I got it last night....good timing too with the massive flood here in C.R. Although I am already kicking myself for not having bought a huge expensive t.v.

ZootedGranny 06-13-2008 09:19 PM

I'm really digging the game so far, but I still have problems with some of the series' mainstays.

1. David Hayter's ridiculous voice reading for Snake. I'm sure it's by design, but the constant overdelivery of lines is comical by now.

2. The cutscenes. I don't have a problem with the content this time around, only the execution. Over the past couple of years, developers have found out ways to effectively deliver the narrative through gameplay, and while that's not Kojima's style, inserting twenty seconds of gameplay between five to ten minutes of cutscenes is not the way to go.

The worst offense so far was a two to three minute cutscene showing allies descending down an elevator shaft. You are then given control, which you use to simply walk a few steps into the shaft, which then triggers another cutscene that runs nearly 5 minutes. Give me a ****ing break Kojima. Either make it one cutscene, or allow me to play the game.

3. My last complaint isn't restricted to the MGS series, but since I was reminded of it: characters performing basic functions in cutscenes that the player himself cannot do. In normal gameplay, your movement is somewhat constrained, especially in regards to speed. In cutscenes, Snake is running like Jesse Owens. C'MON BRAH LEMME MOVE FASTER.

Still, complaints aside, I'm still really digging the game, even if it is a thinly veiled exercise in Kojima indulging in gun porn and expressing his worldly views.

So far so good. I really need to replay all of them again.

@ZootedGranny -

Do you disagree with Kojima's message?

ZootedGranny 06-14-2008 03:44 PM

Thinking about it, I don't have a problem with his message, but the melodramatic way in which he delivers it. He could use some lessons in brevity.

I am loving the game thus far, but just last night I fought Laughing Octopus, and the explanation for how the character came to be was some of the most comical ****ing nonsense I've ever heard.

I love the MGS series, the thing I have more than anything though, is the goddamned reeruned enemies with some sort of "power". The in game realism is great, the stories unbelievability is laughable. Also giant robots are gay, and they have been getting more and more stupid. Rex was believable, Ray was a little over the top, and the latest Mooing and excreting breed is the dumbest of all. Am I the only one who loves this game but HATES the majority of sci-fi / fantasy?

I just accept them as part of Metal Gear. Rex in the original was the best, so far. But then again, that was in 99. We should have the same reaction to that then as we do to these now.

It's comical in some ways but pretty interesting in others. It's comical that he came up with something like that but it's not comical a deeper level: war hurts.

And it just hit me, you mean the "her village story". Yes, that was unnecessary.

All MGS games are must buys.

irishjayhawk 06-15-2008 02:11 AM

Just passed Act 3. Holy fucking shit. Bad fucking ass.

ZootedGranny 06-15-2008 05:40 AM

Yeah, all story complaints aside, every single act has been better than the last, and it is constantly blowing my mind.

aturnis 06-15-2008 09:21 PM

Where is it that you can see what percentage of the game you have completed?

Or better yet, how many acts are there? and how long is each?

5 acts and they seemingly get longer as you go. THat said, I'm in 4 I think and it seems rather short as a whole. So far.....

After finally playing with the PS3 (after having a 360 for a long while) I have to say I like it better. I like their menu system rather than the blades. I like the graphics better (they ARE better). I like the quietness. I like pretty much everything over the 360 except for: Xbox LIVE and the actual hardware design of the system.
