WTF would you try to take off the plane with the brakes on? If you did, you'd likely just cause damage to the plane.

The plane's propeller is not moving (so it has no forward thrust).

The treadmill begins to move in the direction opposite the plane's normal direction (forward).

In that scenario (and assuming a lack of friction), what would happen to the plane?

Nothing.

That's not the question. The question was would a plane take off on a treadmill, and the answer is yes.

A plane on a treadmill will only achieve flight if there is sufficient airflow over the wings to generate the requisite amount of lift. That can only be achieved by the wings moving through the air, or a sufficient gust of wind blowing over the wings (not normal).

Correct. So, now let's add thrust from the propeller into the mix. In the case of the second scenario, the aircraft actually gets some benefit from the forward motion of the treadmill. However, it is not enough to have the plane magically launch of the treadmill without sufficient ground speed.

Agree?

Dude. The thrust from the engines will create said airflow. REGARDLESS of what the wheels are doing.

I believe the original question prefaced it was a propeller plane. No Jet Engines.

The point being that the propeller creates airflow, not the engine, sorry.

Dont know if this even has anything to do with anything though. This question makes my head hurt. I want to agree with you, but I also dont.

Agree?

You're not explaining yourself well at all. All that is required for flight is for a sufficient amount of air to be moving over the control surfaces of the aircraft. Ground speed is irrelevant.

But how can there be airflow over the wings, if the airplane is not moving compared to the ground?

I've already stated that. Re-read. Anyway, we are discussing a plane on the ground, so barring a really big gust of wind, the ground speed is rather relevant.

It wouldn't. But theoretically if the air was moving across the control surfaces, as in a wind tunnel, flight would be achieved. The propeller alone would not supply enough air movement.

It's the same reason aircraft carriers turn into the wind to launch aircraft. Less relative speed of the aircraft is required in order to achieve lift.

I have a feeling you're arguing just to argue, as a result, I'm not going to argue anymore. You have never once stated how the treadmill will overcome the thrust of the engine. No matter what you say, the thrust will push the plane off of the treadmill and create groundspeed to create lift.

Where did I state that the propeller does not create thrust? Of course it does.

The question seems to be a scenario where the plane will, with zero ground speed, suddenly leap off the treadmill because of the treadmill happens to be moving underneath the plane. I'm stating that without a massive gust of wind, that is not going to happen. If the treadmill is long enough (and the plane generates sufficient ground speed/airflow over the wing, of course it is going to fly. That scenario isn't much different than a conventional take-off.

The whole thing was awesome. They built their own engine and it had an aluminum block. In 1903!! That engine drove two propellers, one spinning clockwise and the other counter clockwise so they didn't have to deal with torque.

So basically, those in the 'won't fly' camp read the conditions to require that the axle -->wheel -->airplance have no forward momentum, otherwise the treadmill isn't actually 'mirroring' the airplane's efforts. They aren't concerned with the practical side, where the jet engines will accelerate the wheel/treadmill apparatus to infinite speed [not fast, not really fast, but infinite, as in increasing exponentially without end], and the system fails.

So basically if I get my Deloran to 88 mph... you're saying I can go back and put swine flu in the 1997 Bronco's koolaid?
