But..

Thats not going to happen. Frankly I'm a little bothered by it. I mean coaches with lesser resumes get jobs every year but whatever. It is what it is.

So put the shoe on the other foot. If you were AB, would you make a lateral move to be a OC with the Commanders or Titans which would allow you to step out of the shadow of Reid and Mahomes, or do you just say **** it and stay where you are and keep working with Mahomes and Reid. I mean there are worse jobs right?

I'm to the point now where I'm fine with him staying in KC. Give him a multi-year contract. Show the league we actually do want him. What's the down side? Nagy remains the QB coach? I think its time we step up and stand with EB.

What say you?

At this point I would move to a different team as OC where I had full control of what plays to call and the offensive scheme. If he is successful there someone will hire him.

There's a world of difference between thinking he CAN'T be a head coach and thinking he WON'T be a head coach.

Does EB have the football knowledge and skillset to be a head coach? Absolutely. Since you are asking if he deserves to be a head coach, I'm going to look at it through the viewpoint of an owner.

As owner, the only thing more important to me than winning football games is PR. Bad PR is not good for my team's image. So, while EB has the football knowledge I'm going to go ahead and look at his rap sheet and notice it includes legal issues against both a fire fighter and a female.

A decade ago, I may have overlooked those incidents. After all, who would notice something that happened so long ago? Now though, if I hire him as the head coach, I am one Brooke Pryor or Dana Wright editorial away from having to deal with a trending #MeToo issue that the media will never get over. Again, I don't like bad PR. So I'm going to take a look at the other candidate. Do they have a similar football knowledge and skillset to EB (the answer is yes)? I am hiring that guy every time.

People may not like it, but your past can stay with you FOREVER. EB is lucky, he still has earned millions and has a very good life. Not everyone gets the chances or reaches the success he already has.

If he's making $1M per year (NFL average) that's not a bad dead-end job. I'd only leave it if I felt like I was making a move with a decently high probability of success. Washington's QB room would disqualify them if it were me.

Thing is he’s capped here. How many teams are out there that have a good QB and offensive skill positions and no offensive minded HC? If he’s content being a career OC then staying in KC is not a bad gig. If he’s looking to be a HC he has to go someplace like Washington. Their QB situation isn’t ideal but they are not devoid of talent on the offense.

I just get the impression that Andy's not the type to have "lifetime" gigs on his coaching staff. He likes the churn and the influx of new talent.

Sure, EB would have an easy road with just staying here and staying put but I'm not at all convinced at this point that it's what the Chiefs and Andy Reid want.

Absolutely. Problem is EB is the coordinator no one wants. As such Andy is in a weird spot. Normally his coaches get hired elsewhere which allows him to bring in new talent. With EB, letting him walk without a job and especially after a dominating offensive performance in a SB is horrible PR. Keeping him prevents Andy from promoting someone else.

It was just a joke, apparently not a very good one. :)

I would bet Andy is just fine with Spags being in the lifetime DC role.

Buehler445 02-16-2023 03:02 PM

As long as Reid will have me I’d stay if the options are Tennessee (woof) and wash (where they fire coaches as the wind blows).

Hell didn’t Caldwell get a HC gif after being Manning’s “OC” (in name only) for 10+ years?

Yeah I’d stay.

Oh yeah, but that's a little different since Spags isn't an offensive coach.

As long as Snyder is the owner, going to Washington is a bad idea.

Going to be Bezos soon enough from the sounds of things.

IF EB really wanted to be a head coach...there are more leagues than just the NFL.
