a direct competitor for eyeballs in the same city and nobody gives a shit about them at all.

And the saddest thing is...it worked. They were right to tell him to shove it, he wanted to totally screw up downtown.

Kansas City’s former mayor, Sly James, is being paid by the Chiefs and the Royals to try and help get Jackson County Question 1 passed April 2.

In our interview with James Wednesday, he said one of the reasons the East Village wasn’t picked for the Royals new stadium site was the cost of rebuilding the highway interchange downtown would have been too expensive for the state.

“Number two, the fact that it was brought up that by doing that and building an entertainment district around it, you’re actually competing with Power and Light, and that doesn’t help,” James said that day.

KCUnited 06-21-2024 11:28 AM

Ah yeah I remember reading some grumblings about highway logistics being a challenge for the EV

The P&L bit seems odd as the EV seems more like a continuation of an existing entertainment district if built out but I guess different owners so maybe there was some pushback on developing additional entertainment

Pablo 06-21-2024 11:39 AM

Maybe just maybe you don’t need an entertainment district John. Just be happy with a shiny new stadium cocksmith

suzzer99 06-21-2024 11:45 AM

How about a stadium half in KS and half in MO? That would be pretty damn unique. Have State Line go right down the center of the field from home plate to second base to the outfield.

Yeah I was looking at the map and walking from P&L to EV is .6 miles and .5 miles to the Crossroad stadium.

No need for an entertainment district in the EV IMHO

Even the crossroads plan was going to throw up some unnecessary hotel/conference center bullshit so John could make a little extra leaching off the taxpayers. Always an extra grift baked in

American Royal Dr to Caesar Chaves Ave then East to the SW Blvd I-35 interchange will get you the hell outa there.

The Kansas politician this morning on Jason Anderson's show let slip that Downtown Overland Park, like that 80th and Metcalf area submitted a proposal for Royals and my brain instantly thought of turning that area into a Wrigleyville of sorts and that sounds incredible.

KCUnited 06-21-2024 01:14 PM

At least half of Wrigley's attendance arrives by train and the north side of Chicago is still gridlock on games days

Thinking about running literally anywhere, checks Cubs schedule for home or away game first

Home valuations and flipping your driveway for parking would be nice perks though

That sounds pretty awful. That area, with little around it beyond local people and traffic, already gets pretty congested. I’d have no idea how that would possibly work.

They'd have to demolish a ton of property there surely? If they go to JoCo I'd expect they would go to one of the big developments with a ton of open land like Bluhawk or Lenexa City Center. Maybe the old Sprint Campus.

Kiimo 06-22-2024 09:48 AM

lol if you think downtown Overland Park would be congested I can't imagine College Blvd where the Sprint campus is. That's very close to where I grew up and it would completely wreck an already congested area

lewdog 06-22-2024 09:53 AM

I think my top 3 favorite parks that I have been to would be 1) Petco, 2) Camden and 3) Fenway.

On my list to get to is Oracle Park and PNC park as unique and beautiful.

If the EV had a congestion problem while be bordered on two sides by 71 and i-70 and a 10 minute walk to light rail then imagine the congestion concerns for downtown OP whose closest highway is over a mile.

Kansas, I would think. Unless they hit a home run into Missouri. Then they would owe a prorated chunk of that game check to MO.

Katipan 06-24-2024 12:47 PM

Is the homerun hit at the plate?
Or is it only a homerun once it flies over the fence?

Imagining that the Chargers don't have talent and that that talent isn't going to be utilized by John Harbaugh is kind of silly.

They had a fake coach a fake coordinator and a hurt QB last season.

I really don't understand how pointing out sports owners are billionaire changes the situation. Do you guys create and watch your own produced puppet shows to avoid giving the Hollywood billionaires any money? Do you just starve to avoid giving the farming billionaires money or raise your own food out back?

If you don't want to pay the tax, fine, but I don't see how Clark being a billionaire is that big of a point.

Goodness you are miserable. Do you ever think or post anything positive?

Stadiums keep teams in an area and sports teams are a source of civic pride. That’s why when they win a championship you see huge parades. Fans cheer them on and celebrate despite them being owned by billionaires and residents paying to help fund stadiums.

Because billions = can pay for it himself.

Didn't finish the math because I was done with the shitter, but when I likened the loan Verizon took out to acquire Vodafone to the hypothetical deal Clark would have to make in order to finance a stadium himself, it wasn't anywhere near the amount needed to build a "sufficient" stadium.

I think the "civic pride" is kinda overlooked when the city infrastructure is falling apart?

Kiimo 07-11-2024 08:21 AM

I don't think Missouri should have voted yes for all the reasons stated. But I also don't think grown adults should act like babies about having to go to Kansas to watch a game. It's five minutes over state line and people in here holding a grudge from the Civil War.

It's one thing to joke about Missouri / Kansas rivalry. It's quite another to be actually furious about driving across state line to watch the Chiefs which thankfully aren't moving to San Antonio or something. Fix your infrastructure then. Sounds great. Fix your potholes. Get Missouri fixed. At the same time don't bitch about getting a freaking dome in the city done while still not screwing up Missouri taxes even more. What a bunch of childish nonsense.

You don't have to pay a dime, get a new stadium anyway. Seems win win to me but I grew up in Kansas not some Raytown shithole that I'm all defensive about I guess?

Voting yes or no on continuing the 3/8 cent sales tax does nothing to improve infrastructure. The report that shows a 3 million deficit is for sure not 100% accurate. It’s easy to calculate what the county gave in taxes to the stadiums, but figuring the revenue brought in isn’t as easy. There’s no way to accurately state what was spent on gas, food, hotels, merchandise, etc…on game days/weekends that wouldn’t have been spent without the teams playing.

While there's truth there, the reality is that no one has leverage on the NFL. They are more powerful than ever, and a lot of that is due to the Chiefs funny enough. The idea that Frank White or anyone has leverage over any NFL team just isn't true, and it's going to be especially true with the Chiefs. The NFL just had it's best year ever, ratings are through the roof and the salary cap went up way more than expected because last year went so well. It'd be a huge thing to have any NFL team, but the Chiefs are the back to back champs, they're basically on national TV 12-13 times a year, Mahomes is one of the most famous athletes in America, Taylor Swift is putting Chiefs references in her concerts all over the world.

Clark Hunt can basically do whatever he wants. There might not be an American sports team with more power right now. And that's what everyone who grew up a Chiefs fan always dreamed of. But that comes with a price. That's the other reality is if they leave I'd put pretty good odds Jackson County will pass some other kind of tax to make up for the lost revenue. It's not just the travel and all that but they'll lose all the game check taxes to Kansas as well. Not that it'll cripple the county but all this talk about what the county needs and it's all true, but letting these teams walk will still create a tax hit, on top of the counties probably having to eat knocking down the sports complex because they own the stadiums.

It really comes down to if you don't want teams to have this kind of power, don't watch the NFL. Don't be posting on an NFL team's message board. You have to walk away because you've given them a lot of power.

Oh for sure.

They've got the leverage, which is why this is happening now. If the county wants them to foot the bill or leave, so be it and I really understand the reasoning.

But it'll have some consequences

But a lot of areas have needed revitalization for quite a while. It’s not like this happened overnight. It’s been a slow rot and it was neglected until politicians want to suddenly make it a talking point. If the current 3/8 cent tax would actually go for infrastructure, that would be one thing. I highly doubt that it will though.

Stadiums keep teams in an area and sports teams are a source of civic pride. That’s why when they win a championship you see huge parades. Fans cheer them on and celebrate despite them being owned by billionaires and residents paying to help fund stadiums.

When the chiefs are losing does the city get its money back?

What about residents who don't enjoy the chiefs or sports? Why do they have to pay? Why do adults of the future who aren't even born yet have to pay for the stadium?

A ticket is a personal choice on where my money is spent. A stadium tax is extorting money from an entire population whether they enjoy sports or not.

Do the Chiefs own the stadium? Nope, the city/county does. They can absolutely do whatever they want with the stadium the 355/356 days a year that the Chiefs are not playing there.

I won’t say things that gets this pushed to DC but there are plenty of things taxpayers have to pay for even if they don’t enjoy what their taxes fund.

Lastly it’s not even a new tax but one that is already in place. It would have just been an extension of that. How many people have noticed that difference week in and week out over the years? How many will see any difference if it goes away?

People tend to take pride in where they are from/currently live and having sports teams contributes to that. This is especially true of places that aren’t populated by transients whose loyalty is elsewhere.

Are you trying to minimize taxation arguments? Lol, it's like you don't even know the history of our country.

I wonder how many of you all vote to end entitlement benefits that people have earned and need while at the same time are upset about people not wanting to give a billionaire money for a game.

You are incorrect. The stadium tax extension would not have paid for the royals downtown stadium. If the extension passed the royals would have put their hands into our money a second time.

There are also residents that don't take pride in having a sports team. There are even.... gasp.. cities without pro teams that still have a lot of pride. Can you even imagine?

Maybe KC just isn't able to afford the luxury of supporting two sports teams anymore? Maybe this is better left to cities with better public transportation and more tourism dollars because of mountains or oceans or massive casinos? Why would someone from out of state choose KC over Vegas, Colorado, or the Pacific ocean? So they can eat BBQ in an airport and a 45 minute drive in a rental car? Have you seen the cost of our above average hotels lately? The prices are not that far off from some hotel rooms in Manhattan NY.

****ing reerun Vonbobo acting like Frank White is looking out for anyone but Frank is hilarious. ****ing chode.

Franks motive to being the guy that lost the teams is just self service? That's some rage hate logic for ya.

What's the real reason you hate frank. I bet you can't admit it here.

1. I agree that there are residents who don’t like or take pride in sports teams. But based on the turnouts for three SB parades and a WS parade, it’s clear that many do care.

2. Gasp there are cities without a pro team and many of them trip over themselves to get one. Perhaps they could be proud of their town while also having a pro team on the national stage that represents them. Why else would they push so hard for a pro team?

3. Perhaps KC and Jackson County proper can’t afford two teams, I don’t know. But the metro area (to include Kansas) easily can.

4. How does the areas you mentioned figure into a sports team?

I pray for you as you genuinely seem bitter and angry. Simply put the tax would have been a continuation of what was already in place, not a new tax.

It’s fascinating watching vonBobo lash out and go through this crisis as he processes the widening gap from his complete certainty the teams weren’t leaving to the distinct possibility they are both gone.

Kiimo 07-11-2024 08:05 PM

Everything he's complaining about is pretty valid but there are more options between giving billionaires a handout against taxpayers' will and a team leaving your city.

Enter STAR bonds

The NFL has been loud and proud about extorting cities and leaving to the highest bidder for many many many years. They have never been bluffing. Chargers, Rams, Raiders, Raiders, Raiders, Cardinals, Oilers.. hell even the Chiefs aren't from here. What a huge middle finger it would be if the chiefs went back home to Texas lol.

I think I combined you and Jettio, who has been far more insistent that the Clarks want to stay at Arrowhead and wouldn’t ever leave.

If only for one night people need to be reminded we're all on the same side. Sports can at least temporarily place us in that space, and for many years, at minimum allow is to grieve together.

We finally have a reason to celebrate and people can't wait to piss on the next guy's leg. Shake it off...

Chiefs give themselves 6 months to decide their future residence.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/564...-ends-in-2030/

The article is from The Athletic but here are the first 2 paragraphs:

“ Even before the Kansas City Chiefs held their first full-team practice at training camp for their 2024 campaign, the team has put a self-imposed deadline on deciding the future of its home venue beyond the 2030 season.

Team president Mark Donovan acknowledged in a news conference Friday that the franchise plans to decide in six months on a stadium and which side of the state line, Missouri or Kansas, it will play its home games in.”

Sounds like they’re committed to the KC area at least.

wazu 07-20-2024 12:44 PM

So their decision is between Kansas at the Legends and...what? Is anybody else even working on something?

Kiimo 07-20-2024 12:46 PM

Yeah, that sounds like optics for just saying we are totally taking the Kansas deal and we’re giving Missouri a little bit of time to come up with some kind of plan at least to save face. Like what do they have to even choose from there is one proposal

frozenchief 07-20-2024 12:51 PM

One option is to stay at Arrowhead and they discuss that option. My points were that we should have a Decision within a few months and they seem to be committed to staying in the KC area.

So they would stay at Arrowhead and just live there without any renovation funds of any kind, then? Essentially no new deal has been or will be proposed from the Missouri side?

Sassy Squatch 07-20-2024 01:11 PM

Weren't they working on a proposal that would've essentially gave the Chiefs their half of the tax? 3/16ths IIRC.

Chargers are a poverty franchise and still can manage to get this.

Not a good look for our players who want a helmet pizza oven. Where's MY pizza oven??

Obligatory:

The Hunts aren't stupid. They aren't going to throw a bunch of money into a facility until the "Where" part is figure out. In 6 months when they have that figured out. I'm guessing the practice facility/campus will start right away.

Bowser 07-20-2024 01:30 PM

I'm sure it doesn't sit well with the Clarks when he sees what the Raiders and Chargers are working with while his team that is coming off of back-to-back championships can't get the ****ing air conditioning working in their practice facility.

Jackson County and/or the state of Missouri is going to dick this up and lose the Chiefs to Kansas, aren't they? I can just feel it looming on the horizon.

Of course they are. Missouri never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

Meh, it's not like one MO county can compete with an entire state; so Missouri (the state) might have very well lost the teams to the State of Kansas because of their arrogance of/for the eastern side of the state. Sadly both states' capitols don't worry too much about their western areas/counties.

Meh, I'd rather see the Kansans strapped with the bill, I don't mind the occasional extra few minutes drive. But Missouri will never learn...

KCUnited 07-20-2024 04:31 PM

KS foots the bill and KCMO gets better roads and stuff with the savings

win/win

Maybe. And if so, IMO, that's terrible. And even though it'll just be a short drive across the state line, it won't be the same. A part of KC Missouri, that galvanized generations, will be gone forever.
