Gibson settling in, but he won't be out there much longer. Already at 88 pitches.

It's always been invalid. Hopefully this will get it changed. Players and a panel should vote on players, not fans.

That will not happen. Period.

The best they can do is bring back paper ballots in stadiums. Making the voting online-only directly led to this possibility.

Fan voting for the baseball AS game is way too much of a tradition--and marketing opportunity--for them to eliminate it. They could have fans vote for the reserves instead of the starters. I bet they end up not messing with it too much.

I didn't say it would happen but it surely should. Home field advantage depends on it. Shouldn't be left to uneducated fans, which let's be honest, most are.

I'm not passing judgment on whether or not they should remove the vote from fans. I am just confidently and firmly predicting that they will not ever do that again.

The paper ballots had to just be a drop in the bucket as far as overall votes once there was an online option. I bet the return rate on those was pretty low, and most people are only going to fill out one. Online, you can do 35 votes in 5 minutes and repeat all night if you wanted to do so.

There are literally millions of casual voters who are willing to fill out a ballot handed to them by an usher, who have no desire to vote 35 times online.

Its not a coincidence that the very same year that they made it online-only, that suddenly the Royals and Cardinals are both getting a huge number of starters.

The votes from each of the other 28 stadiums would have balanced things a bit more.

lewdog 06-10-2015 07:45 PM

Fine then do half fans and half panel on who makes it. I don't care but it shouldn't just be the fans. But when a turd like Omar and over half the Royals make it, the system is clearly flawed and ridiculous.

You could make a case for everyone but Infante and Rios

alnorth 06-10-2015 07:47 PM

I think in 15 years each or most seats will have some kind of ipad-like device built into it, where fans at the game can conveniently vote for all-stars, as well as play around with other in-stadium features. We're in the awkward in-between period of technology where internet-only votes empower hyper-motivated fan bases.

That.... might be a plausible option. I don't think it'll happen, but if I went forward 5 years in a time machine, I wouldn't be completely shocked if I looked around and saw that MLB had put in something like that.

1. Who cares about the all star game?

2. Make paper ballots at games worth 10 online votes.

alnorth 06-10-2015 07:54 PM

I'm still getting used to the idea that Draftkings is seen as legitimate enough to the point where professional sports leagues allow them to advertise.

Give it another decade, and we'll be able to gamble online.

He's been taking the victory lap of the poor, often-criticized guy who suddenly makes it big and can yell out "suck it!"

Well I hope so. As a fan of baseball, it's pretty stupid that 7 members of the Royals could be starting, even if that is my team it's absurd.

BWillie 06-10-2015 07:57 PM

When is Omar going to be held accountable? He's sucked for two years, and we have a suitable replacement in Colon

Still maintain that Duffy should be in Guthrie's spot. Guthrie has one of tbe worst ERAs in the AL. As with any pitcher, theres ups and downs. But his downs are really terrible and id rather go with Duffy due to his upside alone.

The paper ballot vote would be more than enough to exert a moderating influence. Infante wouldn't be close, and Morales would not be leading at DH, at the very least.
