I doubt very much that Hali would make it as an OLB. Nope. I just don't see it. As for Dorsey, he's a square peg in a round hole in the 3/4 system. I'm beginning to wonder if we're not looking at some kind of hybrid defense here. Something that allows us to use these players in rotation for now as we migrate our personnel and acquire players that actually fit the 3/4 (assuming, of course, that this whole 3/4 deal is not just more wild ass speculation by members of the media who are grasping at straws for grist).
As for DJ, I remain convinced that he's been coached down. I can't believe that, under the right circumstances, he wouldn't be an impact player. Keep in mind that, over the last several years, we've gone through (as of the last count) about 80 billion linebackers - some of whom have left the Chiefs to become contributors for other teams. I dont know how much of a pussy DJ is since he plays LB in the NFL, but it just seems to me he is better cut out to play ILB and cover the RB and TE's, especially if the OLB is knocking the TE off his route right at the line. He is also pretty quick, making him a good candidate to crash on the gap that a RB may be coming through. I know when we drafted him the knock was that he couldnt shed blocks, but he seems quite capable of that. I think he could also play the OLB position as well. He reminds me of a lesser talented Pat Willis (same size). Willis does have the mind set to crack skulls though, plus god like speed for a LB. |
290lb. would still be light. That's the issue. He wouldn't have to gain 8-10lb., it's more like 20-25lb., and even then he'd STILL be one of the lighter guys around. Aaron Smith is one of the lightest worthwhile 3-4 ends in the league and he goes 298lb., but he's 6'5" and is flanked by a 330lb. Pro Bowl-caliber nose guard.

I'll believe we're going to 3-4 when I see them line up in it, or at minimum start fielding some players that can do it. You need a huge anchor in the middle of this defense. I can see where our coaches might be looking and figure that our guys can't play 4-3 so why not try 3-4. I don't think many can play 3-4 either. Face it, we just don't have much talent in the front 7 right now. I think we're closer to having 4-3 talent. There we have to get a pass rushing end and hope that Hali does better back at his natural position, then find 2 linebackers. In a 3-4 we have to find at least two lineman including the all too rare anchor in the middle, and two linebackers. We're hoping in both circumstances that some of our recent picks show better. I don't think there's enough FAs out there to fill the holes we have.
