Had mine in November last year. Found it kind of odd that the prep for people is so different. Brother & my dad had one and their prep was different from mine and different from each other.

Mine was the over the counter Miralax. Think the process was something like take a couple pills, then mix up half of the Miralax bottle and drink it in 10 minutes. Then an hour later mix up the other half and drink it. Taste didn't bother me much. Other than going to the bathroom every 10 minutes, the prep wasn't bad.

The actual colonoscopy was, I guess, a breeze. I remember getting into the room, the doctor going "Ok, roll on your side" and the next thing I knew I was waking up in the recovery room.

I built it up into my head as some huge ordeal and was nervous going in. It's not. It's easy.

The last one I had, the prep was horrible. I had to drink a gallon of this vile tasting shit. Half of it starting at 6 PM, the other half at 2 AM.

The prep stuff they make you drink is just strange. It's not horrible in a "this tastes like literal shit" way - it's kind of oddly sweet with some earthiness to it. But it definitely does somehow create a little gag reflex, and having to drink it over and over and over and over again builds up to the point that you almost puke it up by the end.

I get to do it for a second time in August (I'm only 41, but they found a couple of polyps the first time around, so I'm on the frequent flyer program). My pro tip is to buy a bidet attachment for your toilet if you don't have it already. It at least makes it more tolerable on the other end.

It tastes like 7-Up you would order off of wish.com

I've had one and there are worse things than that test, and mine is so nice they're asking if they can look again soon.

Back when old uncle Ernie was alive, his doctor set him up for one on a Friday. So, on Tuesday I brought the jug of prep home to him and told him it was for Thursday. Of course when I got home Wednesday afternoon, he had already drank it all and spent the afternoon shitting his guts out.

So I called my neighbor up the road, who was his doctor and he said feed him a decent supper then go back to the drugstore the next day and have him drink another gallon.

By the next night, he said he was as weak as a baby and his ass felt like a corncobbed cat.

Peter King wrote in his column a few years ago about how he started his colonoscopy prep before boarding a 3 hour flight… JFC that is crazy.

I heard Billay offers a colonoscopy prep service to help the procedure be a bit less of a struggle.

He did tell me the older you get the risks go down for colon cancer that is why they lowered the test age to 45. Thought that was interesting and hope he is not an idiot.

I was an Endoscopy RN for 4 years. 100% of what that MD said sounds wrong. Cologuard is an "ok" diagnostic tool, but it is not the gold standard by any means. There are false negatives a lot with that test. If you are 50+ you need a colonoscopy, end of sentence. If its clear then you don't have to get one for another 10 years (depending on family history.) As you age your risk goes up not down. Once you hit 85 you don't have to get them anymore because colon cancers grow very slowly, and the probability is you will pass away before a cancer would grow.

53 still have yet to have one. I have a friend that is a GI nurse, tells me what Dr to see. Every year at my annual regular Dr checkup, you know the one you have to have before they'll reup your meds, they ask. No I haven't I say, your office was supposed to set up the appointment. I never received a call.

Not sure who is ****ing up here, my my PCP or the GI office, but just stupid.

The best thing Peter King has ever written. LMAO

I was scheduled for a colonoscopy on Thursday at 1 p.m. in West Paterson, N.J. If you've had one, or if you’ve had any intestinal procedure, you know that the day before such an internal snaking you’ve got to be, well, cleaned out. One problem for me: On Wednesday, I was covering the Vince Young pro day workout at the University of Texas in Austin. I was supposed to begin colonoscopy prep at 1 p.m. Wednesday—when the pro day was in progress. My flight was due to leave Austin three hours later, and I was scheduled to get home by 8. In other words, I was not going to have the home-bathroom advantage for a good portion of the internal preparation.

Pretty tricky. I’ve had two prior colonoscopies (you should have these things fairly regularly after turning 40, and I’m 48) and know that once you begin your prep work, it's about a six-hour process. So I figure, OK, I'll start on the plane, then finish at home.

I took the first of the preparatory medication (and believe me, that's putting it very nicely) just before the three-plus-hour flight took off from Austin. I was in fine shape until maybe 40 minutes from landing in Newark, when the captain came over the intercom and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve been told by the tower in Newark that we’re going to have to slow things up a bit because of traffic into the New York area. They’re putting us into a holding pattern, and we’re going to head over to Pennsylvania to circle …”

My worst nightmare, coming true. It would get worse 10 minutes later, as we were banking bumpily somewhere over southeastern Pennsylvania. The flight attendant came on and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, because of the bumpy ride, we’re going to be turning on the fasten seat belt sign for the remainder of the flight ...”

AAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!

Deep breaths. Long, deep breaths. Bumping around for 45 minutes. An eternity. Hold on. Just hold on. You raised two kids not to be ax murderers, you can survive this. I may have to get up and brawl with this flight attendant in a minute because of the seat belt sign.

Out of the holding pattern. Seven or eight minutes later, like the God of Aviation knew what was happening inside me at that moment, the captain came on and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, we’re on our final approach into the Newark area.
Day of my wedding. Births of my children. Red Sox win the World Series. Landing in Newark.

Once off the plane, I was as dignified as was humanly possible. I brisk-walked to the men’s room, found a stall, and … well, the rest is colonoscopy history.

My brother did that Cologuard and got a positive result for cancer; which is what prompted him to go in for a colonoscopy that was negative.

Yup, sounds about right. Just not a very precise test.
