Do they offer classes at the Y? My wife is the same way about working out. She was always a treadmill monkey because that's the only thing she felt confident in doing by herself. She felt awkward and weird when she tried to do weights by herself.

She finally started going to classes, though, and she's had huge gains since then. She also has met a lot of people in the classes and really is part of a fitness community. They all push each other to attend the class and socialize and such before and after the class.

Body Pump and Spin classes are both awesome.

Yes, exactly. If you go to that forum, it has a thread for the WotD. The second post has the workout scaled into 4 different categories (representing from beginner to expert). This allows entry level people to actually do crossfit, with the eventual goal of them being able to do the WotD as posted.

"Row faster, I hear banjo music." Oh, I love this site already, thank you!!! I want to build strength, I have a nine year old son who plays football, the little turd was finally able to lay on me and pin me while I was sitting on the floor resting after about 20 minutes of wrestling and being a tackling dummy. In my defense he is 4'10" 120lbs at nine, I need to get my hind end in gear and build some strength...lol

120 lbs at 9?

Uh I've always been a fat kid, but I was 120 when I was 13.

A workout buddy is what I need, I have thought about the classes, need to go!! I have the same issues as your wife, but I always do the bike and have yet to touch the weights.

Well, if I were closer, I would offer to work out with you. I take my daughter, but I have learned not to push her, and to let her do her thing.

If I were you, I would try to find a 'buddy' to workout with and go three times a week.

But, at the YMCA, they have a lot of resistance machines. So, you can work without a spotter. Plus, you aren't trying to get huge, I imagine. So, those would work okay for you, especially starting out.

At some point, it would be good to switch over to free weights because they help your stability, core strength and rand of motion.

I need to get my son going, I was planning on that this summer. Yep, to bad you are to far away!

I was 200lbs at 13. Red, pay attention, lest your son end up in the same boat. I peaked at 450lbs at the age of 30. Don't let that happen to him. Please.

Let's see this tubby kid. As a mother you can't really be objective. We'll tell you if your boy has a weight issue.

You don't want to kill your kid at the gym, but at least take him out for a walk 3 or 4 nights a week. Tell him it will make him better and stronger for football as well.

He plays hard every day, didn't use to always be that way. He is slimming down, he hasn't put back on any of the weight he lost during the last football season.

Cute kid!

He definitely looks bigger/pudgier in the picture on the floor than the one in his football uniform. That being said, one of my sons is the same way. He just has a different build, and his face, specifically, tends to make him look chubby because of the way it's structured.

He loves to eat, though, and he's not inclined toward being active (he has a genetic condition that has made him delayed in gross and fine motor skills). As such, we've got to stay on top of his diet and activity levels.

That kid is fat. No question.

No more McDonalds. No more soda.
