I think the fact he was never a HR hitter is probably the main reason (and they already talked about why he isn't a HR hitter... because he doesn't try to pull fastballs).

Watching him play 1B today, I was actually thinking about my long-held belief they should have moved Mauer to 3B a long time ago. With his arm, athleticism and quickness, I think he could have been a very, very good defensive 3B.

Those two plays to his left are good examples of 3B-type plays.
