Do Big Bang Theory viewers really view this as some sort of smart, edgy show?

Pablo 10-26-2013 03:02 PM

Although I will say it's much, much better than Two Broke Girls. Whoever brought that show up deserves an eye-stabbing.

My wife watched TBBT and TBG regularly. I can at least tolerate listening to TBBT in the background. Two Broke Girls is an abortion having an abortion.

It is very popular among actual scientists.

Besides Ebolapox, here are a couple more examples:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...e-Bazinga.html

Brazilian biologist Andre Nemesio said he named the species of Brazilian orchid bee Euglossa bazinga in honor of 'the clever, funny, nerd character Sheldon Cooper,' because the bee had tricked scientists for some time with its similarity to other species.

...

According to the Smithsonian, Sheldon Cooper has also an asteroid named after him (246247 Sheldoncooper).

Holy shit! CBS' ratings juggernaut and they still need a shitload of Dyson product placement?

5 minutes in, and I scarcely stop pondering what an air multiplier is doing sitting on a credenza in the background at Sheldon and Leonard's, when Bernadette comes clomping in with uniball B-story?

Product placement seems to be a big money maker in TV these days. Earlier in the season on Hawaii Five-0 Danno's silver Camaro, which was always displayed prominently in the show, was burned by some bad guys and they made a big deal out of him getting a brand new black Camaro.

I've been noticing this kind of thing for a while now, I think we might as well get used to it. It does bug me when entire scenes are written into the show solely for that purpose, like Bernadette vacuuming.

since when does NEED ever mean anything when it comes to getting more money.

the more popular the show the more companies will pay for product placement.

Networks will never turn down more money.

I remember an episode of The Glades, which was sponsored by Kia, where they spent a whole scene discussing the features of his new Kia. It was so blatant it was ridiculous.

It takes about three episodes to appreciate it and the characters. I always passed it as dumb but it is now my favorite. But I got into late and had to watch it in syndication which only had about 35 episodes. Fantastic writers.

To my knowledge it is.

When they were launching it, the writers sought a grad student from Cal Tech to ensure the science was accurate. When they called CalTech physics department for a grad student, professor Saltzberg said he wanted to do it. So they went with him. All those equations on the white board are checked by him as well as various props and he also checks the script for science inaccuracies. To my knowledge, they've even had students from that dept in the audience at times. From what I've read the scientists at the school are fans of the show.

Actually it is all good...I enjoyed the growth of the characters over the years and the humor. I have all the seasons on DVD....bought them as a set at a Garage sale.

I will put it this way...I would much rather spend my time binge watching BBT than I would the wasted series that were Seinfeld and Friends

I will say Sheldon grows on you. Once you understand what and who he is. They never actually say he's autistic but he is very high functioning autistic in the show with a mix of savant syndrome. Obviously its grandiose for tv though.

Just a typical turn ur mind off and veg out Chuck Lorre production.

I did a ctrl-f for 'laugh' and sure enough 10 years ago people were complaining about the laugh track... it's obnoxious.

I've never started Big Bang from the beginning, but just seeing random episodes it seemed like it was just okay.... I just reached the end of Young Sheldon and found that show to be quite a bit funnier, but will probably give BBT a shot one day.

I'm quite sure BBT was filmed in front of a live audience. There's one really funny scene in particular, where Penny gives Sheldon a napkin autographed by Leonard Nimoy, that you can hear somebody in the audience with an obnoxious laugh so loud that it was distracting. No way that was part of a laugh track.

As for Young Sheldon, the commercials for it annoyed me enough that I've never watched a minute of it. That kid is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Of course, I'm a cranky old fart who's never had any kids, so pretty much all kids are like fingernails on a chalkboard.

displacedinMN 05-03-2024 09:29 PM

BBT is a great show. SMART people navigating life. Johnny Galikie's looks are amazing.

No one is without issues. Adding the girls added a better dimension. Raj should have tried harder with the redhead.

They do use a live audience. But they also edit the laugh track by adding and removing noise to fit their needs. Which results in a very overused canned format that is insanely annoying once you notice it. Lots of sitcoms do the same thing, but this show just hammered it mercilessly. You start to notice the actors stopping dialog for no other reason than totally pointless laughter.

I guess I never really thought about it, but that does make sense. I've seen those scenes on YouTube and it's definitely kind of jarring to hear them without the laughter.

Maybe it's because I'm used to it, or conditioned by decades of laugh tracks, but it just doesn't really bother me. I've seen clips from M*A*S*H that don't have the canned laughter, and they just seen wrong. I'm also not really a fan of modern comedies that don't have it.

First, I never shit on the show. I've said that some people love it. From my limited watching of it, I don't care for it.

Second, I just think it's funny that some think this show is any different than something like Seinfeld, or Friends, or How I Met Your Mother. This isn't some high brow comedy. It's your run of the mill network comedy.

This. Stated watching that show on a whim a few years back. It’s an amazing and hilarious show

One of my favorite episodes is The Gang desperately Tries to win an award for best bar. But the bar being a metaphor for their actual show. Their show has been on for like 16 seasons yet never won or even nominated for an award if I recall. They’re so confused why their “bar” hasn’t won any awards. There’s a great scene in that episode where to go to a bard Called Sudz, which is basically the bar equivalent of Friends or BBT. There’s even a bell that the bartender rings / goes off to tell everyone to drink. ( ala a laugh track). Such an awesome show.

DJ's left nut 05-07-2024 08:31 AM

I hate this show.

It's a 'smart' show for stupid people.

"Oh you just don't get it...."

Yeah, that's it. A show that supplanted 2 and a Half Men in mass market media consumption in this country is just too damn smart for me.

They make 'sciency' references as stand-alone attempts at humor that aren't actually clever and definitely aren't funny and in so doing get some sort of odd rep as being brilliant. Mentioning Schrodinger's Cat without any meaningful effort at a joke doesn't make anything intelligent. It's just a fly-by name drop of sorts.

You want clever and funny? Watch Silicon Valley. If you want stupid but funny, watch How I Met Your Mother and just skip the final 2 seasons.

Big Bang Theory is neither of those things.

Yup.

I can't even watch the re-runs. The ending was THAT bad.

How do you blow a landing so badly that you wipe out everything that happened before it? Even Seinfeld didn't do that.

It blows my mind how they thought that was a good idea. Like you, Hulu can keep 'em. Which is a shame because it really was a good show.

BBT was great. Young Sheldon was great, but for a completely different reason. In fact, the Young Sheldon bore little resemblance to the Old Sheldon, who always had memories of his alchoholic father and basically totally hick life growing up. Young Sheldon fleshes his childhood and family out to be much more likeable and real people.

But BBT was great. So was Friends. Sheesh, I don't know what there is to hate about the show, but everyone has their own taste I guess.

BBT, Friends, 2 and a Half Men is just low hanging fruit jokes. There is no complex humor attempts going on there. And that can be a good watch and relaxing.

I was never really a fan. The jokes were mostly just "What dumb people think smart nerdy people are like." And they ran that theme into the ground over and over for about 8 seasons too many. But mostly, I just can't stand the actor that plays Sheldon. That guy just is not funny. Hearing him boorishly state some random science fact which results in the audience to roaring in laughter is just nails on the chalkboard for me.

If the show had ended after 3 or 4 seasons the ending wouldn't have been that bad at that point.

After 10 seasons it became clear that Ted and Robin should not be together. I was so sick of ted pining over her. Their characters had grown so much since those first couple seasons that the ending was a slap in the face.

That is a cautionary of locking yourself into an ending and not allowing the story to change as the characters do.

So Young Sheldon is done. I thought they did a great job of wrapping things up. Hopefully Meemaw is still a big part of the Georgie Mandy spinoff. She was my favorite character on Young Sheldon.
