Only Jackie Robinson put up with more abuse than Hank did when he broke the record. He was a great player, steady and reliable, and a great man who didn't deserve to be put through the Hell he endured when the record closed in. Class man, and one of the games all time greats.

Absolutely. He was a slugger, but also a great hitter who didn’t strike out a lot for a power guy. Just a great pure all around hitter.

A true legend.

Heard he took the vax two weeks ago.....He was 86.....why? I'm sure it's not related to his death......right? Loved Hammerin Hank...

I was a Sr. In HS, 1975 4 buddies & myself was at that game. We wanted to see a part of history if Hank hit one, sure enough it was late in the game, a solo shot.

I'm too young to truly appreciate him but the way others talked about him, you had to respect his greatness. What a legend. RIP

I've argued for years he's actually underrated. People think of the home runs, but he was an all-around great player -- hit for average, had 3,700 hits, stole bases, was a good fielder in the prime of his career. He led the league in HRs only four times, but he was amazingly consistent and durable. Just a towering figure.

RIP to one of the greatest hitters to ever play. His overall stats are amazing and go well beyond just HRs. Still the all time leader in RBIs, total bases, and extra base hits. Plus he is third in hits and fourth in runs scored. He was a three time gold glover and 25 time all star. He was elected to the HOF with a 97.8% approval on the first ballot (not sure the reasons why he couldn't get the other 2.2%). He was truly a legend.

I am not one who usually sees race in things, but if not for race I wonder what would have caused some not to vote for him. His numbers easily justified it and being the all time HR leader would have been a shoo in, regardless of era.
