First time I knew Regis was in the late 60's Joey Bishop had a late night talk on ABC opposite Johnny Carson and Regis was his sidekick announcer. Joey was one of the Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack for those who don't know. I use to watch it sometimes, didn't pay much attention to Regis. Then I visited my parents when they retired in the 80's and every morning they had on the Regis and Kathy Lee show.

When I retired in 2005 we started watching Regis & Kathy Lee every morning, I guess we become our parents. After he left the show, I never watched it again. I even watched Regis when he did Who Wants to be a Millionaire. He was a likable guy and his wife Joy would fill in for Kathy Lee sometimes and I could never believe how old she really was, she was born in 1941, he did good.

Do you really not understand why LDT chose not to play this season?

I don't care.

Everyone has the right to decide what they do with their life. That's not the problem. It's the timing of his decision that bothers me. All i care about is that he made his decision right before the season started instead of before free agency started.

LMAO God damn... Letterman was great in his prime.

It's a wonder to me that people with such a gross inability to understand reality can function in society.

I know Regis was big on daytime TV, and had a huge hit with WWtbaM, but I never really got into either. And his showbiz career pre-WWtbaM and Live! w/ Regis& is a tad older than me.

Seems like a nice guy, but I think I've seen more of Dana Carvey impression of Regis than Regis himself.

EDIT - MoF, if I am recalling back that far correctly. I had to find out who Regis was after the first time I saw Dana do him on SNL.

RIP to a solid dude.

Must not have been a Letterman fan?

I liked what I saw of him in the late 80s, early 90s, but didn't see much because it was on so late.

Mostly I saw Letterman, before he moved to 10:30, on those annual prime-time specials, or 'best of' tapes.

Conan was about the first [and still nearly only, unless you count now where everything is on demand] time I caught any 'late late' programming.

Had a buddy in JHS/HS that raved about him, but I didn't have a TV. He liked him so much I think [IIRC] he even tried to pull off that suit with tennis shoes look at school

I think from 1982 until Letterman retired I have probably seen more Letterman shows than anyone. The very first in February '82 I caught by accident, I flew into Dallas to pick up my car and drive it back to Georgia (long story), when got there my former B-I-L flipped on TV and it was Bill Murray doing "Let's Get Physical" on the Letterman Show. I was hooked, and even though he was a liberal it was the best show ever. Chris Elliott, what more can I say.

Funny you say that, when Regis retired in 2011 from his Regis & then Kelly Rippa show they had guests hosts for several months trying to pick a new one. Dana filled in for one week and it was the funniest mornings I've seen on morning TV. I said to my wife, he would great, but he's probably too over-the-top for morning TV. I was right, they hired Strahan, never watched that show again.

It was funny watching Letterman make fun of Regis all those years.

Regis was a good sport about it.

Yeah, his original NBC show was on quite late, far later than I should have been up at that age. :)

That's when he was at his best though, so much was lost when he made the transition to CBS.

I stumbled on to it by accident in the mid 80s. I knew of the show and never paid much attention, but one night I was channel surfing, and happened to stop there because he was running stuff over with a steamroller. Watched it pretty much every night from there up until the early 2000s. No specific reason why I stopped other than he and his show had evolved to something I didn't really connect with anymore.

The 80's means you got there when Chris Elliott and Larry "Bud" Melman were doing their best bits. After he moved to CBS opposite Leno he was little different but still good. He had Hello Deli next door, the two Indian guys with the gift shop, sending in the rabbits to the Subway Sandwich, he had many bits that I never missed it, and the live bands were usually something different but good. Since he went off, I haven't watched any late night talk shows, don't even care for Conan anymore. I use watch him when he replaced Letterman. Those days are gone.

What's funny now is, when you see an old one from NBC and Leno was a guest. Hard to believe they were friends, and Leno was actually funny then.
