I wonder how this rates on the GM fail scale

I don't know ... Xanders is the GM. Elway is a VP of Football Operations.
I believe their goals are to put their team in a position to win more games than they lose, win the division, win in the playoffs and ultimately win a Super Bowl.
They finished 8-8 (7-4 after the QB change).. won the division and host the Steelers in the wildcard round. Their decisions and fate played out well for them. Very few people expected them to be here prior to week 1 and nobody imagined it was possible after the 1-4 start and change to Tebow.
The other job is to make sure the franchise is set up well to sustain positive momentum and improve each year. That remains to be seen, but after 1 year of Elway/Xanders/Fox ... it was a mix of highs and lows, culminating in an odd finish to 8-8 with a division title.
The goal of team management is not to play for a draft position with 11 games left in a season. It's not to try and lose to make sure they don't fall outside the reach of being able to draft a potential QBotF or any other player.
They're doing their jobs... it's not always pretty. I think they are as mixed on what is happening as most of the fans. Yes, it's great that they turned 1-4 around and are sitting here with at least one game still to play. We'll see how it goes.
I think that if you asked every member of the team - they would have mixed feelings on how they've played, but I will bet that 100% of them are excited to be here right now... in the playoffs.
