Out out sight out of mind completely understandable.

It'd be nice if Austin atleast came out and said what it would take to get the search back.

Something to the effect of "dump everything and start over from scratch on a new forum platform" most likely.

(That's not the only option, but every option will take that level of work or more.)

They should technically be able to turn it back on, but it really is the main source of server glitches.

Yup. Basically we can upgrade VB software which will marginally help but is a metric ton of work or we can throw more hardware at it which is actually not a ton of work but is ridiculously expensive.

Maybe we could have a bake sale...or a car wash.

Or a bake wash!

I actually am looking at a few options now. One option would increase our HDD space 6 fold and our RAM 10 fold. I need to compare CPUs on that option but the RAM increase alone should make it worth doing.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks for chiming in, gentlemen... sounds like quite the big hairy deal.

But I bet you could count most everyone here, including me, in for atleast something if that's what it took, I cant be the only one that really misses search.

Would hardware even make that much of a difference at this point? Seems like the issue is more that the database doesn't scale well rather than our current server being old and shitty.

No handshakes or fist bumps.

Though I don't claim to be an expert on how most men do it, I would imagine that using the backs of one's hands would be difficult. Fist bumps should be reasonably safe.

I imagined it a messy process wrought with silken strands flailing all over the place.

Am I not nearly as worldly as I thought?

There certainly are some diminishing returns. Upgrading the software will let us move to InnoDB tables which would help but adding RAM would definitely make a huge difference as well. I'm talking about going from 12GB to 128GB.

Idealy , if we had a VB5 theme ready (the majority of the work is here) we could do the hardware and software migration simultaneously. Not much chance of that though.
