I can honestly say the only time I've watched sportscenter the last 3 or 4 years is for the 30-30 stuff. Otherwise it's cliché schtick, and TMZ; too much for me.
|
SportsCenter has turned to crap. So much of it is "Top-10" this and other non-highlight stuff. It used to be 95% highlights.
|
This is what happens when their TV contract demands keep increasing, while their actual sports offerings keep decreasing. Nobody wants to watch your stupid ****ing X Games and women's softball when you're forcing cable and satellite companies to raise rates because you're charging so much. **** ESPN.
|
They need to get back to basics.

Yeah Prison Bitch is normally an idiot on most things but he is right about bitching about ESPN content in late June and July when there are no sports on to show.
|
I miss the WSOP.
|
ESPN is the best sports network and its not even close. Everybody always hates whos on top. They clearly know what they are doing, it would be foolish of them to cater to small markets like KC. The loss of viewers may only account for so many more competitors like NFL, NBA, MLB, B10 networks. There are only a finite number of sporting events to go around. Im sure ESPN would make an ESPN22 if they could.

I don't mind the softball, soccer, X Games, etc.
I think ESPN needs to do MORE of that type of programming. I wish they'd quit trying to "entertain" me (ironic, I know, since entertainment is literally their first name), and just roll sports. Shit, get more shows breaking down sports to the absolute nerd level like Jaworski's old NFL show. |
Quote:
ESPN only contributes $4.69/month to my bill according to that article. How is that "ridiculous"? Unless you mean ridiculously low. I'd love to purchase cable a la carte. If I could, there's no doubt I'd pony up the $5/mo for ESPN. No doubt at all. Obviously if it went to that model, many subscribers who don't care about ESPN would drop out and that would raise the per-month fee on those of us who want it. But so? If they wanted to charge me $15/mo, it would still be a steal. |
Lol at Hootie getting banned again.
|
MLB network is 10 times better than ESPN...and any of it's BS TMZ style "coverage".....and guess what, MLB network actually shows highlights and in-game highlights of teams other than Boston and New York!
ESPN, about 5-8 years ago, started taking themselves way too seriously.....and liked to think of themselves as "real" journalists.......all the while creating stories out of the most non-story topics fathomable. What I WILL tune in for on ESPN: College sports (any of them) They do a real nice job with soccer NFL (but not pre or post-game coverage, or their "highlight" shows.......as the only real highlights come from the pats, cowboys, Giants, Eagles.....and occasionally Buffalo, because the asswipe Berman likes them for some reason) |

I also miss the scrabble championships they had complete with commentary.

I usually mute it until something comes up worth watching like Schefter or Mort report. |
ESPN is awful. Just turrible. Their live events are good. Everything else is shit. The hell of it is that it didn't used to be that way. When I was in college, it was on every day while I was doing homework, cooking, whatever. It was on. Now I can't stand it. There are a few highlights of a NY/Boston team, then some jackass like Squirmin Herman Mother****ing Sack of **** Edwards on hollering about something or other.
I'm sure there is some decent programming on. When I worked at Cabela's I'd watch Mike and Mike in the morning. It's not great, but it is good enough. There aren't any gimmicks, no fake arguments, just sports discussion. And they're pulling that off with Mike ****ing Golic and Greenburg who is possibly the least experienced/knowledgeable guy in the industry. It isn't hard, but they ****ing go batshit crazy on everything. I used to catch PTI and Around the Horn when I could but I haven't seen it in years. I'm sure it's degraded into a disaster after the Kornheiser MNF disaster. People are bitching about women's softball, I'll watch the shit out of that. Track and Field? I'm all over that like pee on Hootie. Show me sports mother****ers. And Tebow's birthday party? **** you. Die in a ****ing fire you assbags. Seriously. GTFO. |

Along with just constant repetition. Find something else to talk about. Jeez. You are suppose to cover the world. Leave the East Coast once in awhile. Not everyone lives in Boston believe it or not. Freaking idiots. Some things I do like: 30 for 30, Bob Ley and Outside The Lines. Mike and Mike (At times) also Colin Cowherd, he might be annoying but if you listen close he speaks the truth more often than not. Scott Van Pelt is pretty cool also. |

It is without merit. |

I really like Van Pelt and Russillo on the radio. They don't always just talk about sports or even the most popular sports, they actually sound like a couple of dudes close to my age just hanging out shooting the shit with interviews and some directed sportstalk mixed in.
I like Golic but Greenberg makes me sick. He's such a knee jerk over reactionary douche it's driven me to change the channel on the morning commute. Plus I really don't need to know all of the up to date news on the Jets. I only watch the TV station if a KU or soccer game is on or if there is a 30 for 30 on that I'm interested in. |
Four letter network is unwatchable. Too many commercials. Rather listen to Hud than watch the four letter abortion.
|
They hired guys like Herm and Scooter...enough said.
The fact they have ESPN NewYork, LA, and Chicagos is dumb as ****. |

You can't compare share-of-cost channel rates to a la carte rates. It's a completely different deal. |
With NFL Network, MLB Network, NHL Network and Golf Channel all on my DTV package, there's no reason for me to watch ESPN anymore.
The last time ESPN was on a TV in my house was in April for Masters coverage. |

As it is, your enjoyment of ESPN is being subsidized by all the people out there who don't give a shit about it. That's why the $5/month price is considered to be outrageously high. |
ESPN is going the way of MTV. They don't show sports anymore, just stupid shows.
Bring back world's strongest man and old home run derbys. Show me some sports I wouldn't normally see like some lacrosse or rugby. I can only take so many NBA dunks. |
If I want NFL, I go to the NFL Network.
If I want the NHL, ....well, I sure as hell don't go to ESPN. If I want a full frontal lobotomy and shitty coverage about Lakers, Heat, Jets, Patriots, and Cowboys bullshit drilled into whatever space is left between my ears, then I go to ESPN. |
ESPN sucks. 'Nuff said.

Hope they don't have Chris Berman do the home run contest again. His back back back back back back back is over played.

The local radio stations are just as bad. It's July and all they can talk about is football. Gator football. ugh. |
ESPN's Rundown:
5 mins of highlights and scores 25 mins of analysis of "what was going through LaBron James head when he scored the winning FG to seal the championship" 5 more mins of the same highlights and scores 10 mins of how unbelieveable Peyton Manning/Tom Brady/Robert Griffin III is. 4 mins for top plays 10 mins of "What Kobe Bryant meant when he said Dwight Howard sucks - let's bring in our NBA expert to discuss" 1 min to discuss all other ongoings in sports. And the obvious bias towards certain teams in nauseating. |

The only times I turn on Espn usually, is for ATH, and PTI, and that's provided that Jemele Hill isn't on ATH, that bitch can die in a fire.
But, during basketball season. Unbearable, I cant take anymore of the Lakers, or Heat, im sick of hearing about the Jets, and Tebow, you know this year is going to be all about the PATS, and Tebow. And now during baseball, its all about PUIG. That's all they talk about, PUIG PUIG PUIG, he was even a major topic during the home run derby. Sick of it. And I used to watch NFL LIVE. Wanna talk about insufferable? Trey Wingo is the biggest douche I have ever seen. That no talent prick is always taking shots at athletes. I cant stand that. |

Olbermann Returning to ESPN2 with Daily Late-Night Show Aug. 26
Hour-long Olbermann at 11 p.m. ET live from New York studios Keith Olbermann, who worked for ESPN from 1992-1997, will return to the company with a late-night program Monday-Friday on ESPN2, starting Monday, Aug. 26, it was announced by ESPN President John Skipper. Titled Olbermann, the show will generally be presented at 11 p.m. ET from ABC’s Times Square studios in New York City. The program will focus on the day’s relevant sports topics through a mix of perspective and commentary, interviews, contributors, panel discussions and highlights. “Keith is a one-of-a-kind personality and these shows will be appointment viewing for that very reason,” Skipper said. “Keith brings a blend of editorial sophistication and unpredictability — you can never be sure what you’ll get. Olbermann on ESPN2 gives viewers the quality late-night complement to ESPN’s SportsCenter in the same way we’ve developed distinct show options across our networks the rest of the day.” Olbermann noted: “Apart from the opportunity to try to create a nightly hour of sports television that no fan can afford to miss, I’m overwhelmed by the chance to begin anew with ESPN. I’ve been gone for 16 years and not one day in that time has passed without someone connecting me to the network. Our histories are indelibly intertwined and frankly I have long wished that I had the chance to make sure the totality of that story would be a completely positive one. I’m grateful to friends and bosses – old and new – who have permitted that opportunity to come to pass. I’m not going to waste it.” More details about the show, including additional contributors, will be announced in the coming weeks. Similar to SportsCenter on ESPN, Olbermann will often immediately follow live events on ESPN2 (starting with US Open tennis Aug. 26), leading to some flexibility in the show’s start times depending on the length/timing of the events. About Keith Olbermann Keith Olbermann’s sportscasting resume dates back more than 40 years, and begins with Chris Berman selecting him as his assistant at their high school radio station in Tarrytown, N.Y. In 1979, Olbermann would move directly from Cornell to network radio and, at the age of 22, to CNN Sports. He spent the rest of the ’80s reshaping local television sportscasting at major stations in Boston and Los Angeles, and then joined ESPN for the first time in 1992. Apart from his signature work as co-host of the 11 p.m. “Big Show” SportsCenter, Olbermann helped to launch ESPN Radio and ESPN2, and won the ACE Award as the nation’s top cable sportscaster in 1995. He left ESPN in 1997 and would host the World Series for NBC that year and Fox in 2000, before rejoining ESPN in 2005 as a daily radio contributor. From 2007 through 2009 he was the co-host of NBC’s Football Night In America, and earlier this year he was named as studio host of post-season baseball coverage on TBS. |

It seems clear that the competition has eroded away their once clear dominance. NBC and CBS now have their own networks soon to be joined by Fox. There is a channel for each major sport and several minor ones. There are increasingly more college conferences with their own networks. There are networks for just about every MLB team.
|
ESPN is still a good channel for when you are busy doing something else and want something on in the background. Its probably the number #1 channel among people who aren't actually watching television.
|
Did I ever tell you about the time my brother wrote Keith Olbmerman a critical letter in the mid 1990s and he sent a letter back to him in the mail, calling him a white trash loser who is obviously angry at his menial job? It was awesome. He obviously saw the return address in Missouri and thought the writer was bitter and broke. East Coast elitist with thin skin.

Thank God for NFLN...

FOX Sports Live shits all over SportsCenter. I'm surprised at how well Jay and Dan's act has translated on this side of the border, they fit right in with the overall vibe of the show. And Salaam, McNabb, Roddick, and Payton are actually worth listening to unlike anyone on ESPN.
ESPN's going to have some real problems going forward IMO as FOX continues to add to their lineup. They're getting the US Open starting in 2015 and planning on making a run at the NBA rights when they go up for sale again soon. FOX just needs to stay vigilant about not falling into the bad habits of overt bias towards certain teams/markets, obsessions with certain players, and inane debates over "clutchness" and "legacies" that have ruined ESPN. |
