So.....would you guys give Clowney 3 years 40 mil at this point and consider the defense re built?

Clowney's primarily a SSDE. We just drafted one of those at #30.

I'd rather not take Karlaftis' snaps.

We need a RDE that's better than Clark.

Ingram can play both sides and makes more sense.

I dont' think Ingram is a LDE either though. It's more outside the box and yes I'd much prefer a speed guy opposite Karlaftis, but if you could put Clowney over there opposite him and just play with 4 guys that can slide around and play basically up and down the line, you could do damage.

I liked him too, think he has a shot. In terms of the state of the roster, I think there's a couple of ways to think about it - short and long-term, and then best and worst case scenarios. I think the absolute worst case scenario involves:

- DL remains awful. Karlaftis improves us against the run but doesn't develop into a decent pass rusher, Clark remains Clark, Saunders is injured and Nnadi is turd.
- Secondary struggles with a number of new players and moving parts. Reid is more like the Reid of last year than his rookie year. Cook is poor in coverage. McDuffie's length means he can't cover elite WRs with size. Williams and others never develop.
- Chenal never steps up and remains a limited run stuffer
- Offence falls back somewhat. Moore becomes a limited slot guy only. There are a lot of people struggling to pick up the playbook and lots of mediocrity.

The best case scenario looks something like.

- DL improves with Karlaftis immediately upgrading the unit and increasing QB pressure. Ingram comes back early for a full year and offers the same energy and production as last year (he WAS good). Nnadi at least gets back to some run-stuffing form.
- LB group improves with Chenal immediately murdering RBs and offering relentless blitz pressure. Gay takes a step forward in his coverage.
- Secondary is dramatically better. McDuffie is an immediate lockdown corner, Williams quickly becomes a competent CB and matches up against bigger WRs (f you Mike Williams). Reid returns to rookie form, Thornhill and Cook flourish. Overall Spags uses these versatile chess pieces effectively to create havoc.
- Moore thrives in the system quickly moving from reliable slot to genuine elite all-rounder. MVS and Juju combine with him to become a lethal three-way threat. Mecole is last year's playoff version. Hell, Ross makes the roster and balls out, who knows.

In terms of short and long-term, I think we've got to temper expectations early on. There's a LOT of new players and a lot of rookies. I'm expecting it to start rough and for the first half of the season to be a grind, with the hope that it begins to click later on and not too late.

THIS is an excellent assessment. The schedule is going to be a killer. The too late part could come sooner rather than later if the Chiefs trend more towards your worse case scenario.

I don't really care for the "rough start due to new faces". Teams turn over rosters every year. Sure, there may be a missed assignment or two, but similar to the "Reids offense is hard to learn" I think it's just an excuse.

I think it's more new, young faces. There's a lot of rookies we probably need to step up fairly quickly. You can see what happens when a quality vet like Ingram comes in, he's good, instantly.

Rookies are going to make rookie mistakes. This group is touted as being pretty football savvy, so the hope is they'll learn quickly. I'd much rather see that than whiffed or half-ass tackles by vets.

On defense or O line I'd prefer to just put 'em in and let 'em play. This year will be the biggest infusion of talent since Herm's big draft so we might as well get it started so we can get there quicker.

It's not an excuse.
