You see it a lot with teams that don't like to get fouled. They get frustrated with all the contact and start going down for anything to try to get the ref involved. Players with cards play different than players without. Same principle as trying to draw fouls in basketball, although slightly more slimy.

It's much, much worse because we have to wait 4 years now. At least I'll be watching Euro 2012 in person. /sigh

I should get a European satellite dish.

There were non-calls for both sides. It was a terrible game to watch.

Only one team was consistently putting cleat into ankle, shin, knee ligaments and chests, and that team was the Dutch.

This.

Yeah, the tenor of the game started with the way that the Netherlands were playing. I don't like all the diving one bit, but you could tell how frustrated the Spanish players were.

This is very true.

WoodDraw 07-11-2010 06:30 PM

Also, I think people simplify diving quite a bit. Most of the contact comes at the feet, and you're typically running and cutting directions, so it's not like someone kicking your heal or slide tackling won't throw off your balance. Whereas we would do everything possible to regain balance, a lot of soccer players just fall down. If you get a foul, great. If not, you've lost the ball already anyway.

Now the diving without contact and pretending to have life threatening injuries stuff is separate and complete bullshit.

He, unfortunately choked. He should have put that goal away & the Dutch would be world champions.

Param 07-11-2010 07:11 PM

See some of ya'll in 4 years... I guess it's time to let this thread come to a rest.

I was rooting for the Dutch to win but as the game progressed I was getting sick and tied of their horse shit. Congrats to Spain they were the best team and deserved to win that game.

good cup overall

Gracias Estados Unidos!

It happened back when the Honduras was going through all of their political problems, so it was a big deal for them. With that US goal, the standings went from:

1. Mexico
2. USA
3. Costa Rica

to

1. USA
2. Mexico
3. Honduras

Anyway, that's what international football is all about. There's really nothing else like it in the world. Youtube some celebration videos after that game, and you can see what it means to countries just to make it.

And with that, so long South Africa. A job well done, by all accounts. Cheers to you - much better than I expected. And congrats to Spain, a well deserved champion of the world. What do ya say we do it all again in four years?

Back to the FIFA thread. The transfer silly season starts in force tomorrow.

What a weekend. What a month of soccer. What a long four years it's going to be. I'm happy that Spain won. They did not play the prettiest soccer and I really am not fond of the low scoring soccer that they played to win but they played some exciting games and were clutch when it mattered most.

It was just a wonderful tournament. Kudos to the host country for being such gracious hosts. Except for the Suarez booing, that is.
