New Girl is awesome. Schmidt makes that shit hilarious. The "meth" episode had me rolling.

ragedogg69 11-08-2014 07:36 AM

The meth bottle episode was probably the best episode they had since season 2. The past couple seasons were pretty meh to me. Mindy has much improved from her disastrous pilot.

I love the Danny Castellano character mostly because he acts almost exactly like myself in just about every situation. It's spooky. I even have the Miami Vice soundtrack on vinyl.

It is hilarious.

Matt LeBlanc is funnier on there than he ever was on Friends.

I was thinking of coming up with a list of running gags that are good as Matt's ringtone. They set it up perfectly by casually integrating it into his life in low key telephone conversation situations, and then pound it home in dramatic tension cutting scenes, then bring it back later like nothing happened, the epitome of 'running joke.'

Makes me laugh EVERY TIME I hear it.

It's just about perfectly paced. They ramp up the hijinks, then when it gets to the edge of ridiculous, it's the end of the season.

Reminds me of a goode British sitcom in that way.

When I found out the premiere is free, I knew I had to watch.
Few things I've laughed at harder in a while.
Think improv meets D&D, meets Ricky Gervais' HBO animation of his radio show.
PFT was a perfect choice for first guest character.

I don't watch many. Elementary will be back on my list when the reruns are over. On HBO The Night Of is a new limited run series, I've seen the first two and it's really good. There is going to be 6 or 7 more episodes, see the thread for more details and info.

The only show I watch is Motive. It's a Canadian series that is in season 4, season 1 and season 2 were summer replacements on ABC here in the US. Last summer ABC skipped season 3 because of low ratings the previous two seasons, the show is too intelligent for most American Summer TV viewers. Anyway, USA Network showed season 3 (13 Episodes) in March, April and May. A totally new season 4 is airing now on Sunday nights, episode 2 was last night.

The show Motive is about a homicide unit in Vancouver, Canada. They aren't trying to be an American city, it's actually a Canadian city because it's a Candian TV show. The difference with this show over others is, in the first minute they show you the victim and the killer. Sort of like Columbo, where you knew who the killer was but he or she would tease Columbo the entire show because they thought he was dumb and they had outsmarted him.

On Motive, you don't see the murder until the end. So it's kind of told in flashback and present tense until they flashback to the murder and by then they captured the killer. There is a gritty female detective is the lead and this season, her partner got promoted to Sergeant (her boss) but he's still a good guy and helps out. Really great show, but unfortunately this will be the last season. USA on demand will have the first two shows and the remaining 11 will be on Sunday nights at 10pm on USA Network.

TURN, The Americans, Better Call Saul and AMC's specials like The West and now The Mob I used to watch a lot of Big Bang but I've usually been gone when it's on due to travel and missed too much to keep up. The repeats just play the same old past episodes from one season over and over.

I watch ID fairly frequently, usually late at night in bed where I get drowsy and eventually nod off. Then I turn it off.

No more than three hours a week total.

I saw it on RedBox last weekend. Got through all of Season 1 last weekend. Four episodes one night, three another night, then three on a second disc July 4th evening. I almost decided to give up on it because it was b-o-r-i-n-g! Plus it was hard to understand all those Brits not pronouncing their "ts" when it doesn't even come with closed captioning. Drove me nuts! But starting with Episode 9 it gets good.

BucEyedPea 07-08-2017 06:54 PM

I'm more a reader than I am a big TV watcher. I like to watch movies and those continuing series—Turn, The Americans, Better Call Saul, The Crown and also Big Bang but I miss a lot of BB due to travel usually on Thursdays. So haven't kept up.

I binged: Breaking Bad, Mad Men ( except for the last season), The Tudors, Reign, Marco Polo, Hell on Wheels, each season of The Last Kingdom and three earlier seasons to The Americans, which is much better watched consecutively.

Not really religiously though. I consider most of those movies that are in series form ( often binged watched in a few weeks) not something like the list in the first post. ID is not watched religiously if you note. I do watch late at night but only sporadically. I do watch movies on Netflix including in serial form, but it is not done religiously but at certain times of the year.

I thought this was a different thread than where that was posted. Nice to see you pay so much attention to me. I am flattered.

It's called cringe comedy. Either you get it or you don't. Or maybe more precisely either you find humor in the pain and conflict or you don't.

The key is usually finding a nugget of relatability.

For Larry, he's an asshole, but he's an asshole who's often right about stupid social conventions. Goodbye hugs, four way stop signs, how many free samples you get until you have to pick a flavor and buy something, holding an elevator, talking on a cell phone in crowded enclosed spaces; Larry picks at them and punctures the absurdity without flinching.

Ray Ramano is similar about the pain of a hen-pecked husband who's still a momma's boy, although truly it's just his voice that's grating, not his whole persona. Either you find humor in a head of a household paralyzed by trying to simultaneously placate a wife and a mother who are often at odds, or you don't.

Garry Schandling isn't really fair, because he's grating because he's kind of uncovering an untold truth of show business, that often the happy smiling face of late night comedy is a vain neurotic mess when the camera is off. It's part straight comedy, part expose of Hollywood fictionalizing of onscreen personas. So the nugget of relatability is 'I knew those guys were fakers, nobody's always that chipper!!'

Another I'd add to cringe comedy is David Brent/Michael Scott as the branch managers of their respective versions of The Office. I won't protract this by going over their characters again. Hopefully, most can see the structural parallels.

I know what cringe comedy is, and that has nothing to do with it. Different comedies make you cringe for different reasons. That's not the issue. The issue is that the main characters are over the top with whining and complaining. That's what makes me cringe. Totally different from the Office (which I loved by the way, both versions). In the office the cringe is for the over the top character traits BEYOND being constant sources of bitching and moaning.

Fox News and Fox Business News. Mainly for the hot women. Check out Trish Regan.

Fine, you get and enjoy good cringe comedy, but feel that Curb doesn't do it well. We'll all have to live with your assessment.

I never said it was bad. I simply said I didn't understand why others liked it. You're the one that got the attitude about teaching me what cringe comedy was. Next time I'll ask you before I decide I don't like something to make sure it's OK.

What the actual ****.

You take the time to post that you DO NOT UNDERSTAND SOMETHING.

I explain what YOU SAID YOU DIDN'T UNDERSTAND.

You retort that you understand everything and still think it's shit, even though it's a widely and long popular show

AND I'M THE ONE WITH ATTITUDE?

Which is it, do you NOT UNDERSTAND why it's such a popular show? Or do you UNDERSTAND why and still disagree?

And if you 'understand' the humor of the show, and still don't 'understand' why anyone likes it, how in the hell is that different than saying the show is bad?

Check yourself and ponder how you come off.

Wow. Are you OK? I know I don't post on here often, but I normally don't see you get this angry?

My response to your condescending cringe comedy explanation was simply that your answer was not what I did not understand about why people like the show. Cringe comedy is supposed to be about the actions and dialogue and situations that make you cringe. They don't, he does.

What I don't understand is why people like to watch characters like that. It's not about the show, it's about the character and/or actor portraying the character. As I explained in my first post. Maybe it would have been more clear if I didn't use the word cringe to describe my reaction, as it is not based around "cringe comedy".

Why would I be angry?

You say 'I never understood'
I take the time to explain EXACTLY what you say you never understood
You thank me by calling me a condescending prick.
