I think this is exactly what they're going to do. Reid's traditional offense with less deep passing. Designed to get the ball out of Smith's hands quickly, a lot of touches to Charles and other backs (I still think passes > runs by 6-8/game, following Reid's career pattern; lots of passes to backs...). The downfield game's impacted partly because Smith's unable to go deep, partly because they don't really have a dependable deep threat even if he could (Avery's probably the closest). I think the tight ends will be favorable matchups in the intermediate game, as will Bowe. And I think we may see a lot of McCluster early on, then he'll get cycled out gradually.

Yeah, we don't have a deep threat really. What we have is big tight ends and big wide receivers who can exploit the one on one matchups, and they can't double cover everyone.

On coaching changes alone, we should see vast improvement in this team.

I still think the offensive line's a question, until it proves not to be one. Albert and Fisher should have the edges locked up, but I'm still not sure what we have on the interior. Which is I think part of the short/intermediate focus as well.

The Chiefs didn't really run a cookie-cutter offense last year, either.

It was unorthodox to the point of being ****tarded, imo.

So, if it is not like his other journeys on offense. Then it does sound cookie cutter.

Although, I'll wait til preseason and a game or two to make the call.

Handing off?

It certainly makes sense in terms of him getting rid of Mohningweg and going with fresh blood in Pederson, and bringing in two consultants on offense, if his plan is to tailor the offense more to the personnel he has so that he can hit the ground running. Time will tell though. I think at the end of the day it will still reflect the offensive style that Reid has always believed in, but he's a smart enough coach to where he understands the need to evolve as the game itself is evolving...

haven't they already talked about running a pistol/read option/west coast hybrid type offense?

Alex Smith cannot run a pistol/read option/west coast hybrid type offense because statistics show he could not walk, let alone run, the moment he came out of his mother's womb./Wendler

To some degree. Speculated at the very worst. Starting to come into focus the closer we get to camp.

I believe he already ran a read option offense in college and a west coast offense in the pros. The only new part is the pistol formation which should be a minimal change. Just changing the footwork and timing a bit.

Actually, the reason he couldn't do this, at least if he was running it like Kaepernick and Wilson, is that he can't take the extra contact. He's one of the most injury prone QBs in the league, and if he's carrying the ball on designed running plays 100 times a year he's going to get broken.

educated speculation

Reid ran a WC in philly
they brought in a zone read pistol formation specialist guy during the offseason
Alex smith ran zone read option offense in college
zone read option is the latest NFL fad
