Grew up in Independence, ate there once a week since my stepdad didn't like to cook, or spend money. Those long waffle-cut fries smothered in malt vinegar until they got soggy were the bomb.

Is the airport version the same? Seems like I saw one in a mall but the fries weren't like I remembered.

Hartsfield Airport has an Arthur Treachers.

Really? I haven't heard of them for decades. I've been to that airport a couple of times, too.

My Step dad lived in Quail Creek. Independence used to be off the curb, for a Kansas City type of suburb. Grandma live off of Seminole. We used to hit up the underwriters outlet and that badass movie place owned by that Italian, it was directly across from Tippins. We'd always get Cheech and Chong or Pure Horror Flicks. OH the days.

When I was a little kid my uncle lived in the Quail Creek apartments. I have no idea why I remember that.

Simply Red 05-02-2012 10:50 PM

and then there was 'In a Tub' Tacos off of Noland too. Which was weird because they gave you this awkward powdered cheddar cheese for your tacos. If nothing else Kansas City can eat really bad, but so so good. LOL

And yes I actually DID eat at Treachers, and yes the fries are the same, I remember not being crazy about the fish because it was so thick, I like several petite cuts versus a slab 'tuna-like' cutlet.

Is Dogpatch still there? We used to drive through that just for fun and to scare the crap out of ourselves.

I wasn't driving. :D

why? Do you not like LJS?

Gonzo 05-02-2012 11:19 PM

Lumpy and I went there for the first time in years to get a takeout order just a few days ago.
She was really cute, she put on the kids pirate hat and rang the mast bell on the way out.
I think she was trying to score free crab cakes.

Their hush puppies are little doughy balls of awesome.

Gonzo 05-02-2012 11:20 PM

Malt vinegar on the fish with a little tarter sauce is pretty ****ing good.

Demonpenz 05-02-2012 11:39 PM

I am obsessed with LJS I haven't had it since 2008 though. I would eat it as my final meal Fish/chicken planks, fries slaw and extra shrimp.

Fairplay 05-02-2012 11:42 PM

Last time i ate LJS was about 3 years ago. This guy in another department had it at work he said do you want some hush puppies. I ate a couple, just two.

Thirty minutes later i had to poop real bad, i always get that with them.

Now that you say that, yes of course. It's obvious that it's cornmeal.

Had a buddy in high school that worked at one and I could have sworn he told me they were made out of something that could basically be bought at a grocery store and fried. But thinking about it, he must have either been full of shit, or my memory is off.

Mmmm... crab cakes.....

This is Claude. Claude is a 15-pound Monster Tasmanian Crab recently caught off the shores of Tasmania that was on his way to an industrial-size steamer before being bought by a British Aquarium for £3,000 (~$4,800). Claude's shell is 15-inches across and it's estimated he's large enough to make 160 crabcakes BUT WILL CONTINUE TO GROW until he's almost 30 pounds and another three inches wide.

No, he's right. Corn meal is going to be in every major grocery store but I prefer hush puppy mix.

Here's a common brand:

Being that large, its speed is probably on par with Thomas Jones.... you wouldn't be in much danger.

Sure, maybe so. I used to go crabbing and I know what the little ****ers can do.

listopencil 05-03-2012 01:01 PM

There are certain animals that I'm just not going to mess with. A bear. A honey badger. A crab. There are probably more.

tooge 05-03-2012 02:09 PM

I last ate there in about 1997 on the way home from a chiefs game. Needed to soak up some beer. Big mistake. Big

ToxSocks 05-03-2012 02:12 PM

I've eaten there maybe once in the past 10 years. I decided to go because i had fond childhood memories of their Hush Puppies. They weren't nearly as good as i remembered them being.

It's interesting to note that most everyone in this thread only eats there once every few years. I'm going to guess the majority of people are like that.

I haven't eaten at LJS in years. I think the last time I ate there I was living the dorm life in college. We used to joke that we were "going to get a yellow meal" and everyone knew what we were talking about.

What did malt vinegar ever do to you? Malt vinegar isn't for use on all things. It would be terrible on a sundae, for example. But it's a critical part of fish and chips. I daresay that it's not really fish and chips without the malt vinegar.

This thread inspired me to go yesterday, and the one on the way to work is partnered with a KFC, so I not only got a sampler but a chicken pot pie!

I won't be eating again anywhere for 4 more days, until I burn all those calories off. LMAO
