Shanahan could not be reached for comment and Chiefs had no comment.

No, see...that all changes now.

In five years you're going to be cursing Pat Bowlen while Mike Shanahan paws a red helmet next to the Lombardi and Dwayne Bowe talks about his MVP performance...

From Adam's wikipedia page:
"According to a USA Today survey of fans published January 19, 2009: "NFL Network's Adam Schefter edged ESPN's Chris Mortensen (34%-32%) for best [NFL] insider despite the NFL Network being in less than half as many U.S. households."

I wonder if he posted that there himself.

This entire theory is bogus.

If Shanny had to "pretend" to look for work, his boy Schefter wouldn't be saying "I'M TELLING YOU IT'LL NEVER HAPPEN, THEY HAVEN'T EVEN SPOKEN" at the top of his lungs.

Right, Harlan made it all up

DaneMcCloud 01-23-2009 07:01 PM

I think the Chiefs were about to negotiate with Shanahan (or had already started) and another interested party jumped in.

Hence going from "negotiating" to "targeting".

The Chiefs camp has been pretty good about keeping everything quiet so far, so I'd buy that.

ESPN news ticker now says that a chiefs are targeting shanahan, but a "team official tells chris mortensen he does not believe shanahan will be hired."

missinDThomas 01-23-2009 07:13 PM

I'll bet money it is Paul Pasqualoni. He is defense minded, experienced, and Parcell's boy.

Red Beans 01-23-2009 07:16 PM

Well if a decision isnt made in the next five days or so, it might be safe to assume Pioli is targeting a superbowl coach.

Mr. Flopnuts 01-23-2009 07:25 PM

Mortensen has come off his claim that this was a done deal. I saw him on NFLN saying not only a team official has told him it probably won't happen, but also that Clark Hunt will keep this under the vest and it will be a guessing game until it's done.

Maybe you should post this in another thread, tard.

I'll take your bet immediately.

There is no way Pioli is hiring a shitty college retread like Pasqualoni.

Is It Shanny?
January 23, 2009 - Bob Gretz |

You gotta love this.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Chiefs are in final stages of negotiations with former Denver head coach Mike Shanahan to replace Herm Edwards as head coach. Mortensen said Friday evening on Sports Center that the negotiations have started up between the team and Shanahan in the last 24 hours.

But ESPN.com’s story on the matter filed after the TV report puts a slightly different spin on the situation. The story has reporting from Mortensen, but was not written by him says:

“Once source claims there have been negotiations with Shanahan and that a deal was near but another said Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has targeted Shanahan without a clear-cut result.”

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network and a guy who jumped to the league outlet after covering the Broncos in Denver, reports that there have been no negotiations between Shanahan and the Chiefs.

Here’s what Schefter posted on NFL.com:

“Despite rampant reports that the Chiefs are negotiating with former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan to replace Herm Edwards, they are not, sources said Friday. The Chiefs never have made any contact with Shanahan — never. And there have been no contract negotiations.

“So unless people I have known for years are blatantly lying to me, Shanahan will not be the next coach of the Chiefs. It’s not happening. People can keep talking as if it is, but it’s not. Shanahan will not be the coach of the Chiefs in 2009.”

Shanahan spoke to former Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham from a golf course in Cabo San Lucas in Mexico on Thursday.

The Chiefs had nothing to say Friday afternoon on a replacement for Edwards.

So, this will be interesting to see which one of the big-time NFL information guys has it right, and which one has it wrong.

No.....Bowlen took care of that.

RedThat 01-23-2009 07:38 PM

Bill Cowher is NOT coaching the Chiefs. Unless the Chiefs can seemingly talk him out of retirement somehow, or someway convince him to coach here I don't see it as a possibility.

He already said himself he is not returning to the sidelines this year.

whoman69 01-23-2009 07:39 PM

So for weeks not even a rumor coming out. Now that Herm is fired the rumors come out of the woodworks. Pioli is a guy that keeps his cards close to his vest. Whatever the decision is, we won't know about it beforehand unless an agent for a prospective coach leaks the news.

Mr. Flopnuts 01-23-2009 07:40 PM

ESPN is serioulsy backing up right now. I still think this will happen, but all parties seem to be slowing down.

BigChiefFan 01-23-2009 07:42 PM

Just when I gave you credit for being cooler lately, you go and start a tantrum about Shanahan. Damnit, Taco.

Cowher's going to want in excess of $7 million per year. Probably more like $8 million.

"They are not near a deal. They are not near a deal right now, they were not near a deal yesterday, they will not be near a deal tomorrow. Mike Shanahan will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs," Schefter told 9NEWS. "All the people in Denver can stop worrying or stop talking about it, it's not happening. I know there have been national reports to the other effect. I'm here to tell you just the opposite, it's not going to happen."

Schefter says he has spoken with Shanahan directly about it.

"I speak to Mike regularly, there has been nothing in his tone or in his message that has given me any indication that he will be the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. I know for a fact they've not had contact to this point. The Chiefs may in fact reach out to him in the coming days and even then I firmly believe it will not change anything," Schefter said.

It's funny, he sounds very sure of it but the second paragraph sure sounds like he's basing a lot of this on gut instinct rather than actually hearing it from Rat...

I'd never forgive Bowlen if this happened.
