Bluestem The Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange The American Restaurant Justus Drugstore (well, its in Smithville, but still) El Camino Real (unless you can get superb al pastor tacos with handmade to order tortillas where you live, then I would put Novel or Julian or Rye in the 5th spot.) |

I really enjoyed Tannin Wine Bar, always love Bluestem and the Rieger Hotel, and though I have heard it can be a bit hit or miss, the three meals I have had at The Farmhouse were stellar.
Everyone I know loves Afarre, but I wasn't that excited by it. I will try again in case it was a fluke. It is the favorite restaurant of someone I know who generally has impeccable taste. |
I'm actually craving BRGR now. I want to try their BLT, build your own mac and cheese and short rib tacos. I'm guessing their fish and chips out of this world, too.
Great milkshakes, too. |

Everything is pathetic compared to BRGR's onion rings. They're a meal on their own.
I will ****ing go to war over this. |
Whew, look at all this good eating in my home town. I have been wondering if Port Fonda was good. What do you recommend? Is there a specialty? I'm in town in a week for a few days.

And don't go on Friday or Saturday night unless you have a reservation. And you probably need to make such a reservation 3 days in advance. |

Torta ahogada is one of my favorite sandwiches in the world and Port Fonda's is the best I've had, even over Bayless's Xoco.

Huh. Like....so where is a hipster place in KC then by that definition. I agree with this definition but think its funny because nobody uses it like that anymore. Its like....totally lost meaning. |

El Fogon has great meats, as well.
El Salvadoreno is also awesome. |

I had a great BBQ late lunch/early dinner this weekend at a local joint in here in Northern VA called Dixie Bones. http://dixiebones.com/
Their St Louis Ribs melt in your mouth and fall off the bone better than most baby backs I've had. Had 1/2 rack (6) bones; 1/2 lb of BBQ brisket, which is very good but not as good as most in KC or Texas; muddy spuds ; coles slaw ; cornbread-which sucked. Washed it down with a Legend Porter. |
^^^ looks ok to me but what are muddy spuds? looks like grits or smashed spuds and butter on the plate.
|
Any of y'all been to some of the BBQ joints in Memphis? As a KC native, I don't like them as much as the best spots in KC, but there are some pretty incredible BBQ restaurants here.
BBQ Shop (pork sandwich on Texas toast; BBQ spaghetti) Central BBQ (ribs, BBQ nachos) Elwood's Shack (brisket, tacos) On and on. |
To me hipster place is some dumpy dive where a bunch of kids that think they are smart sit around and talk art and lit while holding down jobs at some shit hole. All the while spending cash their parents give them on nautical tats.

If I head to Los Feliz/Silverlake clubs, I know what to expect. |
I normally can't muster a **** for what type of people hangout where, but I did go to a place a few weeks ago that has a reputation for being a heavy metal type establishment. I get there and they are piping in some epic thrash at levels that made conversation impossible. **** yeah, right? No, it was full of Chad and Chastity's, like on dates and shit. One of the chicks I was with was like Oh Hell Yeah and headbanged her way up to the bar and we got the stink eye like what are these hessers doing here. I don't know if that's hipster or poser or what, but I was a tad heartbroken. Hoping it was just an off night because the staff was cool.

When I am consistently having to defend (OK) Joe's to people who claim Q39 is the best in KC, it has to be pretty good.
|
I had one of those "no lunch" kinda days yesterday, so on the way home I stopped at Rosedale BBQ for a turkey dinner with fries, beans and slaw. And Stewart's Orange Soda.
Bliss. If you don't mind a styrofoam plate, Rosedale is a great bargain. All three sides were perfectly done. And their sauce is fantastic on poultry. I went home full and happy. That's a good thing. |

Ironically, I think most of those clubs you mention are filled with people who want to be hipsters, or at least want to copy their tastes. The key to a hipster, IMO, is seeking out undiscovered art, music, and fashion and embracing it with a sense of superiority over the uninitiated. But, the necessary next step is when that piece of art, music, or fashion become mainstream, the hipster must move on to something newer and more obscure so the superiority can be maintained. I've known some true hipsters and their life seems exhausting. |
I'm currently destroying this. I'll post thoughts later.

Oh. That was from The Stack.
We had a conversation about it on facebook. It's above average. I gave it a 6.7/10. It's main appeal is that it's 2 minutes away. However, not as good as Gates, Jack Stack, OK Joes or Q39 by far. Pulled pork was a little dry, although fine with the sauce. Burnt ends were merely OK. Ribs were pretty good. Sausage was good. Beans were very good, as was the slaw. The sauce was actually very, very good. Fries were great. I'll probably be back, but only because it's close and you can get a shit ton of BBQ for $27. I ate myself sick that night. Ask Flopnuts. |
I'm no expert, but there's Q in this town that needs sauce, and some Q that doesn't need sauce, I'd say.
This needs the sauce. It wasn't bad by any means, though. |

But, I had a friend that put a brisket on Green Egg today from Snake River Farms that was absolutely amazing! It was unbelievably tender and had a great smokey flavor. But, he offered up three sauces: A Chipotle/Mustard BBQ sauce, a sweet KC sauce (and I can't remember the name because there's so many new joints there but it was sweet) and a Memphis sauce. Okay, I hate to complain, because the potato salad, slaw and brisket were perfect and I mean perfect, but without a touch of Rufus or Zarda or Gates or even Jack Stack sauce, it never tastes right to me. |
I prefer Joe's or LC's sauce. Gates has good sauces. I think Arthur Bryant's only has one that I'll use.
