Mariners firing their manager. Guess it makes sense considering their implosion.

Relative to the backend of our bullpen, he may as well be Dennis Eckersley. Although Neris hasn't been lights out by any means, his release by the Cubs was while he occupied their closer role and was solely for financial reasons. Neris would have had some options vest potentially, based on his season totals as a Cub. After his release, he was a a cheap, no strings attached flier easily worthy of supplanting one of our relievers. He'll work towards setting up Josh Hader, though I would have preferred him looking to claim that role in support of Lucas Erceg instead.

Yup. Scott Servais out, and another former catcher, Dan Wilson getting the job.

In other news, Judge just hit his 48th homer. Insane. Yankees are up on Cleveland 1-0 in the 4th.

Kinda omitted the whole Hunter Harvey thing, didn't he? But nevertheless, so far, the deadline deals have been terrific. Erceg absolutely looks like a keeper. Hopefully they can get Hunter right and healthy so he can positively contribute this year and next. And I'm sure if Lorenzon and DeJong continue to play well, they'll get a good look this Winter.

Here’s a great Athletic article about it:

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/571...shared_article

Quote:

A car pulled up in front of the Lard home on Thursday evening in Kansas City, Kan., and a big man stepped out. He wore white sneakers, a brown long-sleeve shirt and a familiar smile on his face. As he stood near the curb, he asked the group of boys in the yard if he could join their Wiffle Ball game.

At first, Cameron Lard, age 9, and his friends were a little confused.

“For a minute, they were all just kind of like: ‘What?’” recalled Lesley Lard, Cameron’s mother. “Why does this guy want to play?”

But one moment later, Cameron, wearing a blue Royals jersey, realized who it was.

“It’s Salvy!” Cameron screamed.

“All the boys went nuts,” Lesley Lard said.

Salvy, in this case, was Salvador Pérez, the All-Star catcher of the Kansas City Royals. He had the day off on Thursday, one day after the surprising Royals improved to 71-56 on the season, and he happened to be paying a visit to a friend in the neighborhood, a middle class pocket of the Kansas City area. According to Leslie Lard, Perez had visited the subdivision during an off day last summer, which created a minor buzz among neighbors. But this time, he saw the game happening outside the Lard home and, like Willie Mays in Harlem in the 1950s, he wanted in.

“My backyard is where the boys play every day,” Lesley said, “and he drove by and pulled over and got out of the car and said: ‘Hey guys, can I join?’”

Perez began by taking his place on defense. Soon enough, Cameron was running inside to alert his parents. When it was Perez’s turn to bat, Lesley’s husband Terry pulled out his phone and started filming. The boys started moving back — way back — all the way across the street. Perez started to laugh.

“Everybody was trying to play it cool, I guess,” Lesley said. “We wanted them to play.”

The outdoor baseball game at the Lard house is actually a neighborhood staple. On Thursday, it featured kids from third grade all the way up to high school, and at this point, the areas around home plate and the mound are just patches of dirt. Lesley, a local librarian, estimated that she’s spent “hundreds of dollars” on Wiffle Balls, which always seem to end up in the gutter or storm drain. Once, she said, a neighbor remarked that they didn’t realize kids did stuff like this anymore.

“But that’s what they do,” he said.

The family’s love of baseball stemmed from Lesley’s father, Tim Rauter, who was a devoted Royals fan. When the team made the World Series in 2014 for the first time in 29 years, Lesley was pregnant with Cameron, her only child.

“I told him: ‘Technically, he’s been to a World Series game,’” Lesley said.

Cameron came of age during another fallow period for baseball in Kansas City, when the franchise slipped back to the bottom of the standings. But the one constant was Perez, the 34-year-old from Venezuela who was the World Series MVP in 2015 and charmed the city with his youthful exuberance. Lesley’s father passed away three years ago, but the Royals have offered a pleasant surprise in 2024: Behind Perez and ascending superstar Bobby Witt Jr., the club is in position to make the playoffs for the first time in nine years.

“I was just hoping they’d do this when he was still young,” Lesley said, “to experience what it’s like to have a really good baseball team.”

With the way the Royals have played recently, taking over an AL Wild Card spot since the All-Star break, Lesley Lard says she’s been dreaming of taking her son to a postseason game at Kauffman Stadium. On Thursday, the superstar catcher came to them. Perez stuck around for more than 20 minutes, enough time to take some hacks, pose for photos, and for some of the kids to call their parents. One of the boys, Lesley said, bragged to his mom about “an epic fist bump.” And then, with a game against the Phillies on tap for Friday, Perez got back in his car and drove away.

“The fact that he did that might not be a big deal to him,” Lesley said. “But those boys are going to have that the rest of their lives.”

Sort by year.

ONE GAME OUT OF FIRST!!!111oneoneone

tredadda 08-23-2024 09:06 PM

Who would have thunk that on 23 Aug 2024 the Royals would:

1. Be 16 games over .500
2. Be one game out of 1st in the AL Central
3. Be four games back of the best record in baseball
4. Have the second best run differential in baseball
5. Scored the 6th most runs in baseball
6. Given up the 5th fewest runs in baseball

Just a stunning year they are having regardless of how it ends up.

It's even more remarkable when you consider that the Royals lost 106 games a year ago.

A major turn of events.

Now let's just include highest single season fWAR since the expansion era began around 1959-1960. We will take out all of the really old time players that didn't have near the competition of today. Where does an 11.4 fWAR rank Bobby Witt Jr in the last 65 years of baseball?

2002 - Barry Bonds 12.7 WAR
2001 - Barry Bonds 12.5 WAR
2004 - Barry Bonds 11.9 WAR
1999 - Pedro Martinez 11.6 WAR
1967 - Carl Yastrzemski 11.1 WAR
2022 - Aaron Judge 11.1 WAR

An 11.4 fWAR puts Bobby at 4th highest since the expansion era. Bobby is gonna have a top 20 season in baseball history and will probably not win the league MVP.

And yet Judge is gonna win MVP because he plays in Yankee stadium

Hard to say Judge doesn't deserve it if the Yankees win their division. BWJ needs to keep it up and the Royals to win their division to have a chance. The amazing thing about Judge is hes like 285 lbs roaming around the CF and he's not even bad at it.

This is a turn around the MLB has almost never seen. To go from 106 losses to potentially winning the division and having a chance to even have the best record in the AL. I mean just an unreal turn around.

Alot of credit has to be given to them for how they bullt their SP (obviously).Everyone they signed or traded for turned to gold. It was easy to see Ragans would be good but the stars aligning for Lugo, Wacha and Singer bouncing back. Even Marsh was good for a while and Lorenzen has been very good and hes a 5th starter. Im so giddy.

I went from:

“Can you keep me interested until the Chiefs start camp?”

To

“Can you keep me interested until the first preseason game?”

To

“Can you keep me interested to the first regular season game?”

To

“Can…you win the Central?”

I hope this keeps going. The next few questions are a lot more fun.

I love Denny and I'll share a couple quick stories. In the late 1980s I went into my local grocery store that was open 24 hours. It was around midnight. When I went to the checkout lane, there was a guy waiting in front of me wearing a Chicago Blackhawks Hockey Jacket. I said "Hey man, that's a really cool jacket. Are you from Chicago?" Guy turned around and it was Denny. My eyes lit up because I recognized him. Before I could say "Holy Shit YOU'RE DENNY MATTHEWS" he put his index finder in front of his lip to shush me. He said in a real hushed tone "Thanks. I'm a big hockey fan. I like baseball better, but really like the Blackhawks." I just smiled and nodded. He didn't want anybody to make a fuss over him in the grocery store.

In 2015 at the world series parade, I was in the front row with my friend Gary and Derrek. Derrek passed away in 2016, and we three guys were the three muskateers of going to Royals games. We went to games as friends since 1974; went to the parade together in 1985 and again in 2015. Derrek detested Denny for some reason. Said he was just a stat regurgitator; had no real personality like Harry Caray or Bob Ueker, and was in the Baseball HOF for "perfect attendance." We argued about Denny for years and years. So I tell you this because, during the parade, a truck comes rolling down with a bunch of the Royals employees, and walking along side is Ryan Levebre and Denny. I'm yelling at Denny and waving at him. He comes right over to us, and makes a beeline to the first person in our group -Derrek- Denny sticks out his hand and says to Derrek -thanks for coming out, you fans are the greatest- something like that. Denny shook his hand and Derrek was speechless. Gary and I just laughed and laughed. One of my favorite memories of the parade.

Yep, grew up listening to him every day during the summers on the radio. He may be terrible at it now but it takes me back to a better, more simple time when I hear his voice.

The thing about Denny that people underrate even now is he's very smart and has a good feel for the game. He'll never get credit for that because he's not someone who gets super excited. There have been times even this year where he'll pick up that the momentum has shifted, or you shouldn't have walked that guy, this batter is going to be trouble, etc. and you're kind of like "okay whatever" but sure enough he'll be right and either the Royals will come back or they'll blow the game. That kind of thing.

Add in Whit being a Super Star already and Vinnie/Salvy hitting more respectfully than everyone thought they could....it's quite remarkable how above the roster talent they are playing.

His call of Holland striking out Trout to end the ALDS is both underrated and deserves to be up there with one of the greatest calls in Royals history. The dude predicted the pitch and elevated an already iconic moment in the franchise.

It's always funny when CP and Twitter are going nuts about something and Denny says the opposite on the radio - and it always turns out what Denny says.

Thanks for sharing your stories. He may not have the same pizazz as Uecker, but anyone who doesn’t appreciate Denny is clueless. Being able to listen to any game & broadcast with MLB.TV makes me appreciate what the Royals have even more. There are several MLB broadcasters out there who make the games unwatchable.

Yup. For life long fans who lived in and around KC growing up he was a familiar voice every summer calling games. Thinking about it brings me back to when I was a child and I would listen to him on the radio.

The standings are obviously just for the hell of it, and skewed by the vast differences in GDT started by frequent and not-as-frequent posters. Nevertheless, they are weighted first by Games Back (0.5 games each per advantage in the Win and Loss columns) rather than Winning Percentage (just as with MLB standings).

Just like the Royals themselves, GabyKeepsMeWarm and cmh6476 started out especially hot, but have racked up mostly Ls lately.

cmh6476 SURGING up the standings!

He’s not the same broadcaster as he was in the 70’s. He and Fred White were a great team. And as the Royals began to show they were becoming a contender, they got extremely excited on their calls.

Frequently I heard

“Hit like a bullet down the left field line”.

“Otis drills a shot into the right center gap, and with his speed that could be 3 bases”!!

And all those times a ball got laced down the line and some opposing RF (Yaz, Steve Kemp, Roy White) would wait for the bounce only to have the ball hug the bottom of the wall and roll toward RC field, they went crazy on those plays.,

Awesome story GB but I will have to side with your late friend Derrek on this one. I never could bond with Denny. It was Buddy all the way for me. I still hear Blattner's voice to this day.

I watched the 85 Parade from the 24th floor of the Town Pavilion. Dangling my feet over the steel, the best seat in the house. JE Dunn wanted me up there to push the plumb line up the steel skeleton. Later figured out The Super just wanted us all to have the best vantage point in the city. No work was able be done with the crowds along the sidewalks where control points existed.

CatinKS 08-25-2024 04:18 PM

Will Smith needs to find his locker empty. Zack Greinke get off the couch, Mom can drive the kids to school. He was effective in my mind early in games as a starter last year. If he'll accept a relief pitcher role come back.

Also why has Blanco tried to steal third with 2 outs twice this season, with THE BOBBY WITT JR at the plate. First time a coaching moment, second time my baseball cleats up your rear end.

Heard this on the radio this morning but MJ's slash line in August is .339/.381/.661/1.042. He's becoming a lot better in the outfield as well. Hope he can maintain that through the rest of the season.

Spencer Nivens makes Baseball America's top 20 hot prospect list.

3. Spencer Nivens, OF, Royals

Team: High-A Quad Cities (Midwest)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: .571/.667/1.333 (12-for-21) 8 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 10 RBIs, 6 BB, 3 SO, 1 SB.

The Scoop: On Aug. 1, Nivens was hitting .184/.287/.296, with six home runs all season and few bright spots. Thankfully for Nivens, his season didn’t end at the start of August. Since then, he’s been the best slugger in the minor leagues. He has 11 home runs this month, raising his OPS nearly 200 points, and he’s hitting .356/.430/.839 in August. Nivens does plenty of damage when he makes contact, but until this month, he wasn’t making enough consistent contact. A great month doesn’t erase what happened in the previous four months, but it does give Nivens an excellent endpoint to try to build on in 2025. (JC)

Ive been keeping tabs on him and was going to mention him soon after watching Caglianones box scores every day. In a league where offense just seems down across the board, hes really coming alive lately (Nivens). Only 22 as well.

MJ's still only 25. He's had a similar profile in some ways in that we expect him to be a guy who hits .250 and mashes homers. People forget Moose was basically our #9 hitter during the 14 WS run because he was just figuring it out.

A issue they have with the roster is that MJ is playing better but much of that is because they finally stopped playing him against lefties. And I’m fine with platooning him, but then you run into the issue of Isbel also being terrible against lefties. You can’t keep two “starting” outfielders who both can’t play against lefties. It’s kind of compounded because two of the guys we could really use to help the outfield in the next year or two are Cross and Cags, both lefties. Cross is pretty bad against them so far in his career. So they have some decision making to do around the roster in the off season which will be interesting to watch.

Hootie called his shot on Moose for the 15 season in a way that’s seldom been replicated on here, Fanduel, and online bb’s everywhere.
