Ya I'm excited to come out there, more then likely going to move, this is basically like a scouting trip.

Finding a house should be decided by your commute most likely. Before we moved to Phoenix everyone suggested Chandler/Gilbert but we both had jobs in the West Valley. Unless you like spending hours in the car and hundreds of extra dollars in gas, looking for something that fits your budget that isn't a far commute can be done in every part of the valley. I would never suggest to anyone who hasn't been to Phoenix to completely cross off an entire city in Phoenix from the list. Just explore the good areas for what you want/can afford that is relatively close to work. My wife and I each commute 30 minutes each way because we wanted to live in Litchfield Park.

Budget has a lot to do with it too. Our friends bought a house in south Scottsdale in 2012 while we just bought 4 months ago here in 2014. They paid 20k more, for 500 less sq/ft, for a house that is 50 years older and doesn't have a pool. They've had major problems with the house but wanted to be in Scottsdale but couldn't afford anything more than something in South Scottsdale. They valued central location, while we valued house/space, schools and less crime.

Message to the OP. Explore every area you can. Phoenix is unique in that you can find great/bad things in all parts of the valley and in every city. Everyone wants to bash on the West Valley because in large part, the bad pockets of Phoenix are on the west side. But until you see how gigantic the valley area is, there really is no need to worry once you know the location of these areas. They make up a much smaller portion of the city than people realize.

That was my point. I lived in GoodYear and Avondale back in the early 60s - they were damn fine cities back then. But, like anything else, the times change. Funny thing - My Sister had a good friend that lived in Scottsdale (back then) that was Dean Martin's hair dresser. That was back in the day when the folks from Hollyweird kept houses there....

Do yourself a favor and eat at Pinnacle Peak Patio. Mammoth steaks, cooked over an open fire (outside). Old west vibe. Iconic Phoenix restaurant. Overlooking the city lights. On a summer night it is fantastic. If you are bringing the kid, there is a shoot out ala Tombstone, can dress up as old west and have a 'vintage' photo taken and some shit to look at.

If you wear a tie, they will cut if off and hang it from the ceiling. There are thousands of ties hanging in there, everywhere.

They just sold out to a real estate developer as it sits on PRIME real estate so it will be closing, but not before July.

Do not let this opportunity pass you by. It's in N. Scottsdale.

Chiefs Pantalones 05-15-2014 09:27 PM

Where should we live if we decide Overland Park? We'll likely rent first then look for a house but anything we should look out for or go for?

No. Just no. I cannot, in good conscious, recommend Maricopa. Way south. Not part of Phoenix. Cheap though and semi small town.

But by all means, check it out. It might be right for you. ****ed commute for all parties though.

So pretty much live wherever you want as long as the commute isn't a pain? If we choose Phoenix what are good places in north Phoenix you guys would recommend? And so Scottsdale is a safe place just not the south side?

Well, my wife will be staying at home. I have an interview at PayPal at 101 and 202 connect. One at a place in Mesa, I've had a phone interview. So mainly in that southwest part of Phoenix.

Scottsdale is cool from Old Town on up. The principalities around Scottsdale are all great. Mid north is "OK". Going west it gets a bit rougher, and cheaper, but closer to Cards games (whatever).

Come on out man. As big as this city is, I meet KC transplants all the time. Just did last weekend at a house party. We were neighbors FFS. Just look at how many of us are here. I always felt it was big city Overland Park.

And when you do move and you have that pool; Aeration my friend. Night time aeration. You are welcome.

I'm telling you, Ahwatukee is the shit. At least check it out. Mesa is just a highway shot and not part of the standard rush hour traffic patterns. Honestly, I've never bitched about traffic here when I was commuting. I work from home now. As someone said, get that kind of gig. Phoenix is pretty techno. A lot of organizations support WAH.

Off I-10 (south) exit right on Chandler Blvd and follow that until you hit a 3 way stop. Take a left which will keep you on Chandler. If you go straight you will be on Ray Rd.

Anyway, follow Chandler till the end and take it all in. Greatest just before dusk as the sun is setting behind S. Mountain.

What's so bad about it? Wikipedia says Maricopa has higher household income of like 66k compared to 70k in Scottsdale.

Well, the $70K in Scottsdale is representative of the $30K millionaires referenced earlier. But as someone else said, there's a lot of money here too. Tons. But the multi-million dollar homes are usually bought through trusts and such, which isn't reported in those averages.

$66K for Maricopa may be true, but it doesn't show. And unless you are working there, it's an hour + commute to anywhere.

The rush hour traffic from Maricopa into Phoenix is just stupid. But, ironically, not bad going home.

Lol I feel like I'm being recruited. I'd work in north Phoenix. If you had to choose between Anthem or north Scottsdale which would you choose? Or some place else you'd recommend for safety first folks lol.

North Scottsdale without hesitation. Though Anthem will be cheaper and you will have a drive through the desert every day. Break bad dude.

Ok having trouble deciding on a hotel, looking at holiday inn phoenix-mesa, Courtyard by Marriot Phoenix west/avondale, and scottsdale links resort.

It's not a big difference. Anthem is a longer commute. Math will resolve that crisis. Gas is expensive all over.

EDIT: I misread your comment. When I moved out here in 2001, I really didn't notice a cost of living increase. If you are from KC, you really should lean towards Phoenix. New and exciting and opens new world (Vegas, LA, PS, Mexico), new attitude and a new way of life.

Chiefs visit AZ this year too.

A fraternity brother of mine had a Chiefs bar at the Sheraton in Mesa with a breakfast buffet. Always a good time. Don't know if he still has it though. There's a Huskers bar 1/2 mile from me (whatever)

PS: We have In-N-Out. There's the KC deal breaker.

Right on. 108 is the highest forecasted next week (Thursday).

Too early to tell yet, but we are in full blown monsoon season. Had flair ups over the last couple of days. Humidity at 48% tonight so we are locked and loaded again.

Make sure you check out the Ahwatukee area. Closer to Casa Grande, if you are still considering that. Chander, Gilbert, Mesa are just mundane.

Cool. Yeah we're actually having a mild summer, heat wise.

Chiefs Pantalones 07-23-2014 09:01 AM

I was on the fence about it but my family and I have decided to move back to KC. Better schools, living environment. The schools are awful in Phoenix. We enjoy the heat but not everything else. Plus, during my five years here, IMO the state of Arizona might as well be renamed to North Mexico. No difference.

From my research I've done there are a few really good schools down there. Although a lot of bad ones from the research I've done.

There's no denying the school system sucks but there are a few gems, you just have to look around.

Marty Mac Ver 2.0 07-23-2014 11:12 PM

If you live in Gilbert, that drive to CG every day will eat you up. While it's all interstate, it's still an hour. Even if you take some back roads you might make it in 45-50 minutes. Casa Grande schools are not that great. Gilbert really, or South Chandler, are the two best parts. Ahwatukee is nice as well.
