Luka by Suzanne Vega is the quintessential domestic abuse song, though I'm not sure if it's about women or children.

I know it but would have never thought of it. That's why I posted this thread. Kiddo likes old music and may like that one.

That's a great song but doesn't work because it's about child abuse rather than spousal. I thought about it already. Thank you though.

This is a tough one, I'm guilty of listening to a lot of music simply for the music. Meaning is mostly secondary.

Wait! Wait! I've got the perfect song!

"Somewhere That's Green", sung by Ellen Green in the movie "Little Shop of Horrors". It's got both themes where her boyfriend is beating her up ("I'm dating a semi-sadist, so I've got a black eye, and my arm's in a cast") and she's wishing she could go live with her true love Seymour "in a tract house that we share, somewhere that's green".

"Never Again" was the first song I suggested. She likes it but thinks her teacher may think it's too rough.

This assignment seems easy until you get deeper into it.

Nothing wrong with that. Music is meant to make you feel. For some that's a sound. For others lyrics are more important.
