At least he went down doing what he loves, throwing check down passes to the RB.

Coogs 10-07-2012 03:56 PM

Fans and players should not have been placed in this situation to begin with. He should have been pulled at the start of the 4th quarter. (Actually sooner IMO) I was glad to see Quinn finally get a chance. But not this way. Should have been to start the 4th at the worst.

Remember absolutely nothing is Cassel's fault.

jspchief 10-07-2012 03:57 PM

Yeah Eric, there wasn't 70k people cheering Cassels injury. Unless there were 30k cheering from the parking lot. Your boy has made sure the stadium doesn't see 70k this year.

As for being mad and disgusted, get in line.

Yeah, I would love to see a shot of that from the back of the play to see what happened.

What I can't understand is the poor coaching on the raven side. I'd think all week long you'd have to preach to your defense if Cassel has gotten rid of the ball you don't hit him because you don't want to knock him out of the game.

Eric Winston rips Chiefs fans for cheering Cassel injury
Posted by Darin Gantt on October 7, 2012, 5:48 PM EDT

Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel may not be very popular in the stands, but he still has support in the locker room.

Chiefs right tackle Eric Winston took fans to task for cheering when Cassel left the game with a head injury.

The veteran blocker called a group of reporters over, and said the following words, via Arrowhead Pride:

“We are athletes, OK? We are athletes. We are not gladiators. This is not the Roman Coliseum. People pay their hard-earned money when they come in here and I believe they can boo, they can cheer and they can do whatever they want, I believe that. We are lucky to play this game. People, it’s hard to economic times, and they still pay the money to do this.

“But when somebody gets hurt, there are long lasting ramifications to the game we play, long lasting ramifications to the game we play. I’ve already kinda come to the understanding that I won’t live as long because I play this game and that’s OK, that’s a choice I’ve made and a choice all of us have made.

“But when you cheer, when you cheer somebody getting knocked out, I don’t care who it is, and it just so happened to be Matt Cassel — it’s sickening. It’s 100 percent sickening. I’ve been in some rough times on some rough teams, I’ve never been more embarrassed in my life to play football than in that moment right there.

“I get emotional about it because these guys, they work their butts off. Matt Cassel hasn’t done anything to you people, hasn’t done anything to you people. Hasn’t done anything to the media writers that kill him, hasn’t done anything wrong to the people that come out here and cheer him. Hey, if he’s not the best quarterback then he’s not the best quarterback and that’s OK. But he’s a person. And he got knocked out in a game and we have 70,000 people cheering that he got knocked out?

“Boo him all you want. Boo me all you want. Throw me under the bus. Tell me I’m doing a bad job. Say I gotta protect him more. Do whatever you want. Say whatever you want. But if you are one of those people, one of those people that were out there cheering or even smiled when he got knocked out, I just want to let you know, and I want everybody to know that I think it’s sickening and disgusting. We are not gladiators and this is not the Roman Coliseum. This is a game.

“I’ll sit here and I’ll answer all your questions for the next 30 minutes if you want to ask them and I’ll take all the responsibility I can take because I deserve it but don’t blame a guy, and don’t cheer for a guy who has done everything in his power to play as good as he can for the fans.

“It’s sickening. And I was embarrassed. I want every single one of you people to put this on your station and in your newspapers because I want every fan to know that. This is a game that’s going to cost us a lot down the road. That’s OK. We picked it, we deserve it and I don’t want your pity. But we have a lot of problems as a society if people think that’s OK.

“I’ll get off my soap box and you guys can ask any football question you want.”

No, Eric, that pretty much covers it.

The Chiefs have played poorly. Frankly, they are a disaster. Cassel leads the parade.

But for too many fans, their passion for the team leads them to forget that the laundry they’re cheering for has a human being inside it.

How about a player saying this.

"I hope the fans weren't cheering Matt's injury but I understand the frustration with this team. We aren't playing very well and 1-4 is not where this team should be."

morphius 10-07-2012 04:19 PM

Were the fans cheering the injury or just cheering the fact that something finally happened to force the coaches hand to do what we all know NEEDED to happen and the team seemed unwilling to do.

Nightfyre 10-07-2012 04:19 PM

What's next? We aren't supposed to boo Cassel at a celebrity softball game? Man the **** up.

Reaper16 10-07-2012 04:21 PM

These players don't play for us. After all, it's our choice to be a fan.

I care more that a well thrown and on time ball that the receivers can catch with out getting nailed in the process. I hate to see a guy hurt, but much rather it be him than any one of the other players on this team. JC is going get ran to death so instead maybe another QB can help this team to save us from other injuries. If the coach is to stupid to pull his QB What can we do?

Yea, there was a guy who called into 810 postgame who was saying stuff like, "why did the booing just start this season for Cassel?".

He said he was ok before this year...14-10 as a starter in KC.

Cheering when someone gets hurt is classless. Unless it's Matt Cassel. He has the immunity idol, so it's only fair.

Well, at least we know now what the distraction story will be this week - the evil fans.

And just for the record - there was a cheer for Cassel when he got up off the ground, and then a roar of approval when Quinn took to the huddle. Period, end of story.

Maybe Winston could hear Blowfish unleashing hell in Cassel's direction, and that's what he is reponding to.

mikey23545 10-07-2012 04:25 PM

I love a fan base that cheers one of their own players getting injured, and then defends it by saying "great fans like us deserve better!"

KCrockaholic 10-07-2012 04:25 PM

Fans were just excited to get Cassel out of the game. They weren't cheering because of the injury. Cheering because of what the injury meant.

mcaj22 10-07-2012 04:26 PM

where was the teammates defending McCluster when Cassel hung him out to dry in front of a whole stadium? Where was it for Hillis? Where was it for Boss?

Cheering when a player is injured is poor form, no question about it.

There's just so much frustration built up around Cassel that it has to find its way out.

Unfortunate ... all the way around.

This is a pretty good point. How else would Crennel tell Pioli (F your guy) when Pioli has told him that's who he has to play?

"Ok, if I gotta play him (with a piece of sh*t QB), then this is my gameplan, what do you think of that, Pioli?"

Is that really what's going on? I wonder. How else (other than sheer stupidity) do you explain such a bizarrely conservative gameplan. I mean they were a couple of plays away from running the single-wing.

If Wintson protected Cassel better then Cassel wouldn't be hurt.

Winston should really be blaming himself, the OL, and Crennel/Pioli for continually trotting out that POS that is Matt Cassel to play QB in this league. If it weren't for them, Cassel wouldn't have gotten hurt today. Lets place the blame on the real people. The fans are there for entertainment. When certain players, coaches, and office personnel get between that, we are completely justified to take our angst out on them. After all, its because of us that they are paid millions to play a ****ing football game!

Is that really what's going on? I wonder. How else (other than sheer stupidity) do you explain such a bizarrely conservative gameplan. I mean they were a couple of plays away from running the single-wing.

What's stopping Crennel from benching Cassel? Would it lead to his dismissal?

The announcers even mentioned that Crennel and Daboll appear to have ZERO confidence in Cassel. We ran entirely way too much. But then again, you don't put the game on a person who has given the ball up 13 (or is it 14 now) times.

If Crennel is doing what Pioli is telling him, then that means its time for Pioli to be fired. If Crennel continues to trot cassel out there on his own accords, Crennel needs to be fired.

When Dan Fouts calls out the fact that the play calling was obviously affected by no confidence in Cassel, you know there is a problem.

DAN ****ING FOUTS!!!!!

That's a good question. Maybe it's as simple as he was raised in a military family and he follows orders. I dunno. 'Cause if he gets fired, he still gets paid. Nonetheless, it's obvious that he doesn't want Cassel playing.

Stop trolling us dick weed!

They only stab and piss on opposing fans. They don't do mean things like cheer injuries.

I hope they play Cassel the entire year. That way they go 1-15 and draft the best right tackle in the draft. #thechiefsway

Baldinger made an excellent point. It should be Pioli addressing the media not Winston now there is an even bigger divide between this team and it's fans because of Winstons comments.

I feel like he misinterpreted it...didn't feel really different but the way he interpreted it I wouldn't disagree with his reaction.

By the way, Eric - as a KC fan who wasn't in attendance and did not cheer Cassel getting hurt, just want to say thank you for turning this into a national news story and making us all sound like classless jerks. We needed one more kick in the head today.
