Taco Johns is still probably one of the better spots in KC. The taco-burger is the thing there. Really a special treat.

I love Hayward's sauce for around the house but the grocery stores near me don't seem to carry it anymore. I had to get my last bottle at Kansas Sampler.

I live about 4 blocks from Q39. They've really made a name for themselves in short time. Excellent beer selection too. It's pricey though.

Most plates are around 15 bucks and they give you a lot of food. The full rack was the most expensive thing i saw and it was 30 bucks. I can usually eat a full rack when hungry and I barely finished half of it and half the sides (which were all amazing...BBs, pot salad, veggies). Amazing cheesecake, too. I completely recommend everyone to try it. My ONLY complaint was that I called just after 1 to make my reservation and they told me the soonest was gonna be 830...when we got there they didn't have my reservation at all...but promptly seated us at 8pm...even though the place had a huge live out the door. Just a great experience. |

My affinity for chat bar is strictly ambiance based. The food is just average when compared to some of my local faves, but they have done a great job with the cocktail list and overall vibe. I'm still picking q39 over everything.
|
The place is really popular right now. You're gonna be fortunate to get in on a Saturday night if you haven't made your reservation at LEAST the day before.
|
Another BBQ joint worth your time to check out is Smokin Guns in NKC on Swift. However, I am unable to give a thorough review on their whole menu because their burnt ends own my soul every time I go there.

That happened to me for years at the Martin City Smokestack. Good grief, that place was incredible. |
Jonesing to try this Q39 now...

I've been to jack stack. It's good but I'm not crazy about their sauce. I would like to try Arthur Bryant but don't wa to get mugged or carjacked. Heard good things about Joes.

I went Q39 last night. Didn't have reservations but still got seated in about 30 minutes. I got pulled pork, brisket and sausage along with baked bean and fries. The pulled pork was incredible and definitely my favorite of the meats. The baked beans were very good as well, great flavor and the beans were still a little firm, not mush like some places have.
We also got the fondue appetizer which is 2 pretzel sticks and 4 apple slices to dip in some chesse. Meh. Overall very good. |

Brisket looks good. Burnet Ends look like cubed brisket and not true burnt ends. Beans look meh. |

2) I swear to all that is holy, we had the best BBQ baked beans on all of God's earth when I worked at Bobby Bells as a kid. Slow cooked with brown sugar, molasses, and rub, then the cooks would chop-up the ends of the brisket, sausage, and ham, mix it in, and let it get nice and thick in serving pot. |

That's definitely not cubed brisket. At least not like they serve at Jack Stack's.

I could almost throw a rock and hit Hi Dive from home. They just opened a new place there on the corner called Mo Brew. Haven't been there yet though. Did you check it out? |
That tequila bar by Hi Dive is pretty cool. Lot of service industry skanks in there every time I stop by.

http://www.clrsearch.com/Kansas-City...127/Crime-Rate The risk of assault there is more than double in that zip code than in the United States as a whole. So it's not likely that a visitor would get assaulted, but it's also not like one shouldn't be aware of the fact that 18th and Brooklyn is in a dangerous part of town. I wouldn't discourage friends from visiting Bryant's, but I would make sure they knew to be alert and pay attention. I went to junior high and senior high school at Lincoln (just up the hill, around 22nd and Brooklyn). I would feel OK but not great about walking around there at night to go take the Troost Bus home from night football games or practices. I would walk down Woodland to 19th or 18th and then walk over to Troost), but that was because I lived just east of the Paseo at 49th Terrace (a couple of blocks from Gates headquarters). Nowadays, the crime rate in 64100 is a little worse than in 64127, and I think that might have been the case back in the early 1980's, too, but I'm not sure. (I used to feel just slightly safer walking past Lincoln (21st and Woodland) at night than walking past Paseo High (near 48th and Woodland), but I felt way safer walking past Southwest High, for example. Now that I live in a neighborhood with a low violent crime rate (zip code 95618), I'm even more on guard visiting the old neighborhoods. By the way, even though I spent so much time near both Bryant's and Gates, I've had way more meals at Gates, at least 50 to 1. I just liked Gates better. But their quality control is not impeccable. I had two meals there a couple of weeks ago, one by my mom's house (the Swope Pkwy location, which has mutton) and the other out on 40 Highway, coming home from a Missouri Mavericks game. Gates is always good, but it's not consistently great. The fat in the mutton seems to vary from a lot to a whole lot. ;) If Q39 is able to expand its business while maintaining its quality standards, that would be a great accomplishment. |
